Rule number 2. Keep doing rule number 1.

Self-betterment might be the best thing you can spend your time, money, and effort on.

It never ceases to amaze me how much a couple of gym sessions and a few diet tweaks can change someone’s life.

One of the less talked about benefits? Just having a task to work on. A time each week to zone out and get to work. A goal to chip away at, bit by bit.

Don’t be quest-less.

Wanting progression and wanting the next step is absolutely fine, but don’t let that feeling take away from the progress you’ve already made.

I’ve seen people completely turn their lives around for the better and still spend 100% of their attention on what they haven’t got going for them, or what they could be.

Yes, keep moving forward and keep growing — but the odd pat on your own back won’t do you any harm either.

Live in the now. Not the future.

Remember…

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s progress.

It doesn’t matter how disciplined you are, there will be times when your training doesn’t go to plan.

It will feel like you’re taking backward steps, regressing. We’ve all been there.

But it’s in these moments that it’s vital we don’t stop.

You might have to work around an injury. You might have a few sessions where you’re just spinning the wheels.

That’s fine. What matters is you keep going.

The injury will heal. You’ll get through the slump. And then you can turn it back up a notch.

Carry on, and years down the line you’ll forget this ever happened.

Stop, and you’ll wish you never did.

It means the friction that used to stop them going regularly is gone. Their potential just went up exponentially.

But when someone tells me they had a terrible day because they couldn’t make it to the gym — that might be worse than not going at all.

There’s a quote I heard once: “don’t turn your passion into your prison.” Couldn’t agree more.

One of the best things training can do is add to your life. Give you more flexibility, not less.

Training should give you freedom. Not take it away.

If your mental and physical health depend on sticking to a perfect schedule, you’re not just robbing yourself of enjoyment — you’re setting yourself up to fail.

Life gets in the way sometimes. That’s fine.

Your goal is just to stack up more good days than bad ones. Time does the rest.
