Match report
19th February
Lochend 2 - 3 Pumpherston Utd
On the back of a couple of wins we made the travels along to peffermill to face lochend in the league. Having already played lochend and lost at home we knew the undoubtably tight and cagey affair we would be in for as we looked to return the favour and come back to Pumpherston with the 3 points.
7” despite starting relatively well and getting a feel for the ball it was lochend that drew first blood and opened the scoring. A lochend midfielder picked the ball up deep into our half relatively unchallenged and his early strike caught Scott off guard and found the top corner, 1-0.
18” and we couldn’t have asked for a better response from the boys despite going behind in the opening stages. Although our back line had once again been drastically changed Gareth and Derek made it 10x easier with their constant talking and organising at the back making us very reassuring and as the game went on we began peppering their area with a lot of half chances and chances. Although we were dominating play Scott had to make a smart save with his feet when lochend broke with a long ball counter attack to keep it 1-0.
28” Another couple of half chances seen both Ruairidh and Shea come close with each players seeing the woodwork deny their efforts but it was once again Ruairidh who wasn’t going to see another chance go wasted. A deep free kick delivered by Derek was contested in the air by Kieran at the edge of the opposition box and as the ball jammed between both players and bounced Kieran was quickest to react, flicking the ball over the defenders head he passed it to Ruairidh who had found himself a bit of space a yard or two inside the congested area, as the ball fell to him he met it with technique, volleying back across goal and into the bottom left corner with a guided and controlled shot where most would have snatched at it. Despite the keepers best efforts our number 9 had levelled the game, 1-1.
32” Following a goal kick Ruairidh had won the initial header and the ball had fell to tam, despite everyone feeling tam had been fouled in dispossession the referee waved play on and perhaps in a mix of frustration and his want to help the team out tam began tracking back and made an honest attempt for the ball 10/15 yards into our own half that ended up a poor tackle yet still a genuine attempt for the ball, the opposition player however didn’t agree and reacted by beginning to lift his hands and sparking some unsavoury scenes that resulted in one of our players and one of lochends players being booked aswell as a sending off for the lochend midfielder.
The boys done well to keep their heads in the remainder of the first half and although the game got a bit scrappy for five minutes following the dismissal the lads got a feel for the ball again and continued to play some nice stuff despite the park already starting to chew up as expected.
HT 1-1.
51” The boys were now playing into an ever present wind that boosted the threat of a long ball over the top at any minute but it hadn’t hampered them as they started the second half popping the ball off with some crisp passes but it was a solo run from Shea that saw the pendulum swing in pumphys favour. In typical Shea fashion despite being told as part of the team only mere minutes before hand to keep the ball moving and not to dribble to much as the pitch was heavy and players were slipping on the surface, Shea started his run just inside our own half flicking the ball over the opposition player who was attempting to meet for the 50/50, next man was sat down with a couple clever body feints and the last man was left looking over his left and right shoulder as Shea produced two mesmerising step overs and although every man he passed took a boot at his legs Shea had tore right through the middle of the park and was now twenty yards from goal with only the keeper to beat, opting for sheer power Shea cannoned a shot low to the keepers left and although he got a lot on it the pace of the ball proved it wasn’t enough, 1-2.
76” Credit to lochend they kept playing and midway through the second half were arguably the side looking the more likely team to score again if any as they were throwing balls and bodies forward continuously and although their legs were beginning to feel the heavy park our centre halves (that now featured Dan over graeme who had to come off injured earlier in the game) were standing strong and defending well along side the rest of the boys but following a goal mouth scramble that was the result of a deep free kick, lochend managed to just pull level as the ball agonisingly crossed the line, 2-2.
82” the boys had came too far, worked too hard and played too well to leave any points on the park and the lads weren’t about to let it happen. They pulled their socks up from losing the goal and back in possession Kieran fizzed a ball into Ruairidh who on the first touch with his back to goal cruyffed the lochend centre half before entering the box whilst dragging the ball from right to left and although the defending centre half clipped his heel he opted to stay on his feet until he once again passed the next covering defender with a fake shot who ultimately did bring our captain to ground. The resulting protests from their players gave the opposition keeper and a defender or two time to talk to Ruairidh and try put him off the spot kick but as a man that thrives off the pressure our number nine sent the keeper the wrong way with an emphatic penalty to the left hand side that once again deservedly put us ahead, 3-2.
The boys continued to play well for the remainder of the half with everyone playing a massive part for us on the day including the lads who all came off the bench throughout the second half with great impact including dom who on the 88th minute was robbed of a screamer as the ref decided to not play advantage when wayne was fouled at the edge of the area and blew the whistle just as dom had connected sweetly with a loose ball on his left foot, regardless of the ball arrowing in off the keepers bottom left hand post to the celebrations of our sidelines, the ref assured us it was a free kick and not the final nail in the coffin. The boys were smart in the final minutes keeping the ball well in pockets and taking no risks seeing the game out and when the ref blew his final whistle it was a hard fought win but a sweet one all the same.

⭐️- with only one coach being there this week and every single man in the 16 playing out their skin with effort levels through the roof motm was a near impossible selection. The midfield three were terrific once again and Derek looked like he’d been playing centre half for years as he pocketed players with ease but the award this week goes to Gareth who’s been solid since coming in and commanded the back line with his constant talking, his comfort on the ball and his leading by example.
Huge shoutout once again to our continued supporter and sponsor of the club Michael Brooks at Pumpherston Golf Professional shop.
