One of the interesting revelations I had at the Exbury Wellness Festival was during a breathwork session with Coach Graham Carter.
He spoke about placing the tongue on the roof of the mouth when breathing through the nose.
It caught my attention because it's something I've heard many times before.
In Tai Chi and Qigong, we're taught the same thing.
I've also come across similar references in spiritual traditions and religious texts throughout the years.
Why?
Perhaps there are physiological reasons.
Perhaps it helps posture, breathing mechanics and relaxation.
Perhaps it helps connect different parts of the body and create a more efficient breathing pattern.
Or perhaps there is something deeper.
As I reflected on it afterwards, another thought came to mind.
When your mouth is closed, you can't talk.
You listen.
You observe.
You become more aware of what's happening around you and within you.
In a world where everyone is rushing to speak, react and be heard, maybe there is value in spending a little more time breathing, observing and listening.
Whether the lesson comes from breathwork, Tai Chi, meditation or faith, the message seems remarkably similar.
Slow down.
Breathe.
Listen more than you speak.
You might be surprised by what you discover.
