Part 1…the life changing event
🎉Celebrating my 20th year 🎉 as an ITEC qualified Reflexologist 👣 let me tell you a story of resilience….
🏥I started my training within Roehampton Hospital in London in 2001/2 by December I’d had the scariest event of my life…a shattered a disc in my back L5/S1…the biggest disc we have
🔥It rendered me numb from the waist down…..I’m talking I couldn’t even feel my belly button, couldn’t lean on a radiator in case I burnt my self, could injure myself as I couldn’t feel so wouldn’t know if I was standing on anything
😩I was living in a shared house in London & had to try to crawl upstairs on hands & knees, yelling in pain & it took for ever, eventually I had to give in, Mum & Dad came & rescued me, took me home
🥲Sadly I was poorly misdiagnosed in hospital, I won’t blame or shame, no need my journey is mine to figure out but I hope it never happens to anyone else….it changed my life forever at 27
I eventually had surgery & was told I’d be “black n blue” feel like “I’d been hit by a baseball bat”
“Would need a back brace” “would need morphine” “did I want children, not sure if you’ll be able to have them” that was from the doctors mouth
🙏I was so grateful my practitioner background taught me to see past the fear of his words & get cracking on healing
❤️🩹Cue me leaving hospital within 3 days with nothing but a paracetamol & a fierce belief in healing from my vocational background
👣Within 6 weeks I’d moved back to London to continue my beloved therapy career & finish my REFLEXOLOGY course!
I was in agony, learning to rewalk pretty much & do a whole host of movements/ things that I’d taken for granted whilst studying for the highest therapy qualification
🦶Funny that I was going through this dreadful time whilst learning about how to access every system of the body through feet….whilst learning to walk properly again, I had a huge limp & not feeling my feet was kind of a big deal
😓It took every effort to get to class each week, some weeks I just couldn’t find the energy or resilience to get there but continued my studies, I was determined….
A years course, dozens of case studies performed & written
Exam day came to south west London
I laid out my portfolio for the assessor. Set up my reflexology couch & away we all went on with our exam
We had to wait for the written exam results but got the practical there & then
🎉I done well, really well
There were a few looks of surprise on the room, let’s face I was a bit flaky & weird in my showing up……people had absolutely no idea what I’d been through but my amazing tutor who I’m friends with to this day was so so supportive & always has been.
I owe her huge thanks. Along with my parents & my cousin who encouraged me & came with me on exam day to help me load the car
🥇It turns out I got a distinction much to my amazement oh & I forgot to say I was also studying Indian Head Massage at St Mary’s Sports College 🏉in Twickenham at the same time- I was one point off distinction there but I couldn’t have cared less….no google maps in those days
I was just grateful to find my way to class in my huge old Sierra sapphire with no power steering 😂
You’ll want to tune in to the next instalment….how Reflexolgy stopped a serious illness in me that antibiotics couldn’t
