Something I notice with almost every dad who comes to me.
They apologise on the first call.
“Sorry I’ve let it get this bad.”
“Sorry I don’t know what I’m doing.”
“Sorry I’m starting from scratch at thirty eight.”
One guy even said “you probably think I’m an idiot for not sorting this out sooner.”
I told him the truth. You’re not late. You’re not behind. You reached out, which puts you ahead of ninety percent of dads your age who are thinking about it but doing nothing.
The bravest thing a grown man can do is admit he needs help and then actually ask for it.
There’s a weird pressure on men, especially dads, to have everything figured out.
To already know how to train.
To already know about nutrition.
To never need anyone to show them.
That pressure keeps so many men stuck.
They’d rather stay out of shape than admit they don’t know what they’re doing.
But nobody taught you this stuff. School didn’t. Your parents probably didn’t.
The gym certainly doesn’t hand you a manual when you sign up.
Not knowing is not failure.
Not knowing and pretending you do is what keeps you spinning your wheels for years.
If you’re reading this (and are actually this far down) and you’ve been putting off asking for help, here’s what I want you to know.
Starting from zero is not embarrassing.
It’s the smartest place to start because you don’t have bad habits to unlearn.
Every strong guy in the gym started not knowing what they were doing.
The difference is someone showed them.
You’re not too old, too out of shape, or too far gone.
You’re just untrained. And untrained is fixable.
