WALLASEY SEABIRDS SECOND AT ABERSOCH AS TREARDDUR TRIUMPH IN INTERSTATION THRILLER!
Wallasey sailors were narrowly pipped into second place in this year’s Seabird Half Rater class Interstation Race held at Abersoch in North Wales on Friday 18 July 2026.

Wallasey Yacht Club (WYC), Trearddur Bay Sailing Club (TBSC), Anglesey, and South Caernarfon Yacht Club (SCYC), Abersoch were competing for the WLYC Diamond Jubilee Canon trophy for Seabirds at Abersoch in North Wales.

Seabird Half Rater class yachts are historic 20ft carvel planked wooden yachts still sailed and maintained by the three clubs and are believed to be the oldest one design boats still sailing in Britain. The class dates back to 1898 is managed by the Seabird Association.

The Interstation Race is a team race decided by the three Seabird clubs over two heats. Each club (or station) sails two boats and has to achieve the best places overall in each heat to win.

This year, the race was hosted by Seabird Association President Andy Wilkins of South Caernarfon as part of the Abersoch Seabird Open Week.

As ever, there was lots of fiercely competitive racing between the clubs on the Abersoch course but initially, it looked like Trearddur would win the trophy comfortably when their boats took first place in both heats.

But Wallasey’s second boat was higher placed in both heats ahead of Trearddur and South Caernarfon and when the final points were added up, Wallasey and Trearddur were both level pe***ng. Who would win?

Agonisingly for Wallasey, Trearddur’s first place wins meant they were declared the winner and so deservedly took the trophy for this year, leaving Wallasey in second place with South Caernarfon in third place.

Well done to Trearddur for a fine win and congratulations to all teams on a thrilling race.

Congratulations also go to helms who won individual prizes during the race:

- Chris Neill (TBSC) won the Garge Bowl for best helm on Penguin;
- Ian Ralli (WYC) won the John Sutton Overtaking Tiller for 2nd placed helm on Seasnipe;
- And Liz Soutter(TBSC) won the Robin Mitchell Ladies Trophy for best female helm on Goldeneye.

Many thanks to the Seabird sailors, boat owners and team at South Caernarfon Yacht Club for their excellent hospitality and management of the race as well as another successful Abersoch Seabird Open Week.

Chris Walker, Wallasey member and Vice President of the Seabird Association said: “It was a cracking interstation race at Abersoch. Thank you to South Caernarfon and Trearddur for such a great day!”

The Interstation Race rotates around the three Seabird clubs and the next year’s 2027 edition will be hosted by Wallasey on the Mersey.

Special thanks to Ian Ralli (WYC) and Nigel Morgan (SCYC) for the photos and Ian Ralli (WYC) for the race information.
