The one constant factor we all have to deal with is gravity. You can perceive this pulling down as an enemy, as a fight to stay upright, but this is incorrect. Every creature on and plant on earth...

I often wonder how serious Wing Chun practitioners take the importance of posture.

My Wing Chun mentor Dan Parr handed me a weight one day and asked me to hold it with arms outstretched. Then to hold it close to my body. Obviously holding it closer made carrying the weight easier.

I was surprised that the weight of the head is approx 5kg to 6kg (11 or 12lbs)! The head is balanced on 7 vertebrae and around 20 different muscles, all trying to keep the head upright and stable.

If your posture is poor like in the red diagram, your muscular system will be working overtime. How then can we hope to deliver effortless power and have a freely moving body?

Look at yourself, closely. Examine how you hold yourself and see what you can do to free yourself from self-imposed constraints.

When a student reminds you that when they started a year ago, they came to class with a back support and took Cocodomol to relieve the pain. Now, after his own daily practice he needs neither of those things at all.

Another student commented only this week that after only a few months he can feel the tightness dispersing from his shoulders. His words were "it's like how my shoulders were 20 years ago".

The real benefits of training effect real everyday life, not preparing for a confrontation that may never come...

Students have improved the last couple of weeks with a focus on freeing the shoulder. Some have started to notice the arms connection into the back. When they stop pulling from the front and shortening the arm, instead lengthening and opening, they achieve a freedom and efficiency that surprises them.

Its wonderful to see the joy people get from having a little more openness and freedom in the body.
