Great to see the results of this research today. Focusing on colon cancer but according to other studies, similar benefits are also applicable across several other cancer types. Exercise really can have a positive impact on outcomes and recurrence :-)

Risk of dying was cut by a third after colon cancer patients dialled up exercise levels.

Fatigue is the most common and debilitating side effect of cancer treatment. Light to moderate intensity exercise can help reduce fatigue by increasing energy levels and strength, improving sleep and reducing anxiety, pain and nausea.

If you would like to build strength and improve your ability to do everyday tasks my cancer rehab exercise classes could really help. I am a qualified L4 Cancer Rehab Exercise Instructor and the sessions are suitable for all abilities . DM me for more information.

Exercise after a cancer diagnosis has many benefits. This quote from one of my class participants sums up just a few:

'Before starting these classes, and having just finished my treatment, I was feeling very tired, having two or three naps a day with no energy. I also had a lot of muscle wastage from the treatment and found it very hard to get motivated. Once I started these classes, I found that I was starting to get my strength back, and this gave me more motivation. I can now walk 3 to 4 miles without feeling totally fatigued, which is also improving my mental wellbeing.'

Canrehab classes currently running at Aqua Vale on Wednesdays 2.30 - 3.30pm. DM me for me for more info.

This podcast from Zoe Science & Nutrition provides an interesting analogy on the effects of cancer treatment on the body and how exercise can help. The effects of some cancer treatments (particularly chemo) are not dissimilar to what astronauts’ experience in space in terms of muscular deconditioning and weakening of the cardiovascular system.

Key takeaways include how exercise can reduce post treatment cardiovascular disease by 30% and that even 4-6 weeks of prescribed activity in the prehab stage (from point of diagnosis before surgery) can have a big impact on post treatment recovery. It is never too soon or late to start exercising after diagnosis and that what is important is starting where you are currently at, building slowly and listening to your body (resting on days when needed, capitalising on days where you have more energy). Have a listen!

In today’s episode, we explore the intriguing connection between NASA research and easing side effects of cancer treatment.

It was a pleasure to support Chris Gregory at the Leap Partner Forum. I have been part of the Can Move programme supporting the wellbeing of people living with a cancer diagnosis by helping them become or stay active. Thanks to funding facilitated by Leap, I was able to set up a class at Aqua Vale in Aylesbury 18 months ago which is thriving!
