One of the interesting revelations I had at the Exbury Wellness Festival was during a breathwork session with Coach Graham Carter.

He spoke about placing the tongue on the roof of the mouth when breathing through the nose.

It caught my attention because it's something I've heard many times before.

In Tai Chi and Qigong, we're taught the same thing.

I've also come across similar references in spiritual traditions and religious texts throughout the years.

Why?

Perhaps there are physiological reasons.

Perhaps it helps posture, breathing mechanics and relaxation.

Perhaps it helps connect different parts of the body and create a more efficient breathing pattern.

Or perhaps there is something deeper.

As I reflected on it afterwards, another thought came to mind.

When your mouth is closed, you can't talk.

You listen.

You observe.

You become more aware of what's happening around you and within you.

In a world where everyone is rushing to speak, react and be heard, maybe there is value in spending a little more time breathing, observing and listening.

Whether the lesson comes from breathwork, Tai Chi, meditation or faith, the message seems remarkably similar.

Slow down.

Breathe.

Listen more than you speak.

You might be surprised by what you discover.

What a fantastic weekend at the Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway Wellness Festival 🌿☀️

Over the course of the weekend I had the pleasure of delivering four Tai Chi sessions, introducing people to the principles of Neigong, Qigong and Tai Chi.

We explored how Neigong helps us develop our inner state, how Qigong teaches us to connect and move the body, and how Tai Chi brings those principles together through mindful movement.

On Sunday we even finished with a little pushing hands practice, giving people a glimpse into the martial roots hidden within the art.

The weather was beautiful.

The people attending the sessions were warm, open and genuinely interested in learning.

The other practitioners were incredible and it was a privilege to share the weekend alongside so many talented people helping others improve their wellbeing.

Between teaching sessions I was fortunate enough to experience some wonderful offerings myself, including breathwork, a sound bath and Rahanni energy healing.

One of the things I loved most was seeing so many different approaches to health and wellbeing brought together in one place, all with the same goal of helping people feel better, move better and live better.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended a session, stopped by for a chat or shared part of the weekend with us.

And of course, thank you to the team at Exbury for creating such a welcoming and positive event.

Good people.

Good energy.

Beautiful surroundings.

I can't wait to do it all again next year 🫶🌿

Another great post from Coach Mark Tucker 👊

IF YOUR ATTACKER DIES… IS IT SELF-DEFENCE OR MURDER?

This is one of the most misunderstood areas of self-preservation.

Many people believe that if you strike an attacker and they die as a result of their injuries, you will automatically be charged with murder.

That is simply not true.

In England and Wales, the law recognises your right to defend yourself and others.

You do not have to wait to be punched, stabbed, or assaulted before taking action if you honestly believe an attack is imminent.

The question the courts will ask is not:

“Did the attacker die?”

The question is:

“Was the force you used reasonable in the circumstances as you honestly believed them to be?”

If you are facing a genuine threat and use reasonable force to stop that threat, the fact that the attacker is seriously injured or even dies does not automatically make you a murderer.

However…

Self-defence is about protection, not punishment.

The moment the threat stops, your justification for using force begins to disappear.

If the attacker is no longer a danger and you continue to assault them out of anger, revenge, or retaliation, you may find yourself on the wrong side of the law.

The objective of self-preservation is not to win a fight.

It is not to hurt someone.

It is not to teach them a lesson.

The objective is simple:

Stop the threat. Create an opportunity to escape. Go home safe.

Remember:

⚠️ Self-defence is judged on what you honestly believed at the time.

⚠️ The law recognises that decisions during violence are made in fractions of a second.

⚠️ You are not required to weigh your response “to a nicety” in the middle of an attack.

⚠️ But your actions must remain defensive, not punitive.

Self-defence is not about what happened to the attacker.

It’s about whether your actions were reasonable when you believed your life, or the life of another, was in danger.
