Older riders...
I have good news,,,, and bad news,,, ;
Good News.. To be fit you don't have to do lots of miles..
Bad News.... You will have to work harder at the strength training side of cycling, ie intervals or trying harder on hills when you come to them...
Get the turbo trainer out granny :-)

Been a while... sorry about that folks...

Anyway, the tt season has finished, a bit faster than last year in some races and slower in others.. we are calling it a draw...

Went and did a mountain bike race at the weekend... first one for probably 15 years..
Forgotten how challenging it is; I ride off road regularly but riding single track at race pace, finding lines through rooty sections, avoiding loose water bottles, dealing with mechanicals without panic... chucking the bike down 18" drop offs and trying to keep traction on gravel climbs...
I did get a podium place [ but there were only 3 of us in the category... ] my lap times were ok, better than some of the Sport category riders and would have got top 5 in the busy Novice group.. which is rather pleasing as I ride a 1980s hard tail with about 1 1/2" of travel on the forks :-)

So what did I learn....
Off road racing needs
Good bike skills... ok, I do practice this as often as I can.. its fun..

It needs good in race recovery... into the red a lot .. more interval training and weights..

Requires good core and upper body strength and flexibility.. needs work here..

Bravery... hmmm a bit of self preservation for me these days... haha..

Easy off road skills session tonight , Walsall Arboretum, cricket pavilion, carpark Sutton Rd/Crescent .6pm til 8.... £2.50 ... a play session for grown ups...

Been a while since I posted on here..
Busy busy at the moment, helping people learn to ride in Walsall and doing up bikes... All good fun.
We have the telly people down the Arboretum to do an article today..
I have begun the season about where I was last year at this time, a bit slow :-)
Dropped a stone in weight since the beginning of the year, still struggling and need to lose another half a stone or so to get to a race weight that is acceptable. I am too greedy..
Been racing on vintage bikes this season, a lot of fun and haven't been last too many times..
