Sometimes all you need is a week away from the demands of everyday life.

There's a particular kind of calm that only comes from being in wild water.

Twenty-five years ago, I broke my back.

A perfectly ordinary wave threw our boat into the air off the coast of Perth, and in a single moment the course of my life changed. I spent six weeks lying flat, learning patience the hard way.

When I finally got to walk again and made my way back to the UK, a doctor told me to try yoga as part of my rehabilitation. I opened the Yellow Pages, found a class, and watched my body and my life quietly get better.

Yoga has carried me ever since. Through worry and stress, pregnancies and break-ups, high days and low ones. And these days, in midlife, I lean on it most for the parts no one can see: the breath, the stillness, the steadiness.

It isn't complicated, and you don't need to touch your toes. Slow movement and steady breath are simply how we tell the nervous system it's safe to soften.

I don't think we keep returning to the sea because we love swimming.

I think we keep returning because of how it makes us feel.

Somewhere between taking our shoes off and that first minute into the water, something changes.

Our breathing slows.

Our shoulders drop.

The endless mental to-do list gets a little quieter.

For a while, there is no rushing, no being pulled in a hundred directions.

Just water. Sky. Breath. Ease.

Maybe that's why so many of us crave the coast when life feels busy or overwhelming.

Not because the sea solves our problems.

But because it reminds us who we are underneath them.

This week's journal is about what I call The Blue Prescription – the restorative power of water and why the sea has such a remarkable way of bringing us back to ourselves.

I will be forever grateful for it's power to heal.

It's been the hottest May on record and all I could think about, stuck landlocked in the Midlands, was this time next year we'll be in Sweden.

Cool water. Pine forest. A morning swim as the sun comes up over the archipelago.

Sometimes the path feels clear, almost Spring like.

You feel grounded.
Calm.
Light.
Like yourself.

And then there are seasons where the path feels completely overgrown, the way is messy.

You’re juggling work, family, emotional labour, endless mental lists and trying to keep everything moving whilst quietly feeling disconnected from yourself underneath it all.

I think so many women in midlife feel like this.

Not broken.
Not failing.
Just carrying a lot.

Lately I’ve been thinking about the small things that bring us back to ourselves again.

A walk.
Fresh air.
Movement.
A proper meal.
Five quiet minutes before everyone wakes up.
A conversation with someone who makes you feel safe.
Tiny moments that remind you that you matter too.

Not perfection.
Not some impossible wellness routine.
Just small, realistic ways of supporting yourself through the season you are in.

I wrote a longer piece about this today, about overwhelm, self-care, comparison and finding your way back when life feels noisy.

If you’re in a season where you feel a little lost in the woods, this one is for you.
