Case Study for Personal Training #2 - Vernon Gay
I launched Devon Ceramics over 40 years ago and we now employ over 200 people, mainly in Devon, and our offshoot high street business China Blue staffs 30+ additional employees. China Blue runs 7 days a week, and dealing with suppliers from all corners of the world is a 365-day a year job. We are also affected, like so many other UK businesses these days, by supply-chain logistical issues and staffing challenges, all of which place additional demands on my free time.
Since reaching my 60s I have worked really hard to try and make more time for myself. The older I become the more precious every hour seems to be. My daughter is slowly taking over the reins of the business and whilst I remain CEO for now, she is COO and nearly ready to take over the entire operation. I never plan to stop working completely, as it gives me a lot of satisfaction and pride to remain immersed in what I have grown from a one-man start-up into becoming one of the South Hams’ largest private employers.
I began doing 1:1 Personal Training with Rory about 2 years before the pandemic. My initial objective was simply to gain some muscle mass, as my demanding business and high-energy lifestyle meant that if I wasn’t careful I would tend to become too skinny. I know that for some people that would seem to be a good problem to have! But being unfit - whether fat or thin - is not good at any age.
Way too often I would find myself skipping meals in a flurry of work, or eating on the fly. Leading up to the start of the pandemic Rory’s workouts once or twice a week and regular cardio classes helped me gain over 6kg in lean muscle and lose 5% body fat. Our sessions totally changed my physique, from scrawny/lean to toned/buff. I have never felt so strong nor looked so good (I am told!) and am very happy to be the living proof that even beyond 60 it’s not too late to transform how you look and feel.
Since the end of the pandemic I have more than redoubled my efforts with Rory, to make up for lost time. Now I am joined by my son and we train privately at least twice and often three times a week, and we both attend a handful of group classes as well.
My fitness at present is if anything even better now than in early 2020, and I really look forward to every session. We never get the same workout and it’s really exciting to enter each session not knowing what’s coming: Legs? Core? Cardio? HIIT? Strength? Endurance? Circuits? Or a bit of all the above?
I thoroughly recommend Personal Training with Rory, especially if you are short of time (and who isn’t?) No matter how successful you may be in life, if you become unhealthy due to your lifestyle you will not be able to enjoy the fruits of your success. If every hour you have is precious, make sure you don’t waste a single one.
