Weekend report

Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st June

Weather
The weather is set to improve over the weekend with a dry and pretty warm week forecast ahead.
Saturday will be more of a transitional day, there will still be a chance of a bit of drizzle lingering during a cloudy start. The further through the day we progress the better it should get, the sun will start to break through during the afternoon and there should be some good sunny spells by evening.
Temperatures will be in the low twenties, feeling humid still despite a light north westerly breeze.
Sunday looks like being almost wall to wall sunshine, maybe a bit of cloud drifting across later in the day. The light winds will swing round to the east by the days end and temperatures will climb to mid twenties, it should feel pretty warm.

Please note conditions are perfect for grass growth at the moment. Warm, humid and plenty of rain means every part of the course is growing fast. We have cut most surfaces an extra time this week to try and keep on top of it, but you could cut the place every day and still not keep up. So there’s a bit more laying cut grass around than we would like and things have lushed up and slightly slowed up as a result.

Weekend work
It’s a tough Saturday shift for our man in. Greens will be cut, bunkers full raked and markers set for the Simmons Hodge Bowl. A fairly early two tee start makes it very tight for time even when starting at around 5am as you need to get both nine hole loops progressing ahead of play at the same time.

A reminder that the new tee on the 1st will be in play from Saturday onwards, with the yellow and white tees being located on it from now on. Please treat it gently if possible!
It’s the same shift on Sunday with just a lot more time to get the work done working in order ahead of play.

Info
Friday was wall to wall cutting. Greens approaches, fairways, semi rough and rough were all cut throughout the day. We ironed the greens early on to try and maintain some pace despite the growth surge, alongside changing holes and full raking the bunkers. Another mechanical gremlin appeared very late in the day, with a hydraulic leak on the rough mower, something to fix early next week!

Friday 19th June

Weather
Fridays forecast is quite tricky to get right. There is a weather front approaching from the west which will arrive in the early hours of Friday morning. It is however fading as it reaches land and being pushed northwards by the high pressure system and south westerly breeze. By the time it crosses Cornwall during Friday morning there could still be some heavier rain left, or just showers and drizzle. If we are really lucky it might stay dry!
Most of Friday afternoon will be just cloudy with a low chance of drizzle, much like we had on Thursday. It will stay a humid 18-20° throughout the day.

Fridays jobs
The wet and humid weather means grass growth is strong so our day will be spent cutting what we can to keep the course as tidy as possible. Greens and approaches will be cut early alongside a hole change and an iron of the greens. Later in the day we will finish the weeks fairway cutting as well as going back over some of the faster growing semi rough and rough. Bunkers will need raking and we are halfway through edging sprinkler heads and boxes as well.

Info
A bit of a niggly week for machinery problems means we are a little behind with some of the cutting. It’s also just a year where conditions of perfect for growth, it’s a job just to keep up.
We may not be Shinnecock Hills thickness of rough but it will be pretty juicy by the end of the weekend in fast growing spots.
It’s very normal to have wear and tear problems mid season with high growth and lots of hours of use being put through the machines, but they can be time consuming. Thursdays problem with the fairway mower cost a few hours but was nothing our able mechanic couldn’t fix. We still got a fair chunk of cutting carried out through the day. Tees also had a double diamond cut and a slight tweak of a few perimeters to try and maintain the correct shape.

Thursday 18th June

Weather
Very little change in the weather over the next 24 hours, it’s looking like staying cloudy with the chance of mist, drizzle or very light showers at any point. It’s equally likely to just stay dry but murky, humid and overcast, very Cornish weather. Temperatures will stay muggy overnight at around 14-15° rising to around 20° during the day. Winds will stay as a light south westerly.

Thursdays jobs
There’s a lot of cutting to squeeze in over the next two days to prep for the weekend. On Thursday we will be cutting greens, fairways semi rough and finishing the weeks rough cutting as well. The tees will be getting a cut and I’m going to be reshaping and re-aligning them, which needs doing from time to time. You’ll see some dashed paint around them to help define any tweaks for next week’s cuts.

Info
As usual we had a wet start to a Wednesday, which made it all a bit sticky for us out prepping the course early on. Greens were cut, small area rough trimmed and the rest of the tee banks cut. We also strimmed the carpark entrance bank before the hospital parking got full.
Rough cutting was in progress all day as it’s still growing like mad. We completed an early tee divot as well this week so we can concentrate on course presentation towards the weekend.
Lastly we carried out two more jobs using our working at heights platform. The poles of the safety netting on the new 1st tee were clad with lagging in case of ball strike, so we are still on track for being in play on Saturday.
We also felled a dangerous leaning dead tree behind the 1st which was hanging out over the main road. With the platform we could attach some straps to the top so it could be part cut and pulled over safely. Very glad to get that one down, it’s been causing me some sleepless nights! The felled tree was quickly cut up, chipped and tidied away.

Wednesday 17th June

Weather
Another dull and cloudy day forecast ahead. The chance of showers and drizzle remains reasonably high overnight into Wednesday morning, though we didn’t see much at all on Tuesday at the time of writing. The most likely time for any significant rain seems to be early on Wednesday just as the cathedral cup is getting under way, which is becoming a bit of a pattern for the early starters over the last few Wednesdays. The likelihood of rain decreases slowly in percentage through the day but it will remain cloudy. The light south westerly breeze will still be dragging up warm and humid air, 19-21° the expected midday temperatures.

Wednesdays jobs
Greens cutting and rough cutting will get going early on Wednesday ahead of play. We will also be strimming and cutting the carpark entrance bank which is long overdue before the carpark fills up. Later in the day we will be finishing cutting tee banks and carrying out the last bit of high pruning for the week. Some more safety netting pole lagging might get installed as well.

Info
Tuesday was a very busy shift. Greens, tees, tee banks, fairways and rough were all cut or at least started. Holes were changed early on and bunkers full raked.
A granular fertiliser was also applied to the greens early to provide some baseline nutrition for the next six weeks or so. It’s an organic product so other than being a bit smelly it’s harmless. The forecast rain was supposed to start washing it in during the day, if none arrives we will use the irrigation tomorrow.
We had a busy day carrying out some high pruning using our working platform. The overhanging trees in front of the 16th (old 9th) tee were pruned back, this will enable us to use more of a very small tee to help spread the wear, just a few branches makes quite a difference.
We also hedge-trimmed the tall laurel hedge next to the 2nd ( old 13th) tee, this was in desperate need of a trim and a yearly task. We also managed to cut back the branches as far as we could on the right over the chasm, it’s certainly opened up the tee shot a fair bit again. Thanks to the volunteers who helped us clear up the debris from both jobs as well as having a good old general tidy up round the course.
Lastly the very first small wildflowers are starting to come out in a few of the beds, the rest should soon follow, especially if it warms up next week as forecast. Much later than normal this year, at least by two weeks, shows what an odd year of weather it’s been.

On Saturday our Lady Captain hosted her annual Lady Captain's Day, with a theme of 'Pirates ' and the course was awash with lady pirates, attach pictures of our best dressed pirates.

Lady Captain's Day winner 2026 is Daiwi Burley, pictured with our Lady Captain. Worth a special mention was Kat's astounding eagle on the 2nd (old 13th) and was the only 2 of the day!

Congratulations to all the prize winners, players and pirates. Everyone had a truly awesome day which was enjoyed by all.

Tuesday 16th June

Weather
A bit of a dull and cloudy day again on Tuesday, starting dry but there could be some drizzle and light showers arriving from late morning onwards. These could last on and off for the rest of the day or they could fizzle out completely. One of those days when it’s difficult to call the forecast correctly, Cornwall does love some mizzle though so if it can it will! Winds will be light and from the south west, temperatures a muggy 17-19°.

Tuesdays jobs
A busy day ahead with lots to cram in. Early on we will be cutting greens and tees, the remaining fairways will be finished as well. Holes will be changed, bunkers full raked and we may put out some granular fertiliser on the greens depending on the latest forecasts.
Later in the day we will be using our working at heights platform to carry out a couple of jobs. The high pruning by the 16th tee and the hedge by the 2nd tee the most likely. We will joining forces with the volunteers on some of this who are back in further usual Tuesday shift. In addition they will be having a general tidy up around the course, our thanks as always for their efforts.

Info
The week started very productively on Monday. Greens were verticut, cut and blown clean ahead of the seniors comp. After this we managed to squeeze in some cutting in and around play. Semi rough, approaches and fairways all trimmed. That may not sound a lot but it was a pretty flat out day for the team.
