On a damp and drizzly Thursday evening, the B team played their knockout cup match vs Cary Park. The weather was pretty miserable ☔, but they had a few hardy supporters in Sarah, Velma, Claire and Abi who sat under the umbrella ⛱️ to shelter from the drizzle, eat some snacks and support from the sidelines. 📢 🤩

They put out their top team and Greg/Pam and Lisa/Rud had some nice rallies, but were on great form and dominated the match in no time, taking all four sets in the first rubber. In the second half, we played really well in the worsening conditions 🌧️ and both pairs won the third sets easily. So at 6-0 up, we had secured the win as it is a knockout format. They started the final two sets, but due to the dismal weather, they decided to finish as the conditions were terrible. Well done to Totnes B, who now advance to the final on the 13th Sept, against Avon Vale. Great effort good luck in the final! 🍀💪

Ladies B played their final match of the Summer League last night, down at Kingsbridge. Carla played with Della in her first match for Totnes. They faced tough opponents in the Kingsbridge first pair of Tabby and Ruth and lost 3-6, 2-6. Kate and Velma got exactly the same scores in their match. They were up against it in the second rubber and lost 0-6, 0-6.
Della and Carla had a much closer match against the second pair of Sonja and Jo and had to battle hard in two tight sets. They came so close to getting some points and had a really good match, but in the end they sadly lost 5-7, 5-7. 🙁 It was a tricky season for the B's this year with some availability issues and also they faced some very good teams! In the end, they didn't win any matches, but got involved and enjoyed playing. 😀

A couple of our members participated in the Dartmouth Regatta Tennis Tournament last week. 🎾

Congratulations to Ray Armstrong who had a very successful tournament and won the Men's singles 70+ and Men's Doubles 70+. In doubles, he played with Martin Sharp and they won the final 6-3, 6-0. 🏆
In the singles, he had a really tight QF and won the third set tie-break 10-5, to reach the semis, which he also won. He then faced the number 1 seed in the final. He battled through a first set tie-break losing 6-7, but came back stronger in the second to win it 6-3. It all came down to a 10 point tie-break to decide the match and Ray took it 10-4, to win the MS 70+ final! What a fantastic result and two great wins. Well done. 💪🏆🥇🥳

Rud entered the Men's singles, Men's singles 45+, Men's Doubles 45+ and Mixed Doubles 55+. He had a great week and won a round of MS, but then focussed on the age group matches. In MS 45+ he had a tight match in the QF and won in a third set tie- break 10-7. In the semis, he won 6-3, 7-6, to advance to the finals. The final match was really close and after another tie-break, he sadly lost 1-6, 6-7 - great effort. 👏

In the MD 45+ he also reached the final, but faced the 1st seeded pair and they lost 6-0, 6-4. Onto the XD 55+ and he reached his third final of a busy week! 👍 They sailed through the QF and semis, but faced tougher opposition in the final. It was a very tight match and in the end, after yet another tie-break, they lost 3-6, 6-7. Well played on a great week of tennis! 😀

The A team played their knockout cup match vs Avon Vale on Monday and it was a must win game to advance to the final. Abi and Andrew got off to a fantastic start against the first pair of Nikki and Tim. They played some solid tennis and had great rallies to take both sets 6-1, 6-2. 💪 On the other court, Claire and Paul D played Ollie and Julie and it took them a while to get going and they lost both 2-6. So we were pretty even with 2 sets all and a game up at the midway point! It was all to play for and we were optimistic for a strong second rubber, needing another three sets to secure a win and every game counted. Abi and Andrew were coming to the end of their first set after being 3-0 up, but then losing several games to the opposition to reach 5-6. They looked across and could see that Paul and Claire had just lost both their sets 0-6, 2-6 and combined with the fact that they had given away too many games that set, it was sadly all over (even if they won the set) and the numbers meant that Avon Vale had won. They tried to stay positive, but concentration dipped a little and despite reaching the tie-break and fighting hard, they lost it 6-7.🙃 There was some great tennis and brilliant rallies and they got back on track and zipped through the final set to take it 6-1!😀

Congratulations go to Avon Vale for the 5-3 win and a really enjoyable evening of tennis, played in good spirits.😀 Bad luck team, but Totnes B are still in it and if they can beat Cary Park on the 3rd September, then they'll face Avon Vale in the final! Good Luck. 💪🤞🍀

Thanks also to Kate and Andrew for bringing their delicious homemade prize winning Victoria sponge cake from the village show - it was amazing 🍰 and hopefully they weren't looking to take any home as the whole lot was devoured. 🫣🤩😂

Ladies B played their penultimate match on a very warm, sunny Saturday afternoon. Velma and Sarah lost 2-6, 3-6, whilst Della and Caroline lost 2-6, 1-6. They didn't have much luck in their last sets either and lost both of them. Sarah and Velma had a really competitive second half and were 5-6 down into the first. Sarah was serving to get them to a tie-break and they came back from 15-40 to reach deuce. After several advantages, they were unable to convert and it was such a shame as they lost 5-7. However, they were determined to get something for all their efforts and stormed through their final set to get a 6-1 win. Overall score was 1-7 🙃
The season has been tricky for the B's and finding a team has been challenging at times, but they will be pleased to get their final match played on the 2nd September.

Mixed B played their last match on Thursday vs Newton & Noss and were looking to confirm their second place in the league. They did the maths and worked out they only needed to get 3 sets to secure it. Rud and Linda faced the first pair and won 6-3, 6-2. Whilst Velma and Keith had two tough sets, they fought hard and won both 6-4, 7-5. 👏 Therefore, at the half-way point the pressure was off and so just played to get as many points as possible. The opposition was too good for Velma and Keith and they lost 3-6, 2-6. However, Rud and Linda quickly got theirs done in no time and won 6-1, 6-2! 💪

Well done to all the B team on a fantastic season and they were hot on the heels of the A team the whole time. In the end, they were just 3 points behind! 😮 A great effort from both mixed teams this year and they have proved the high calibre of players at Totnes, by taking first and second place in the Summer League, way out in front of the other teams. Big thanks goes to the team captains, Abi and Sarah for organising the teams and to the players who committed to making it such a success! 👏🤩🥳

There are just the Cup matches left to play for both. B's will play Cary Park and the A's take on Avon Vale. If they were both to win🤞, then the final would be a shoot-out between them to see who takes home the trophy! 🏆 Good Luck. 🍀🧧

Men's B faced Kingsbridge on Tue in their decisive last match and to avoid relegation to Division 2, they needed to win 6-2 overall. In the first half, Sean and Joe got 4-6, 6-2 and Paul D and Paul C won 6-2, 7-5. So it was looking good at 3-1 up. In the second rubber the two Paul's won both their sets 6-2, 7-5 and so it was now all down to Joe and Sean who had lost their first 2-6. It all came down to the final set and the pressure was on with spectators willing them on. They battled really hard and got to 3-3, but after losing their service game, the match slipped away and they lost 3-5. 😕🤦

Unbelievably, they have now drawn with Kingsbridge on 20 points and so the games will need to be counted and if still equal, it's likely there could be a play-off to decide who is in 5th place! 🤷 Good effort by the team and they were so close to getting it. 🙃

Last Saturday the Men's C team played their final fixture at home vs Cary Park B. There was a buzz down at the courts with Ladies B and Men's C all playing at the same time and lots of tennis to watch. 🎾 Cam and Martin L had a really tough first set and just missed out 5-7, but then their level dipped in the second and they lost it 1-6. Barry and Matt were outplayed in their first half 0-6, 2-6, but upped their level in the second half. They had a really close third set, but were unable to get a win - 4-6, 2-6. Cam and Martin were unable to make headway in their remaining sets and lost 2-6, 1-6. 🙃 Overall loss 0-8.

It was the first season trialling a Men's C team and despite the losses, everyone really enjoyed playing and it gave more people a chance to get involved with match play. They didn't take away any wins, but they had fun. 😀🍻 The Captain can now work on strategizing for next year with pairings and which teams need stronger players! Good effort guys in a competitive division.
