A brilliant day of tennis at St John’s yesterday for the annual Betty Jenkins Mixed Doubles Tournament.
20 pairs took to the courts to compete for the trophy, with some great tennis throughout the day and Neil and Amanda taking the title. Congratulations to you both!
A huge thank you to Rosemary for organising such a lovely day and keeping everything running so smoothly, and to our volunteers who helped with refreshments and kept everyone going with croissants.
The day also included a very special moment as Liz Moffat, daughter of former St John’s member John Rawlingson, joined us to rededicate a new bench in her father’s memory.
John was a much-loved member of the club and a great friend of Betty Jenkins, as well as her mixed doubles partner. Following his death in 1981, club members and friends, including Betty, dedicated a bench to him at St John’s. More than 45 years later, John’s family have kindly replaced the original bench and restored its plaque.
Liz shared some wonderful memories of her dad and his love of tennis, friendship and St John’s, before presenting the Betty Jenkins Cup to our winners, Neil and Amanda.
Thank you to everyone who played, volunteered and came along. A really special day at the club, celebrating great tennis, friendship and a little piece of St John’s history.
