So nice to be able to swim in skins (no wetsuit) and not get white fingers during or after a swim! Had to make the most of this ☀️🏊‍♀️🏊‍♀️🏊‍♀️ Also lovely to see the swim sessions getting busy and the swim community growing again at WeirWood.

If you haven’t tried open water swimming but would like to, you can book an introductory open water session with me to learn how to do it safely, address any fears you@may have, and enjoy the experience!

If you want to try open water swimming for the first time, or perhaps the first time in a while, come and build your confidence in a 1-2-1 session, address any fears you have and learn about key safety aspects and equipment you might need, and how to use the breath to calm the nervous system is also key to help deal with the cold or any anxiety.

If you are a more seasoned open water swimmer, but want to learn key open water skills like sighting to swim in a straight line, efficient breathing to reduce breathlessness, or work on general swim technique, or race skills (drafting, turning at buoys, breath training), then a 1-2-1 session at the reservoir is perfect.

I will be offering 1-2-1 coached sessions during the 8am swim slots on Saturdays and Tuesdays to start with, but get in touch if you cannot make these times.

If you want to improve your endurance or the ease of your breathing during swimming, use less energy to breathe, make sure your gas exchange in the lungs is efficient….start with looking at your land-based breathing.

Take my Free Breathing Assessment, which looks at your daily breathing patterns on land, as the first step to easier or more efficient breathing when swimming.

Awareness of how you breathe on land will give you a clue about how efficient your breathing is when swimming.

If you really want to learn how to connect with the water to send your energy forwards more in front crawl, come and join us for 2 days to learn how.

The first day works on connecting your body from head to feet so it works as a single unit and is more streamlined.

The second day teaches you how to generate forward momentum and execute a safe and efficient arm recovery, add a seamless breath and work on advanced synchronisations.

If you book both days, you will receive a 20% discount on the second day.

Cold water immersion, dipping and swimming have been shown to have multiple health benefits with regular practice. For instance, fewer hot flushes for women, reduced anxiety, improved mood, reduced inflammation, increased resilience to stress (cold in this case).

However, this activity can be daunting at first. There is the idea of submerging most of your body into cold water, often in open water where you cannot see the bottom!

If you are completely new to open/cold water and a bit anxious about it, I am offering an introductory session using the cold pool/bath/pod and cold shower in my garden in East Grinstead to teach you how to control your breathing, acclimatise and get into cold water in a very safe and controlled environment.

We take it completely at your pace, whether on a 1-2-1 basis or in a small group of up to 4 people. We also cover open water swimming equipment, safety issues and anything else you need to know to get started in open water swimming. The session lasts an hour in total.

A 1-2-1 60 minute garden session costs £45
Small group of 2-4 people costs £25 each

As a swimmer or triathlete, how do you train your breath and your endurance? Have you ever done any land-based breath training to improve your health and performance in the water?

Have you ever considered how you breathe on land on a daily basis? This will directly impact how you breathe during swimming or any other sport. It will also impact how fast you recover and even the quality of your sleep.

The first step is to start becoming aware of your daily breathing patterns on land.
* Do you breathe through your nose or mouth?
* Are you a shallow breather?
* What bout the speed of your breath, are there any pauses?
* Can you hear yourself breathe?
* Where does your tongue sit in your mouth when at rest?

A recent study of nearly 2000 athletes across sports and age groups found that over 90% exhibited dysfunctional breathing mechanics (not using correct breathing muscles).

Most people have some element of dysfunctional breathing and as an athlete, this can be affecting your performance, recovery and health, so if you haven’t considered this before, start becoming aware of how you breathe on a daily basis.

Our next functional breathing workshop for swimmers is on Sunday 5th July, 10.30am - 5pm at a stunning private 25m pool near Balcombe, West Sussex. I run this with Kath from

Our previous two workshops have sold out as this is a unique opportunity for swimmers of all abilities to optimise their physical and mental health, sleep, energy levels, as well as their swimming.

Most people are not breathing optimally and efficiently on a daily basis, including athletes at all levels. A recent study showed that over 90% of nearly 2000 athletes across different sports, ages and levels exhibited dysfunctional breathing mechanics.

Come and spend a day learning how we are designed to breathe on land and how this impacts our breathing during swimming, and how we have to adapt our breathing for swimming. We also look at ways to use the breath to warm up and recover, to increase focus and how to calm the nervous system. We learn proper breathing mechanics and you’ll take away lots of breathing exercises to integrate into your life/training.

“This workshop is full of practical help and information on the importance of how we breathe. The implications on how we breathe on our health and wellbeing are profound and not discussed enough. I would strongly recommend this workshop as an introduction to a new world of breathing correctly”.

Thank you for inviting me to join your swim camp - an amazing group of swimmers and coaches to work with.

I’m in Lanzarote this week on a swim camp run by and with my Oxygen Advantage Instructor hat on, I’m introducing the swimmers to the importance of functional breathing and land-based breath trading protocols.

Breath training should be part of every swimmers training or lifestyle as breathing affects every aspect of our health, including our sports performance and recovery.
