What a weekend!

On Saturday there was a whole club outing to Marlow Spring Regatta, with a number of wins for the Masters and Juniors, and some first-time racing for many which was wonderful to see. Too many wins to mention but ranged from Mas F down to WJ13, such is the breadth and depth of Bewl rowing!

Then on Sunday we took part in the Junior section competing at Wallingford Regatta where we had the boys J18 4x in action. The boys put in a fantastic performance to win their heat earning some complimentary comments on their technique from the commentator which was a joy to hear and speaks to the quality of our junior coaching at Bewl.

And then on Monday we were at the Scullery Regatta and our juniors first took part in a 1.9km time trial to qualify for the various finals. Bewl had some fantastic performances and managed a clean sweep of ‘A’ finals for the crews we took!

A fantastic but very tiring 3 days of racing and congratulations to all involved, and a special thank you to our junior coaches, Andy, Brooke, Jamie and Dave, for their significant commitment to making this happen. Thanks also to Andy and Dave for trailing and to all those who work behind the scenes, especially Nadine, to make this happen, including our club photographer John Coward who has kindly shared some of these photos!

A mixed weekend down this weekend. Super chilly, always beautiful but also a bit of mist to contend with. Great outings on Saturday preparing for .club head and some erg action in the clubhouse when the mist refused to lift on Sunday.

Some international racing for Bewl crews recently in Turin trying out some brand new which was a total treat! The day started with a really thick fog but lifted beautifully but the current was strong. 700 singles took part and 2e had entries in the WMC Mika, WME Stephanie, MME Alex for his local club and MME Hagen. Mia was also racing for the juniors. It’s always wonderful to race in another country and see how they do things. Of course, the pizza, the pasta and the coffee was amazing but so too was the camaraderie, the organisation, the atmosphere! We’ve been three years in a row and can’t wait until next year!

The whole club was delighted today to welcome Olympic Gold Medallist Emily Craig back to Bewl where she talked with the juniors and shared her experiences of rowing at Bewl all those years ago when she too was a junior. Crawford Burden held a Q&A with her where she talked about her path to being an international athlete. Determination and organisation and having a great coach were key things that she mentioned. She was presented a life membership to the rowing club and a bottle of Chapel Down. And as if that wasn’t enough the ceremony ended with the naming of a new boat, Chris Willis (club president). All in all a wonderful morning with plenty of cake and of course a cup of tea!

BBRC PLUM PUDDING RACES

BBRC’s finale of the year ‘Plum Pud’ races took part on Sunday 17th December. We had 74 members take part in the rowing races with another 12 helping with launches, pontoon, coordinating and catering.

The crews were randomly selected mixing Juniors, Masters, Novices and Competent rowers together, and everyone had a great time, entering into the spirit of Christmas. Unfortunately, the weather got up, and the races on the water were stopped short, but completed on the ergos, with much bravado.

A big thank you to Dave, Mike and Wendy for the background work and coordinating. Sarah, Dave, and Rob M for launch safety cover. Mike, John B and Wendy for pontoon help. Christa, Helen M, Hazel and Clare for the catering tent, plus all the parents for the lovely cake donations.

Thank you to everyone who entered into the spirt of the Club event. Have a lovely Christmas and wishing you all a Happy New Year.

SUNDAY 19TH NOVEMBER

With the weather putting rowing on hold again, the Junior coaching team are always looking for inventive ways to keep the Juniors engaged with winter training and making the sessions fun.

On Sunday the 19th November, we arranged 4 x 20minute sessions. The Juniors were divided into 4 groups of approximately 8.

Sessions:
1. Hill Sprints - Wendy
2. Ergo’s introducing the new sliders - Jamie
3. Basic life support, with the 'Annie’s' - Helen
4. Capsize and Coldwater shock presentation – Dave

There was lots of running around between the Bistro, boat shed and the hill behind the shed. It was a great morning with lots of important information covered in the sessions, as well as some hard workouts.
