A snapshot of a superb week around the north west coast with a super strong group from Denmark. Based camping at Scourie campsite we managed a lot in five days. Day one we we rounded Handa island with its many birds and caves. Day two we journeyed from Scourie to Kylesku through the Badcall islands, finding a unicorn (balloon) in Loch Shark. Day three was spent exploring rock hopping between Clachtoll and Lochinver. Day four was an epic rounding of Whiten Head in a force 5 gusting 8 with spindrift downdrafts. Finally a downwind surf in Loch Assynt to rinse away the salt.

An epic adventure with epic people.

By the Wind Sailors (Velella velella) arrived en masse this week around the shores of the north west this week. Often mistakenly described as jellyfish they are a hydrozoa: a floating community of individual organisms called Hydroids working together in symbiotic harmony.

Using their sail like structure they are at the whim of wind and tide they often congregate on ocean eddies to form ‘blue tides’ in their masses.

They catch their prey by tentacles containing stinging nematocysts, which are effective on plankton and thankfully rarely on humans, although exposure to sensitive areas such as eyes is not recommended.

It’s the first time we’ve personally seen them up here so naturally we got quite excited about it.
