NATIONAL DROWNING PREVENTION WEEK...
We've had a great week here at the Abbey Sport Centre helping to educate our swimmers about keeping safe around water. How to react and how to help others.

We've practiced our the water safety code, making them aware of the beach flags, shouting for help, throw rescues and most importantly floating.

We will continue to ask you to wear pyjamas in lessons throughout the year, we will continue to express the importance of being safe around water and we will continue floating throughout lessons.

Below are a few pictures of our swimmers this week, what great models they were.

Water Safety assemblies for schools ๐ŸŠ

Did you know that drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death among children? Education and awareness can save lives.

We are now offering engaging and educational Water Safety Assemblies for schools, designed to teach students essential water safety skills, drowning prevention, and how to stay safe around pools, beaches, rivers, and other waterways.

Our assemblies help children:

โœ… Understand water hazards
โœ… Learn safe swimming practices
โœ… Recognise emergency situations
โœ… Know what to do if someone is in trouble
โœ… Build confidence and awareness around water

By reaching children early, we can help prevent drowning incidents and create safer communities.

๐Ÿซ Are you a school, teacher, or administrator interested in bringing a Water Safety Assembly to your students?

๐Ÿ“ฉ Contact us today to learn more and book a session.

Together, we can educate, empower, and help save lives through water safety awareness.

Why do we ask children to wear pyjamas in swimming lessons? ๐Ÿ‘•

Learning to swim isn't just about strokes and confidence in the water - it's also about safety.

By wearing pyjamas during a swimming lesson, children experience what it feels like to be in the water while fully clothed. Wet clothing becomes heavy, can restrict movement, and makes swimming more challenging. This helps children understand the importance of water safety and prepares them for the unlikely event of accidentally falling into water while clothed.

These sessions also give children the opportunity to practise:

โœ… Staying calm in an unexpected situation
โœ… Floating and treading water while clothed
โœ… Safe entry and exit techniques
โœ… Building confidence and resilience in the water

Itโ€™s always a fun and valuable lesson that helps develop real-life water safety skills alongside swimming ability.

Did you know?

๐ŸŒŠ Drowning can happen in seconds and is often silent.
๐Ÿ‘ถ Children under 5 are among the highest-risk groups for drowning incidents.
๐ŸŠ Learning water safety skills and swimming can significantly reduce drowning risk.
๐Ÿ‘€ Active supervision is the most important way to keep children safe around water.
๐Ÿ›Ÿ Life jackets save lives and should always be worn during boating and water activities.

This Drowning Prevention Week, let's work together to keep our families and communities safe. Whether you're at the beach, pool, river, or even around home water hazards, remember:

โœ… Supervise children closely
โœ… Learn CPR and emergency response skills
โœ… Respect water conditions and warning signs
โœ… Wear a properly fitted life jacket
โœ… Never swim alone

A few simple precautions can prevent tragedy and save lives.

Beach flags facts from around the world ๐Ÿšฉ

Did you know that beach flags are one of the most important safety systems used worldwide? While designs can vary by country, many beaches follow similar colour codes to help keep visitors safe.

๐Ÿ”ด Red Flag = High danger. Strong currents, rough surf, or unsafe swimming conditions.

๐ŸŸข Green Flag = Low hazard. Conditions are generally safe, but always stay aware.

๐ŸŸฃ Purple Flag = Dangerous marine life may be present, such as jellyfish or stingrays.

๐Ÿ”ด๐ŸŸก Red & Yellow Flags = Lifeguard-patrolled swimming area. In countries like Australia and the UK, you're encouraged to swim between these flags.

โšซโšช Black & White Flags = Watercraft and surfing zone. Swimmers should avoid these areas.

๐ŸŒŽ Fun Fact: Beach flag systems differ slightly around the world, so if you're visiting a new destination, take a moment to check the local flag meanings before entering the water.

Before you dive in, look up, check the flags and stay safe!

Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Week ๐ŸŒŠ

During the week of the 15th June, we're highlighting the importance of water safety and helping children build confidence and skills that can save lives during swimming lessons.

A reminder for all swimmers: Please bring pyjamas or lightweight clothes to your lesson this week. Swimming in clothes helps children experience how different it feels in the water and teaches valuable self-rescue and water safety skills.

Key water safety tips:

โœ… Always supervise children around water.
โœ… Learn to float and tread water.
โœ… Swim with a buddy whenever possible.
โœ… Follow pool and waterway safety rules.
โœ… Wear a properly fitted life jacket when appropriate.

Together, we can help make every aquatic experience safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
