Ultra Coach Max Uesca certified ultra coach

Training for an ultra isn’t just about stacking miles. It’s about balancing real life — work, family, fatigue, stress, recovery — while still moving toward something big.

That’s where good coaching makes the difference.

I’m Max, an ultra running coach and podcaster based in the UK. After 20+ years coaching and training clients — and now specialising in ultra running — I help runners build sustainable, injury‑resistant training that fits their world, not the other way around.

I’ve got a degree in Sport, Fitness and Coaching, and I’m a UESCA‑certified ultrarunning coach. That foundation lets me blend movement quality, strength, fuelling, race strategy and real‑world logistics into a coaching approach that actually works for busy athletes.

I work with runners from their first ultra all the way to events like UTMB, the Spine, the Arc of Attrition and the South Downs Way, as well as athletes internationally.

My coaching is calm, evidence‑based and holistic — built to help you run further, feel stronger and stay consistent without burning out.

If you’re curious about coaching or want me to take a look at your current training, drop me a message or head to the link in my bio. Always happy to chat through your goals.

🚨 Big news in the UK ultra world today: Ourea Events has ceased trading.

This affects some of the most iconic mountain races in the country — including the Dragon’s Back Race, Northern Traverse, Lakes Traverse, and more.

In their statement, they explain that a mix of COVID debt, rising costs, reduced international participation, and lower‑than‑expected 2026 entries made the business unsustainable.

For the community, this is a huge moment.

For everyone who was due to run the Northern Traverse this month — my heart goes out to you.
I know how much training, planning, and emotional energy goes into preparing for a race like that. Having it pulled away at the last minute is incredibly tough.

And for anyone who had Dragon’s Back on their long‑term horizon, the uncertainty will feel just as heavy.

But here’s the truth:

Your training isn’t wasted. Your fitness is real. Your effort still counts. And there will be another challenge worthy of the work you’ve put in.

The UK ultra community is resilient. Events come and go, but the spirit of adventure doesn’t disappear.

If you’re feeling lost, unsure what to aim for next, need help choosing a new target — or just want a chat because this news has hit you hard — I’m here.

Mistake 2: Not Fuelling or Hydrating Properly

One of the biggest first‑race errors is skipping fuel early. For anything over an hour, that’s a problem. Your energy doesn’t fade gradually — it drops suddenly.

Here’s how to avoid the crash:

• Have a plan Going in blind is asking for trouble. I aim for around 90g carbs per hour in long runs and races.

• Fuel early First gel at 30 minutes, then every 30–45 minutes.

• Sip, don’t gulp Small, regular sips beat chugging water at aid stations.

• Train your gut Your stomach needs practice just like your legs.

• Know the course Check aid station locations and what they offer before race day.

Fuel early, fuel often, and your race will feel completely different. More mistakes coming soon. 🏃‍♂️💥

👀 Rumour mill is turning…

Word on the (frozen) trail is that previous guest .photography might be out on the this weekend 📸❄️

If that’s true, expect some seriously epic shots.

From pain faces at 3am to headtorches snaking across the Pennine Way, David’s knack for capturing the raw, gritty reality of ultras is right up there with the best.

Cold, dark, sleep-deprived… and possibly very well documented.

Spine athletes — you may want to check your best pain face 😅

🌙 Night miles hit different.

Out just before 6pm last night with Ben and Sarah for a proper adventure run.

20 miles from the hangars → Butser → back in a circular loop, ticking off just over 3,000 ft of elevation.

Running in the dark always feels a bit special — different focus, different rhythm, and a reminder that not all long runs need daylight to be valuable.

Headtorch on, legs moving, mind dailed in.
Loads of great chat, plenty of honest miles, and exactly the kind of prep that counts for The Spine and Arc of Attrition.

Different stimulus. Same goal. Proper fun. 🌌

Sometimes, the best runs are the ones that break the routine.

Ultra Tip 🏔️

If you’re not very good at running hills and you have a hilly race coming up…
👉 run hills.

There’s no secret workout, magic shoe, or shortcut.

You get better at hills by repeatedly questioning your life choices on hills.

Short ones. Long ones. Power hike them. Jog them.

Embrace the suffering. Adapt. Repeat.

Your future ultra self will thank you somewhere around mile 42.
