🏏 Old Sharlston CC — Final Pontefract League Round-Up

Saturday 12th September 2026

And with that, our time in the Pontefract & District Cricket League comes to an end.

After years of great battles, close finishes, promotions, relegations, brilliant individual performances and plenty of memorable Saturdays, our final league fixtures in the competition came fittingly against Knottingley Town.

The 1st XI went down in a competitive game at Banks Garth, while the 2nd XI signed off with an excellent 16-point victory at Old Sharlston.

1st XI — Knottingley Town 184-9 beat Old Sharlston 173 by 11 runs

Winning the toss, Sharlston elected to field and produced a solid bowling performance to restrict Knottingley to 184-9 from their 46 overs.

Hadyn Chadwick led the attack with 3-29 from six overs, while Ryan Kelsall took 2-33. Jon Railton, Danny Bullock, Dale McMullan and Brendan Norton all picked up a wicket apiece as Sharlston kept themselves firmly in the contest.

The chase was built around captain Danny Bullock, who struck 59 from 56 balls, including eight fours and two sixes. His opening partnership with Brayden Pickard took the score to 83 before Bullock fell.

From there, Knottingley fought their way back into the game. Dale McMullan made 25 and Harry Clegg produced a late 28, taking Sharlston within touching distance, but the final wicket fell at 173 in the 46th over.

A defeat by just 11 runs, with Sharlston taking four league points from their final Pontefract Premier Division fixture.

2nd XI — Old Sharlston 166-7 beat Knottingley Town 111 by 55 runs

Back at Old Sharlston, the 2nd XI provided the perfect ending to our Pontefract League story.

After being asked to bat, Sharlston recovered from losing Kallum Pickard immediately and gradually constructed a competitive total.

Captain Robert Simpson was the standout performer, making an excellent 63 from 83 balls with 11 fours. Contributions from Dave Taylor (22), Eli Lofthouse (19), Oscar Cocliff Clarke (17) and Corey Dooler (18) helped the side reach 166-7 from 40 overs.

Then came an outstanding team bowling display.

Eli Lofthouse returned 3-9 from six overs, including two maidens, while Raghavendran Nair took 2-28 and Robert Simpson completed a superb all-round afternoon with 2-3 from two overs. Ben Wilkinson and Kallum Pickard also claimed wickets, with Oscar Cocliff Clarke contributing a run-out.

Knottingley were dismissed for 111, giving Sharlston victory by 55 runs and the maximum 16 league points.

A cracking way for the 2s to close the chapter. 👏

💙💛 Farewell to the Pontefract League

So, after many years, that is Old Sharlston CC’s final Saturday in the Pontefract & District Cricket League.

There have been some fantastic battles along the way. We’ve competed hard, celebrated wins, taken our defeats, enjoyed promotions and endured the difficult Saturdays that are part and parcel of club cricket.

But perhaps more importantly, we’ve built positive relationships with clubs, players, officials, umpires, scorers and volunteers across the league. We’ve shared a lot of cricket with a lot of good people.

To everyone at the Pontefract & District Cricket League, and to every club we’ve played against over the years: thank you.

From everyone at Old Sharlston CC, we wish all the clubs, players, officials and volunteers in the league every success for the future.

For us, one chapter closes and another begins.

Congratulations to a fantastic career. We are honoured to be the opposition for his “last game”. We have locked horns on many occasions and Sundays game looks set to be a great setting to hang those boots up 👏👏👏👏

On Sunday, one of our greatest ever players will be making his final appearance for the club.
If you have played alongside or against Steve over the years, we are welcoming everyone down to give him his final ‘send off’. He will receive a guard of honour as he leaves the field for the final time.

🏏 OLD SHARLSTON CC — SATURDAY ROUND-UP

Saturday 5th September 2026

A difficult Saturday for Old Sharlston, with defeats for both senior sides and three league points collected across the two games.

There were individual performances to take from both matches, but overall it was a day where neither side produced enough with the bat. With one league game remaining, there is one final opportunity next Saturday to finish the campaign on a better note.

🔵 1ST XI — POLLINGTON WIN BY 8 WICKETS

Old Sharlston 103 all out (42.3 overs)
Pollington 105-2 (15.2 overs)
Old Sharlston: 1 league point

After months of largely dry conditions, this was the first genuinely wet wicket for a good few months, making batting in the first innings particularly tricky.

Sharlston had to contend with those conditions first and struggled to establish any real momentum. Regular wickets left the innings in trouble at 43-5, with scoring difficult throughout the opening stages.

Dale McMullan provided the main resistance with 30 from 56 balls, while Ryan Kelsall made 17 and Jon Railton 11. Some resistance further down the order helped Sharlston edge beyond three figures, but the innings eventually ended at 103 all out from 42.3 overs.

The conditions certainly played their part, but 103 still left very little margin for error with the ball.

There was some early encouragement.

Danny Bullock struck and Jon Railton added another as Pollington slipped to 18-2, briefly giving Sharlston hope of making a game of it.

But as conditions became easier for batting, Pollington took control.

Ebrahim Lunat hit an unbeaten 61 from 44 balls, including four sixes, and alongside Mohsin Contractor’s unbeaten 27, quickly took the game away from Sharlston.

The visitors reached 105-2 in 15.2 overs to complete an eight-wicket victory.

A difficult toss and difficult conditions in which to bat first, but ultimately Sharlston were unable to put enough runs on the board to give themselves a realistic chance of defending the total.

🟡 2ND XI — BENTLEY COLLIERY WIN BY 80 RUNS

Bentley Colliery 157-8 (40 overs)
Old Sharlston 77-7 (40 overs)
Old Sharlston: 2 league points

The 2nd XI bowlers produced a competitive first half of their game, restricting Bentley Colliery to 157-8 from their 40 overs.

Captain Robert Simpson was excellent, returning figures of 3-19 from his 10 overs, while Ben Wilkinson took 3-43.

Corey Dooler added another two wickets with 2-57, while Ben Llewellyn delivered a particularly economical spell, conceding only 27 runs from his 10 overs and bowling four maidens.

At halfway, Sharlston had given themselves something to chase.

Unfortunately, the reply never really developed.

Simpson again led from the front, top-scoring with 35 from 83 balls, while Dooler contributed 22 from 65.

But Sharlston struggled to increase the scoring rate throughout the innings and were unable to build the partnerships required to seriously threaten the target.

They eventually finished on 77-7 from their 40 overs, leaving Bentley with an 80-run victory.

A good bowling effort gave the 2nd XI a chance, but 77 from the full 40 overs was never going to be enough to turn that work into a result.
