Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK reports that, in the last 5 years, 90% of accidental drownings occurred at open water sites, either inland or on the coast.

The dangers include:

⚠️ Sudden immersion can lead to cold water shock, causing you to gasp & breathe in water
⚠️ Riverbanks, cliff or quarry edges, reservoirs & canals may be unstable and difficult to climb onto when getting out
⚠️ Hidden & strong currents are difficult to swim against & may quickly take you away from safety
⚠️ Water depth is changeable & unpredictable
⚠️ …and many more

We have many swimmers in our Pelican community who enjoy swimming in the great outdoors, & by following some simple tips you & your family can enjoy open water safely too.

An Open Water Warning ⚠️

During the recent heatwave, news outlets reported a spate of deaths in open water over just a few days.

We know how tempting a dip might be, but everyone in our community – including children, teens & their parents – should be aware of the dangers of swimming in unsupervised open water & how to avoid preventable injuries & deaths.

How can I swim outdoors safely?

✅ Don’t swim alone – swim with a friend or an open water swimming group
✅ Tell someone else where you’re going and who you’re with
✅ Choose a venue known for safe swimming conditions
✅ Check the temperature of the water before you get in
✅ Know where your entry & exit points are

It’s only by sharing, communicating & understanding these vital messages that we’ll reduce deaths by drowning.

🛟Drowning Prevention Week: 13-20th June 2026

Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK Drowning Prevention Week is an annual campaign that aims to educate our communities, including children & young adults, in essential water safety & lifesaving skills, helping everyone to enjoy water safely.

The Pelican Centre backs Drowning Prevention Week every year, & we’re committed to water safety education that keeps members of our community safe in the water, both indoors & outdoors.

This year’s campaign targets 13-17 year olds. Drowning deaths in this age group have increased by 67% in recent years – preventable deaths that can be avoided by greater understanding, awareness, & speaking up when friends are taking deadly risks around water.

Today we’re about the environment, reflecting on our energy savings from the past year to create a cleaner, greener community asset for our local area.

Including the recent installation of new solar panels, continual investment helps us to operate sustainably & efficiently, with eco-conscious changes both large & small that contribute towards a cleaner local area for the years to come.

✅ Performing 36% more efficiently than a typical building of the same type
✅ 12 tonnes of CO2 emissions saved over the past year – that’s equivalent to 774 trees planted!

You’re making a huge difference too!

By making small changes such as using the water fountains instead of disposable bottles, & walking to the centre instead of driving, our Pelican community also plays a big part in helping us to make a positive difference to our local environment. Thank you.💚

Inclusive for everyone in our community 💙

From free-to-access programmes for members of the community who are looking for work, to dedicated gym, swim & classes for isolated people, the Pelican Centre is at the heart of community support, offering everybody the chance to Feel Good mentally, physically & socially, no matter their barriers.

Launched in 2026, Ambition with Here4You is a new government-funded project developed by the Pelican Centre that offers access to health & wellbeing to get members of our community back to work after a break, illness or injury, or long-term unemployment.

Ambition participants have free access to a number of classes, swimming & support in the Gym for up to 16 weeks.

🌛 After dark at the Pelican…

The work never stops at the Pelican Centre! Natalia put in a night shift last night while repair works were carried out to emergency lighting in the changing room areas.

Out-of-hours works like this mean we can keep the centre fully up-and-running during the day, investing in safety & sustainability to give you great value for money.

As today’s Seriously Social theme focuses on Employment & Skills, we’re delighted to introduce Eunan Jones as a new Pelican Centre nominated trustee.

The Pelican Centre’s board of trustees is entirely volunteer-led, benefiting from the expertise of people in our local community to drive the Centre forward & to achieve our charitable objectives.

Eunan already plays an important role in our community as a volunteer manager of Tyldesley Allotments Association & co-founder of Grow for Giving, a community project which provides day care for people who have dementia or a mental illness, among other services to support different members of our community.

Eunan says:
“To be recommended as a potential trustee of the Pelican Centre is a genuine honour.

As a long-time Pelican Centre member & gym goer, I appreciate how vibrant, well attended & important the Centre is to so many people.

Being a volunteer manager of Tyldesley Allotments Association & co-founder of Grow for Giving, I believe I can contribute passion, commitment & understanding of how crucial these resources are to our town.”

From a smile at the reception desk, to raising major funds to improve our facilities & services, volunteering at the Pelican Centre stretches far beyond personal fulfilment - it helps to improve the lives of members in our community.

We wouldn’t be Wigan Borough’s largest independent charitable leisure facility without the support of our volunteers. Thank you!
