AREA 12 TETRATHLON QUALIFIER & TRIATHLON ๐Ÿ‡๐ŸŽฏ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

What a weekend it has been!

Our first Area 12 JCB Pony Club Championship qualifier of the season got underway with the Area Tetrathlon, kicking off on Saturday with the riding phase at The Flamstead Field near Markyate. Eleanor, Georgina, James, Stella and Thea all rode brilliantly to start their competition campaign in style. Special congratulations to Eleanor, Georgina and James for achieving maximum riding points, while Stella proved that even the best competitors can occasionally take the scenic route with a tiny sat nav mishap costing just a few points! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sunday brought the excitement of the triathlon phases โ€“ shoot, run and swim โ€“ and all eight of our members were simply outstanding. Personal bests were achieved across many disciplines, showing the hard work, dedication and determination that each member has put in. A special mention must go to Thea P-S, whose enthusiasm, positivity and determination shone throughout the weekend and lifted everyone around her. Your energy was truly infectious!

๐Ÿ† Junior Home International Tetrathlon 2026

An unforgettable weekend for member Eleanor M at one of the biggest events on the Tetrathlon calendar!

Representing Central England, Eleanor travelled to Warwickshire for a weekend packed with competition, camaraderie and memories. Alongside the sporting action, competitors took part in the Saturday evening entertainment, with Team Central England performing a brilliant Peaky Blinders-inspired showpiece. After Friday and Saturday night preparations, the team delivered a fantastic performance, earning an impressive ๐Ÿฅ‰ 3rd place.

Eleanor got her competition off to a flying start on Saturday with an outstanding shoot score of 980, before producing a fabulous swim that saw her beat her personal best by 8 metres. This left her sitting in 3rd place after day 1.

Day 2 brought the highly anticipated ride phase, widely regarded as one of the toughest courses UK tetrathletes will face. Course walks with non other than Harry Meade on the Friday evening and again with Alex Connors on the Saturday morning helped in her preparations to face the technical and demanding course where only 15 of the 91 Junior Girls managed to jump clear and inside the time. Eleanor and Bonnie produced a superb round to achieve this positioning Eleanor in 1st place heading into the final phase.

With only a short turnaround between the ride and run phases, Eleanor faced the challenge of entering her weakest discipline while trying to defend her lead against some exceptionally strong runners. Despite giving it everything she had, she was unable to hold onto her podium position, eventually finishing a highly respectable 12th place. Alongside her brilliant team mates, Central England finished a fantastic ๐Ÿฅ‰ 3rd place and were the highest placed UK team.

A huge congratulations to Eleanor and, of course, to Bonnie, who played such an important role in this fantastic achievement ๐Ÿ˜„.

Pony Club branches have been sent the following email by Area 12 which we are sharing with you alongside advice from one of the leading veterinary hospitals. Please do bear this in mind when considering your ponies/horses flu vaccination programmes. We will forward any further communication as and when it is received.

"Equine Flu - Passports.
I know that you are all being very diligent with regard to this and are aware that those equines that have been vaccinated against equine influenza are much better protected and it is strongly advised that all equines are vaccinated within 6 months.

Currently the rule is for 12 monthly annual booster, but going forward some events ie Bramham and more than likely the Pony Championships - where equines from all over the nation will be stabling together - can opt to make their own protective rules and insist on a the booster being within 6 months of the event. Please bear this in mind when you are advising your members and consider these actions when organising PC camp etc.
If equines have been vaccinated since March 2026 they are ahead of the game, if they are not due their booster until September/October, they should be considering and may have to be vaccinated earlier to meet some events criteria - further guidance about timing is in the Red Health and Safety Rule book."

As a result of the increase in reported cases of equine influenza (EI) around the UK, the Equine Infectious Diseases Action Group (EIDAG) has recommended that there needs to be a period of increased vigilance and monitoring to help prevent a further spread of the disease.

To ensure the continued safe running of competitions, the various equestrian bodies across the UK are implementing new protocols for venues that operate under their rules, as are many other show and training centres that run clinics and arena hire as well as competitions. This includes passport checks on arrival and a requirement for up-to-date vaccinations. Please check the requirements of the relevant discipline governing body, or the individual venue or local organiser before attending an event or clinic.

Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons recommends that horse owners who are planning to attend shows, competitions, camps etc. this summer, as well as any informal gatherings with other peopleโ€™s horses, should bring forward their horseโ€™s annual vaccination to ensure that their horse has had a booster within the last six months. Horse owners should also monitor their horses carefully, including taking temperatures regularly.

We also strongly recommend that if you are purchasing a horse or bringing a new horse onto a yard, you ensure it is vaccinated before it is moved onto your yard and quarantined for a period before mixing with other horses.

If you have any concerns that your horse is displaying any signs of equine flu, you should not attend any gatherings and contact your vet for more advice.

See further information about EI on our website rossdales.com/equine-flu
