Monday night’s adult class worked through some progressions for Ouchi-gari. We started with simple footwork, then added movement, direction and timing before putting the pieces together.

Mats, cones and repetition - not particularly glamorous, but that’s how you build good Judo.

We don’t expect adults to magically develop good movement because we’ve shown them a throw three times and shouted “again!” We break the problem down, build the movement, then put it back together again.

Come and learn properly, whether you’re starting from scratch or getting back on the mat.

Monday 6-7pm
Wednesday 7.30-8.30pm

Plus BJJ Stand-up (“old-school” Judo) Saturdays 11.45-12.45pm

7 day free trial

BJJ MYTH BUSTERS No. 10

“You don’t need stand-up for BJJ.”

Of course not.

Because every fight in history has started with two people politely kneeling opposite each other saying, shall we begin?

Stand-up? Nah
Grip fighting? Optional
Takedowns? Overrated
Self-defence? Let’s not get carried away

At Combat Base Wakefield we think differently.

If you can’t close the distance, control the grips, or stay on your feet, you won’t get to decide where the fight actually happens.

Yes, BJJ spends a lot of time on the ground, but unless your opponent has agreed to start on their knees, knowing how to get there safely is a useful skill.

Funny enough, the “J” in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu comes from Judo, or so they say
.

Turns out standing up wasn’t an afterthought after all, because fights don’t start on their knees, only some BJJ classes do.

Myth Busted.

A few bits from the past week!

We started the week with fundamentals, and a Bank Holiday open mat, with plenty of Gi and No-Gi rounds. (Not everyone stayed for the picture)

Our son Matthew started school on Wednesday and we are settling into our new routine and updated and improved timetable!

We had five members step-up to compete for the first time at Empire Grappling yesterday. A great week on and off the mats.

Empire Barnsley – Sept ’26 đŸ„‡đŸ„‡đŸ„ˆđŸ„ˆ
All five competitors stepped up to compete for the very first time today!

Hunter kicked things off, dominating both matches and securing a submission in each.
Ivar was up next in the grey belt division. He was caught in his first match, and lost his second on points, but kept fighting right to the end and showed real grit throughout.
Freya competed in the novice category, having only recently passed a year of training. She was caught quickly twice but she came away with a better understanding of the level out there, and plenty of motivation to keep improving.
Jake did well to secure a submission in his first match, before winning his next on points.
Last but not least was Kyle, who has only been training two months, and went the distance in both matches.
A brilliant effort from all five. Stepping onto the competition mats for the first time takes courage, and we’re proud of every one of them. Plenty learned and plenty to build on!

Yesterday, we shared how discipline and self-control are an important part of our junior classes, while still making sure children enjoy their training.

Then a parent text us and summed up that balance perfectly!

Structured, disciplined and still plenty of fun. Exactly what we aim for on the mats.

If that sounds like what you’re looking for in a children’s class, send us a message to arrange a free trial week.

Sometimes “they just need to calm down” isn’t actually helpful.

If your child struggles with boundaries, frustration, listening or controlling all that energy, constantly telling them to “calm down” probably isn’t teaching them how to do it. They need somewhere to practise those skills.

Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) give them structure, clear boundaries and consequences, all while letting them be active, curious and, occasionally, completely wild!

Over time, they learn to listen.
To stop.
To try again.
To handle frustration.
And to control themselves when things don’t go their way.

That’s not just useful on the mat, it’s useful at home, at school and everywhere else life decides to test them.

Give them somewhere productive to put that energy and book their FREE TRIAL at Combat Base Wakefield.

A big day for us as our little boy starts Reception!

Good luck to all the children starting or returning to school today, or later this week. Whether it’s their very first day, a new school or simply the start of another year, we hope they have a brilliant time settling in, seeing friends and making new ones.

And an extra little thought for anyone feeling nervous this morning — children and parents alike!
