Upgrade Day
With less than two weeks to go until 10 Under The Ben 2026, time was running out to fit all the new upgrades bought in the January sales to my hardtail before race day, so I manged to finally get it done this weekend and take the bike out for its first spin.
Although the Voodoo Bizango Pro which I bought for the Strathpuffer 2026 was a capable machine there was definitely improvements to be made, transforming the bike from a capable budget hardtail into a lightweight downcountry machine. I had already fitted a dropper seatpost and replaced the organic brake pads with sintered pads before the Strathpuffer.
I have now replaced the stock Rockshox 35 Gold 130mmm travel fork (2341 grams), with a Fox 34 Float Performance SC Grip 120mm travel fork (1520 grams). The Fox fork is significantly lighter and more sensitive to small bumps, improving front wheel traction and reducing rider fatigue.
I replaced the stock aluminium wheels and tyres Minion DHR II (1120g) front and High Roller II (940g) rear with a lightweight carbon wheelset with new tyres Barzo XC Race (765g) front and Mezcal XC Race (690g) rear, along with a Vittoria Air-Liner Tyre Insert Light XC (50g) to protect the lightweight carbon wheels from impacts on the rear wheel. The carbon wheelset and lighter tyres will reduce rotational weight making the bike feel faster, accelerate quicker and climb better. The carbon wheels will have better lateral stiffness, allowing for more precise handling through rock gardens and berms.
The 12 speed Deore shifter was replaced with a 12 speed XT shifter to improvements in shifting feel, speed and functionality.
The aluminium handlebars were swapped for carbon Race Face Next handlebars, reducing the weight and hopefully reducing hand fatigue on longer rides.
Larger 180mm brake rotors were fitted to replace the stock 160mm rotors.
And finally I replaced the 45mm stem with a 60mm Pro stem, increasing the reach to make the bike more comfortable for me, and putting more weight over the front wheel, improving traction and reducing the tendency of the front wheel to lift, creating a more aggressive climbing position.
The changes felt great on a wee spin this afternoon but the real test will be at 10 Under the Ben on the 25th April. Although I have a feeling that it will be the rider rather than the bike that’s the weak link on the day.
