Today was a practice round for the Drennan-Lake John winter league and with only two rounds remaining these practices help to experiment with different methods as the winter slowly leaves us and what a day it was, mild sunshine and low pressure. A bit of a short fall of anglers today but the fishing was a big improvement on previous weeks, Drennan’s very own Chris Vandervliet took the coin on the tried and tested maggots, caster and ground bait well done German, see all the usual suspects next week for round 5

Today we hosted the round 3rd of 6 in the Drennan / Lake John winter league, recent storms and a recent ice played it’s part on todays results, Geoff Lockwood secured the win on the pellet approach whilst the percentages approach from Gary Miller on maggots and GB was good enough for second, and our good friend Phil Speakman stood in for Rean Hunt and caught his PB perch of 2lb 13ozs, the sun was out and the banter as always was good fun and I personally had a disaster but I did witness my good friend Bill Everitt (4th best pellet angler in the country 😂) who was next to me today, he hooked a 2lb bream of which he didn’t see the bite and landed it to save his blushes, round 4 next week and all to play for

Last weekend we had a lid on both lakes which meant the lakes were closed until Tuesday so it was nice to see a few anglers on the bank and it was Greg Deller time to shine from peg 9 fishing bread half depth tight to the far bank, congratulations Greg 🎣👍

We have had lots of enquiries for fishing this weekend and in the interest of health safety we have decided to stay CLOSED….. the ice is 2” thick and won’t thaw any time soon have a good weekend folks maybe prep your gear for the another day on the bank, the gates will be closed all weekend so don’t waste your time travelling to have a look or a walk round.

Apologies for the late report, so yesterday we hosted the second round of the Drennan- Lake John winter league and to say it fished hard was an understatement, it was team Wickford’s Paul Hyde that made this his second win from peg 3 with a nominal 7lb 6oz, but even though the fishing was hard there was plenty of banter and laughter to keep everyone amused, there was on DNW, and a rouge feeder in a tree which almost crashed the internet with its coverage, this morning both lakes have a lid on them and the air temperature outside is biting cold, round two of six completed

After a week of ice on the lake the colour had completely dropped out of the water so it was predicted the fishing would be hard but the were a couple of surprise big weights, Paul Dunn not known for telling the truth when asked his weight denied having a good day as he put nearly 90lb on the scales, Pinocchio strikes again

Numero uno Drennan ace Chris Vandervliet aka German George was the luckiest man on the bank today sitting next to his old mucker (me) and as he was landing his foul hook bream and skimmers he would have a little gloat and a chuckle, “liberty”, the five digit hand gesture is a signal to camera the he won our side bet of 5 quid as well….. lucky old German, round two next week of the Drennan winter league hope it warms up a bit…..

The last match of 2023 and it was a very busy day for that team Wickford man Mr Hyde, yet another awful day of wind and rain which made presentation difficult for majority, another close match despite the conditions, well done to all those that stuck it out HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone !

Today we hosted our annual Christmas pairs match on the bottom lake organised by Peter Jordan, it’s a random pairs draw and with a dry day forecast we were all looking forward to a break from the rain that have had over the last few days ….WELL what the hell happened to the forecast it was at times biblical with a cold wind it was not good, but there was no shortage of banter and still a few fish caught, congratulations to Ricky Martinelli and Kevin Hodges on the win and thanks to my partner Simon Mullord for carry me today, thanks to Bobby Swayne and Mary for the after match nibbles once again all the lads appreciate it, happy new year lads see you next year
