Loch Lurgainn gifted us much calmer conditions than expected this week, allowing a lovely paddle up to the beach for a hot ‘Kelly kettle brew.’ The views never fail to disappoint.

Autumn is in the air in the Summer Isles which brings the start of the low light magic that makes it feel like paddling in a painting.

Who else loves the autumn light?

Some of our favorite pictures from this years Orcadian Odyssey. Despite a mixed forecast our group managed a tremendous route along the east from Copinsay to a crossing out to Auskerry lighthouse and a circumnavigation of Stronsay returning via Shapinsay. We then shuttled to the infamous Eynhallow sound where we explored the tides and coast and a final downwind adventure from Birsay to Skara Brae. In all totaling around 150km of pure adventure.

Lots of memories gained, and for us some new coastline unlocked on our maps.

Where there’s rain there are rainbows.

Some pictures from an adventure earlier in the year which took us inland to the wonderfully scenic Loch Lurgainn, successfully escaping strong winds on the coast. We were treated this time with a particularly spectacular sunset and Kelly kettle cooked hot chocolates to warm up.

It’s becoming almost an annual pilgrimage for us to canoe and clamber to the top of Scotland’s most remote Corbett, Ben an Aodainn (Ben Aden). This is now our sixth successful summit.

This year we struck gold with a gentle north breeze in the morning allowing a sail/paddle in across loch Quoich, finishing with perfect mirror calm. After a clear view from the top the wind turned south In the afternoon allowing a sail assisted return and a leisurely cup of tea aboard the canoe.

This is a big day out totaling 20km of paddling and 10km of hiking but popular with Corbett baggers. The journey can be undertaken in an average of a 10-12 hour day or broken into a more leisurely two day camp adventure.

If you, like us, prefer to canoe instead of a long 11km walk in and out, please do let us know and we’ll help to make it happen.

Did you spot us on tonight? As part of Paul Murton’s grand tours program.

By odd co-incidence we were in the gorge today too! With a wonderful group and amazing conditions.

There is a saying that ‘When gorse stops flowering love will go out of fashion.’ We reckon the same applies to when canoeing stops being fun.
