Light, delicate, thin. Full-bodied, meaty, strong.

These are the words my students reach for when I ask them to describe the different qualities of their vocal registers. And they're spot on.

Most people can recognise these textures. But not so many singers know how to control them, and use them purposefully.

You might know them as head voice and chest voice. And in a certain section of your range, there's a whole zone of notes where YOU get to choose which one you use.

Take one note in that range... you can give it a light, delicate sound, or a thick, powerful one. It's the same note, and you can make it sound different deliberately ✨

You can sing a line tenderly one time, then bold and defiant the next. It's one way you can paint your song with different emotional colours, and really express what it means. It takes your listener on a deeper journey through the story of the song. 🎨

There's a lot more to it, so I've written it all up in a new blog post for you, with examples to try at the piano and a video where I demonstrate each sound.

Have a read here: https://singwithstyle.com/blog/b/control-your-vocal-registers

Then have a go, and see if you can find your own transition zone, where your voice switches from light to full.

Where does yours sit?

I'd love to know. 🎶

I’d like to tell you about my student Karina, because what she achieved still makes me happy when I think about it.

She had SUCH a gorgeous voice ✨ - warm, sparkly, full of feeling. She’d been singing to herself since she was a child, with a burning desire to get out and perform.

But every time she got close, she got stuck. She would plan to go to a local open mic night, 🎤 get dressed up, have a friend meet her there, and then just couldn’t step out the door of her house. Every time. For months, years even.

Growing up, her Dad was constantly negative about her singing, telling her to shut up, that her voice was rubbish. 😢 She felt she wasn’t allowed to be heard, and she had zero confidence.

When she came to me for vocal coaching, I could quickly see it wasn’t her core need. What was really holding her back were those ingrained negative beliefs.

Alongside the singing work, I use a tool called EFT, or tapping. 🪄 One session, of about 15 minutes, focused on one sentence the main issue she struggled with.

The very next night, she went to her open mic night. She walked through the door easily, surprising herself! She performed, and LOVED it. And the audience loved her singing too. 👏

This makes me happy every time I think about it. 💖 The thing that enabled her to perform was giving herself permission to be heard, which was what she’d never felt before.

If this resonates with you and you’d like that same kind of support, I’d love to have a chat. Free consultation link is in the comments.

May you sing with style, joy, and brilliance. ✨ Love, Selena x

Are you an Opener or a Closer? 🎤
Most singers don't know what that means - but once you do, it might explain something that's been bugging you.

Every time you finish a note or phrase, your vocal folds end in one of two positions - open or closed. If you're a Closer, you're working much harder than you need to. You might even be making that gasping sound between phrases - which interrupts the flow of the music and makes breathing feel like a struggle.

Watch the reel to find out which one you are, and one simple thing to do differently next time you sing. You'll feel the difference straight away 🎶

It was so much fun leading this singing workshop at the Dart Music Festival in Dartmouth in May. 🎶 It was a great turnout and lovely acoustics in this gorgeous church-cum-community centre.

I led 'Summer Is Icumen In' which is a delightful 12-part round from the 13th century. 🕰️

Of course it filled us with those early Summer good vibes of nature springing into life all around us. 🌿

Plus 2 other summer songs, and everyone left on a really good buzz!
Maybe see you there next year?

Or if you'd like me to lead an easy singing workshop for all levels of singers, at your festival or event, let me know. 😊
Happy Summertime! ☀️

I've just got back from two weeks in Austria, and it was a magical trip.

Me and my partner went to Salzburg by train from London, it took 12 hours and it was wonderful to see the landscapes of Europe unfold before us. The city is stunning, set in a great bowl of river-plain surrounded by the Alps, and we had a brilliant time exploring city and mountain, river, markets and bars, palaces, fortresses, lakes and villages.

It's a legendary musical heartland, as Mozart was born and composed many of his famous works there. And it's where they filmed The Sound Of Music, so you can't help but sing 'The hills are alive' when you're out wandering the mountain pastures. 😄

Also loads of people go there for the Sound of Music tours so, and it's hilarious, you see people of all ages and nationalities dressed up in traditional Austrian costumes doing formation dances in the famous Mirabelle Gardens while singing 'Do Re Mi' to a backing track booming out of big loudspeakers! 😂

We tasted some solid Austrian fayre, darn good beer and their classic cheese dumpling in beef broth with awesome potato salad. Our daughter is out there studying for the year so it was lovely to hang out with her and have her as our local guide.

We stomped up some big mountains, it was hard work but the views made it so worth it! I'm definitely fitter now. 🥾

Now I'm back I'm getting into recording some more of my own songs, which is such a fun creative process.

And I'm here to support you with your voice and singing so just reach out if you want my help. 🎶

There's a moment I notice quite often in singing lessons.
Someone takes a breath, gives a slightly awkward laugh, and says "I'm not really a singer…" - while standing there about to sing. And I always think: something in you disagrees, or you wouldn't be here. 🌱

I'm thinking of one student who started exactly there. She kept stopping, not because she couldn't sing, but because she didn't trust what might come out. So we kept things simple and built it up gradually, without any pressure to sound 'great'.

A few weeks later, she sang in front of a few friends. She was nervous and it wasn't perfect, but she did it anyway. Afterwards she laughed, she was so relieved! 😅 She had got through it, and that meant a lot to her.

That's often where confidence starts to become real. Not from feeling completely ready, but from having done something and knowing you can do it again. ✨

So I'm curious - what might that look like for you right now? It doesn't have to be a big leap, just something that feels slightly uncomfortable but doable.

If you're exploring this at the moment, leave a comment and share what you're working on. 🎶
