TechnicalTuesday

One of the fundamental positional techniques from last night.

The Switch / Short Switch

Enables you to escape a side ride within a short amount of space, low strength requirement. Highly efficient and maintains contact throughout.

When drilling make sure the top partner (uke) is in side ride position rather than a cross body or he gets nutted as seen here.

Less of an issue in competition. Fairly unfortunate in class. But you do you....its a bold strategy, lets see if it pays off.

This is a very very old technique going back to 18th century Lancashire Catch Wrestling and heavily adopted into uk freestyle and then Olympic wrestling.

🥋☀️ NO GI SUMMER HAS BEGUN! ☀️🥋

For the months of June, July and August, our students will be taking part in No Gi Summer at Universal Judo Academies.

During this period, classes will be conducted without the traditional judo uniform, helping students experience a broader and more complete judo education. At Universal Judo Academies, we believe that judo should not be limited to the ideal conditions of sport judo alone.

A true judoka should be able to adapt their skills to a variety of environments and situations. To truly "Know your Judo Well", you must be exposed to a myriad of conditions and learn to adapt appropriately. No Gi training develops adaptability, awareness, grip-fighting alternatives, body control and practical application beyond the traditional jacket.

Our holistic approach ensures that students gain a deeper understanding of judo as a martial art, self-defence system and grappling discipline, not simply as a sport.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the mats this summer! 💪

KNOW YOUR JUDO WELL SERIES....

Im gonna start throwing up videos now and again of techniques that we don't see in Olympic Judo and therefore, the average Judo player will most likely not have practiced.

The problem is, that once conditioned into a framework over a generation or two, many ideas and techniques can be forgotten and then become alien to a style.

If your instructor says there are no leglocks, hip locks, spine locks, shin or forearm locks, facelocks, wrist locks, striking, weapons or nerve holds and strikes in Judo then there is a few possibilities....

A) They are aware but trying to cover up a lack of knowledge

B) They're trying to sell you something

C) (Most Commonly) Don't know Judo

This isn't hidden information. There's plenty of books and resources out there.

Long before BJJ became a global phenomenon, there was Kosen Judo. While the Kodokan focused on standing techniques, the Kosen schools specialized in the “Ne-waza” (ground fighting) that would later influence the entire world of MMA and Jiu-Jitsu. These practitioners were masters of the triangle choke, the armbar, and the relentless pressure that happens once the fight hits the floor.

Kosen Judo is the bridge between the traditional and the modern. It reminds us that Judo is a complete system of combat, designed to handle an opponent at every level. To study Kosen is to respect the origins of ground fighting and to realize that the “gentle way” is just as lethal on the mats as it is in the air. It is the hidden DNA of the modern grappler.
