The August moon will be full at 5am tomorrow morning and if it's clear and you're a night owl you might see a partial lunar eclipse which starts at around 2.20am.

The August full moon has many names- the most commonly used is the 'Sturgeon Moon' which originates from the Dakota Sioux people.

It is also known as the 'Dispute Moon' which is its Celtic name and refers to the tradition of gathering in August to sort out community problems and disputes. The Celts also refer to the 'Lynx Moon'. The traditional medieval European name is the 'Corn moon' or the 'Grain Moon' and the Chinese refer to the 'Hungry Ghost Moon'.

Some of the other native American names are particularly good - my favourites are the 'Mountain Shadows Moon' of the Tlingit people and the 'Blackberry Moon' of the Anishinaabe.

The Wiccan 'Lightening Moon' feels particularly appropriate today and my choice the colonial American 'Dogs Days' Moon' has been pretty much right for our August here.
