Ulverston 36-12 Halton
Ulverston under 14's hosted a strong Halton side at Dragley Beck this weekend.
With multiple Wolverines missing training this week due to May half-term Ulverston had a number of players playing in new positions and started slowly as a consequence.
With some size and speed in the Halton side, the away team capitalised on a quick play of the ball to dart down the left side of the Ulvie defense and a quick scoot caught our left wing off guard. Making the score 0-6 within the first 5 mins.
Confidence was high and the Halton side forced a turnover within 30 yards of the Ulvie try line. Two battering runs to the left followed by a crash ball allowed their prop in for a 2nd try to the right of the sticks - 0-12.
Ulvie side now down but not defeated were asked to find another gear and they certainly put their feet down on the gas pedal.
Freddie Munro and Corbin Biddle both off the bench made their presence felt.
Freddie darting through their left wing after some pinpoint passing through the backs for the first try making it 4-12.
Then Corbin the crusher taking a switch pass off Ho**er Eddie Benson to power over the try line for himself making the score 10-12 at half time following a conversion by Tedi McDonald.
With a renewed optimism within the team and with some players back on the pitch following knocks and bruises in the first half, the Ulverston side kept momentum and scored within 3 plays of the kick off.
From the short kick Jibola Tunmbi chased the ball and caught it off the bounce to win territory in their half.
Freddie finishing off the series with a try to make it 16-12 almost immediately.
From the following kick, a charge to the 40 by Man of the Match Alfie Johns, followed by a 50 yard crash turned footrace by Luke Jewell allowed Tedi to find space in the Halton defense and shoot inside the left winger and back under the sticks for another 6 points now 22-12.
Halton dug deep and held strong for a period until Caleb Smithson finished a full attacking set off with a try of his own, Tedi missing the kick for 26-12.
Freddie not to be denied his hat trick finished under the sticks with an Eagle dive through a deflated Halton side and finished off his performance after starting from the bench making it 30-12.
On the final set of the game Tedi exposed a tired fullback who had worked hard all game with a chip and kick that bounced back in his favour to finish with a full 6 for himself after converting the final kick of the day making it 36-12.
The scoreline flattered the home side in honesty, but the character to come back from a losing first half and several players stepping into new positions creating further competition for places was encouraging to see.
Next weekend the 14's play at home again against a strong Widnes Moorfield Tigers side, support is always welcomed.
Up The Ulvie 💙💛
