Blackboys travelled to Herstmonceux on a wicket that looked among the best they had encountered all season. With conditions appearing ideal for batting, the Blackboys skipper had no hesitation in electing to bat. Opening pair H. Funnell and L. Poulton began cautiously as the Herstmonceux bowlers produced disciplined spells, maintaining tight lines and restricting scoring opportunities. After 15 overs, Blackboys had progressed steadily to 54 without loss. However, once the openers settled, they began to capitalise. Both batsmen rotated the strike well, found the gaps consistently, and accelerated the scoring rate. By the 30-over mark, Blackboys had advanced to an imposing 170-0. The pair’s dominance continued as both batsmen reached centuries in the 36th over. Their outstanding opening partnership of 225 finally came to an end in the 38th over when H. Funnell was dismissed for 103. L.Poulton remained unbeaten on 108*, helping Blackboys finish their innings on an impressive 230-1 from 40 overs.

In reply, Herstmonceux suffered an early setback thanks to the brute pace of C.Morton. Striking twice in his opening three overs, C.Morton reduced the hosts to 13-2 and immediately placed Blackboys in control. The pressure intensified when lightening fielding from S.Nugent resulted in a run out, M.Sharpe then joined the wicket-taking party with two wickets of his own. At 54-5, Herstmonceux faced an increasingly difficult challenge. G. Funnell then produced another typically economical and effective spell, claiming two wickets, D. Griffiths also playing a key roll in that as he took a sharp grab whilst sitting down behind the stumps… As the innings drew to a close, C.Eade maintained the pressure with a controlled spell before “Freddo” delivered the finishing touch, sending the off stump cartwheeling back towards the pavilion which allowed Blackboys to get comfortably over the line.

Blackboys Cruise Past Heathfield Park at the Fortress

After a week dominated by rain, the decision was straightforward when the Blackboys captain won the toss and elected to bowl first. Opening bowlers C. Morton and M. Sharpe set the tone immediately, both striking in their 1st over. Sharpe claimed the prized wicket of the Heathfield Park captain, who was brilliantly caught by G. Funnell with a sharp one-handed grab at slip. Kamikaze running left them 11-3 and the pressure continued to mount as C.Morton and M.Sharpe each added another wicket, reducing Heathfield Park to 20-5. Despite outstanding figures of 2 wickets apiece for just 20 runs between them, it was time for a bowling change. G. Funnell made an instant impact, dismissing 2 from his first two deliveries to leave Heathfield Park on the brink. A brief counter-attack from the number six helped the visitors pass 50, but it proved only a temporary reprieve. C. Eade then cleaned up the tail in impressive fashion, finishing with figures of 3-6 as Heathfield Park were dismissed for a modest total of 61.

In reply, Blackboys made a slightly nervous start, slipping to 18-3. However, L. Ferris and D. Griffiths combined to steady the innings and guide the chase. While fortune occasionally favoured them with a few inside edges, both batsmen recognised that positive intent was the best approach. Their partnership ensured a Blackboys win comfortably reaching the target inside 16 overs to secure a convincing victory.

Blackboys travelled to sunny Sidley looking to become the first side this season to take points from the league leaders.

Upon arrival, Blackboys were greeted by a rock-hard pitch and clear blue skies. After winning the toss, the Blackboys skipper unsurprisingly elected to field first.
C. Morton opened the bowling and immediately made his intentions clear, delivering a sharp short ball that flew past the batsman’s head. From that moment, the league leaders knew they were in for a contest. A leg bye and a guided shot to third man were the only runs conceded in the opening over as Blackboys made an excellent start.
M. Sharpe then had the ball in hand and quickly settled into an impressive rhythm. Delivering dot ball after dot ball, he troubled the batsmen with his accuracy and movement. His persistence was rewarded on the final delivery of the over when he sent the leg stump cartwheeling, leaving Blackboys firmly on top.
As C.Morton began his second over, the weather took an expected turn as it was only a matter of time before the dark clouds rolled in and spots of rain soon began to fall. Six deliveries later, the rain was hammering down and both sides were forced from the field. Unfortunately, the weather had the final say. Despite hopes of a resumption, conditions failed to improve and the match was abandoned. While the result was ultimately decided by the rain, Blackboys can take great pride in becoming the first team to take points from the league leaders, albeit with some assistance from the weather.

On another scorching Saturday. Blackboys welcomed Selmeston CC to the fortress. After winning the toss, the visitors unsurprisingly elected to bat first. Blackboys made an excellent start keeping things tight and giving little away. Selmeston found themselves under early pressure when their first wicket fell and just 11 on the board off 11 overs. However. Their number 3 counter-attacked impressively helping add 107 over the next 10 overs and shifting the momentum towards the visitors. Blackboys were in need of a breakthrough, and it arrived courtesy of G.Funnell, who claimed a sharp caught and bowled- although he may have known little about it. Shortly afterwards, Selmeston’s captain was dismissed thanks to J.Marchant and Blackboys appeared to have regained control of the contest. Some powerful hitting, combined with a couple of run-out opportunities that once again failed to go in favour of Blackboys, allowed Selmeston to accelerate and post a competitive total of 231.
A special mention to C.Morton who bowled 4 maidens from his first 4 overs and didn’t concede a boundary off his 9 overs.

In reply, Blackboys started brightly, racing to 25 off 3. However, the innings quickly lost momentum as both openers departed in quick succession. N.Rogers looked in good touch before being dismissed by a superb one-handed catch from the Selmeston skipper. With two more wickets falling cheaply, Blackboys slipped into trouble at 65-5. S.Nugent and D.Griffiths steadied the innings with an important partnership, taking the score to 124-5 and restoring some respectability to the chase. S.Nugent particularly impressive coming close to his maiden 50 for the club, falling just short on 46. However, when 4 wickets fell for 6 runs Blackboys found themselves staring defeat in the face at 130-9, still needing 102 from the last 10 overs. What followed was an extraordinary turn around. C.Morton launched a remarkable comeback, punishing anything on his pads and clearing the boundary with ease. Whatever came at him, seemed destined for the ropes. Supported by G.Funnell who remained unbeaten on 25* the pair produced a sensational last wicket partnership of 102 and C.Morton ending on 66*.

On one of the hottest days of the season so far, Blackboys travelled to The Nevill to face Tunbridge Wells Cricket Club. The home side won the toss and elected to bat first, making a confident start as they looked to put the Blackboys opening bowlers under pressure. However, their innings was not without fortune, surviving two sharp chances that were unlucky not to be taken.

The first wicket fell at 64-1, followed by another at 94-2, but the innings continued to be anchored by the Tunbridge Wells opener. A mix-up eventually led to his run out, leaving Blackboys seemingly in control of the contest. Aware that 200 might not be a competitive total on a good batting surface, the home side began to accelerate. With increased aggression came opportunities, including another run-out chance that appeared to have resulted in a dismissal, only for the decision not to go Blackboys’ way despite the batsman already beginning to leave the field. That moment proved pivotal as Tunbridge Wells pushed beyond 240 and finished strongly.

In reply, Blackboys arguably made the brighter start of the two sides, dispatching anything overpitched or short to the boundary and racing to 25 from the opening three overs. The score had progressed to 73-1 when H. Funnell was dismissed, bringing J. Marchant to the crease alongside the ever-reliable L. Poulton, who soon reached a well-compiled half-century. However, with both batsmen falling in quick succession and 100 runs still required from the final 10 overs, Blackboys needed an aggressive finish. T. Lawson briefly reignited hopes with two successive sixes, but a cluster of wickets soon followed and Blackboys were unable to maintain the momentum, eventually falling short of the target.
