Exercising on holiday - Are you a Yes or a No?

You can probably guess that I'm a yes...for me, it's about maintaining movement and feeling refreshed and energised throughout the holiday and when I return.

So whether it's a brisk walk on the beach, a jog through the streets of a new town or city or some yoga in the hotel room, daily movement helps me enjoy my holiday even more and creates some precious me time and headspace.

What home exercise equipment is best?

Listening to an interesting podcast about the importance of building muscle...

The benefits go beyond just looking trimmer, feeling stronger and strengthening our bones.

It can change metabolism, reversing insulin resistance and other risk factors for chronic disease such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

And it’s equally important for reducing sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), protecting our skeleton, improving mobility and balance, and reducing fall risk with age.

The reality is that unless you are doing some form of strength training, you start to lose muscle mass from the age of 30. That downward trajectory continues unless and until you start working those muscles!

Strength training does not have to involve lifting heavy weights in the gym - body weight exercises work really well as do exercises using lighter weights.

If you’re keen to try strength training (or get back into it), I offer 1 to 1 Personal Training at my studio in Northchurch and online classes on a Monday morning.

Squats, hip hinges, glute bridges and clamshells...some of my favourite strength exercises for the lower body because they help with:
✅ Functional movement (such as getting out of a chair and walking up stairs)
✅ Glute strength (super important as most people have lazy glutes)
✅ Joint stability (especially in the knees and hips)
✅ Core strength (you need to switch your core muscles on to do
them properly)

Plus you can progress and regress them to suit your ability level.

Low impact bodyweight and light dumbbell sessions to help you:
-build strength and tone muscles
-stabilise the joints and improve balance
-improve core strength

These 45 minute live online sessions are perfect if you’re new to strength training, you’re getting back into it after a break or you need to add strength training into a running or other fitness programme.

Monday mornings 9am to 9.45am.

�What to look for in a PT...
✅ Qualifications (obviously!)
✅ Good listening skills
✅A niche (specialising in a particular client group)
✅Creativity (you don’t want your workouts to be boring)
✅Adaptability (for when the planned workout is not the workout you need on that particular day)
✅Rapport
⭐️ It doesn’t matter how fancy the equipment is or how fancy they are. What matters is that you like, trust and feel inspired by your PT.
⭐️A good PT will push you harder than you’d push yourself, but will always be watching out for cues for when it’s time to ease off or change things around.
⭐️They’ll ask you how you’re feeling at the start of your session and they’ll be ready to adapt to how you’re feeling on the day.
⭐️They’ll make your sessions interesting and varied, so you come away thinking that the hour went quickly.
⭐️They’ll check in with you when you have to miss sessions because you’re injured or ill. They’ll never push you to come back to training until you’re ready.
⭐️You’ll want to go to your sessions because you enjoy spending time with them and you come away feeling upbeat and energised.

Look at websites and social media accounts, ask for recommendations and read testimonials from their clients.

Think about whether you want to train in a gym or you want a more private setting - there are pros and cons to both (I can say this honestly having worked in both settings!)

And before you send an email or pick up the phone, ask yourself “does this person inspire me”?

Anxiety is something we are all living with right now - the horrifying unfolding of events in Ukraine, the lasting effects of the pandemic and a general sense of unease that the world is not in a good place right now.

During March and April, myself and 3 other wonderful wellness practitioners are going to be bringing our collective expertise on dealing with anxiety - by sharing our own experiences, giving you tips and advice and most of all, creating a safe and supportive space for open conversations.

We're doing this as a new Facebook group, which is a community space for women in midlife to support their wellness and to feel seen, heard and held. It's called the Midlife Expansion. I'd love for you to join:
