💙 Drowning Prevention Month 💙

Cold water can be dangerous — even in warmer weather. That’s why it’s important to understand hypothermia, its signs, and what to do.

❄️ What is hypothermia?

Hypothermia happens when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, causing body temperature to drop to dangerous levels.

⚠️ Signs & Symptoms

Watch out for:
✅ Shivering
✅ Slow or slurred speech
✅ Loss of coordination
✅ Confusion or unusual behaviour
✅ Feeling very tired or weak
✅ In severe cases – reduced consciousness

✅ What should you do?

If someone may have hypothermia:
✔ Get them out of the water as soon as possible
✔ Move them somewhere warm and sheltered
✔ Remove wet clothing and replace with dry layers
✔ Warm them gradually (blankets, body heat)
✔ Give warm drinks if they are conscious
✔ Seek medical help if symptoms are serious

Cold water shock and hypothermia can happen quickly — being prepared and knowing what to do can save lives.

🌊 Stay calm, stay aware, stay safe. 🌊

A lot of schools are closing early, or closing entirely over the next couple of days, and you and / or your children may be looking to cool off in your local lake or river

⚠️ Just remember the water safety code: if you get into trouble, stay calm, float on your back and call for help.

Cold water shock can happen to anyone, even on a warm day. Your instinct might be to panic, but the best thing you can do is float.

🛟 Tilt your head back and keep your airway clear
🫁 Relax and focus on your breathing
🌊 Spread your arms and legs to stay balanced
🤲 Gently move your hands if needed
📞 Once calm, signal for help or swim to safety

If someone else is in trouble, don’t go in. Throw them something that floats.

💙 Drowning Prevention Month 💙

As swimmers reach the final stages of their journey, water safety becomes even more advanced. In Stage 7, swimmers work towards the Swim England Water Safety 3 Award — a comprehensive test of real-life survival skills.

This award is completed wearing a long-sleeved top and long trousers, helping swimmers experience how challenging it can be to move, float, and conserve energy in real-life situations.

Swimmers are challenged through a range of advanced scenarios, for example:
✅ Performing a safe straddle entry and managing deep water confidently
✅ Treading water, signalling for help, and swimming to safety
✅ Practising floating for longer periods and conserving energy, even in moving water
✅ Taking part in group survival skills such as the huddle position
✅ Learning self-rescue and shout-and-signal rescue techniques
✅ Understanding cold water shock and local water hazards

This award focuses on building not just physical ability, but also decision-making, awareness, and resilience — giving swimmers the skills they need to stay safe in open water and unexpected situations.

🎉 Once swimmers successfully complete the Water Safety 3 Award, a special certificate is available to purchase at reception for £3.80 — a fantastic way to celebrate this final water safety milestone!

🔥 Hot Weather Workout Reminder 🔥

General group exercise classes remain on unless otherwise informed, but with temperatures on the rise, it’s important to stay safe while staying active! 💪☀️

✅ Exercise early morning or later evening to avoid peak heat if you can
✅ Stay hydrated – drink water before, during, and after your workout
✅ Dial it back – reduce intensity if you feel fatigued or dizzy
✅ Wear light, breathable clothing
✅ Listen to your body – it’s okay to rest when it’s too hot

⚠️ Signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, nausea, headache, or excessive sweating. If this happens, stop immediately, cool down, and hydrate.

Your health comes first—there’s no harm in swapping a workout for a walk, stretch, or rest day in extreme heat. Stay smart and stay safe! 💙

With the hot weather incoming this week stay hydrated, keep cool and if you’re in the sun, get your sunscreen on!

To keep your house as cool as possible;

1) keep windows and curtains or shades closed during the day
2) open them at night when it’s cooler
3) if you have a fan at home, place it by a window facing inwards to circulate fresh air

The UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber heat health alert for parts of England until 8pm on Tuesday 23 June.

Most of us like to get out and enjoy the sunshine, but ending up in our Emergency Department suffering from the effects of heat is the last place you’ll want to be.

Beat the heat:
🥤Keep hydrated with plenty of cold drinks throughout the day
🧴👒👕Wear sunscreen, a hat and light, breathable clothes outside
🏠🌳Stay indoors in a cool space, or in the shade if you’re outdoors, during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm)

And don’t forget to check in with older and vulnerable people to make sure they are keeping cool and staying hydrated.

💙 Drowning Prevention Month 💙

As swimmers progress, water safety skills become more advanced. In our Stage 5 lessons, swimmers work towards achieving the Swim England Water Safety 2 Award.

This award is completed wearing a short-sleeved top and shorts over swimwear, helping swimmers experience how water feels and moves differently when clothed — an essential real-life safety skill.

To achieve this award, swimmers must demonstrate they can:
✅ Perform a fall-in entry safely
✅ Float on their back for 60 seconds and explain why it is important
✅ Tread water for 30 seconds without floatation
✅ Rotate 360° while treading water
✅ Signal for help while treading water
✅ Swim on the front, log roll onto the back to rest, then return upright
✅ Swim on the front, log roll and continue on the back to a floating object
✅ Swim 10 metres using survival stroke (long arm front paddle)
✅ Fully submerge, push from the pool floor and resurface repeatedly to breathe
✅ Demonstrate the HELP position using a floating aid
✅ Climb out safely without using the steps
✅ Show understanding of the four key water safety messages

These skills help swimmers learn how to stay calm, conserve energy, use clothing safely, and make the right decisions in unexpected real-life situations.

🎉 Once swimmers successfully complete the Water Safety 2 Award, a special certificate is available to purchase at reception for £3.80 — a fantastic way to celebrate this important achievement!
