We are often asked, "Why do I need to wear a buoyancy aid? I'm an excellent swimmer," or "The water is shallow, so I don't need one."
The simple answer is that a buoyancy aid is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment you can wear when taking part in watersports.
A buoyancy aid helps keep you afloat if you fall into the water, giving you extra time and energy to get back onto your paddleboard, kayak, or canoe safely. Even strong swimmers can become tired, injured, or affected by cold water shock, making it much harder to stay afloat unaided.
A buoyancy aid can:
• Help keep your head above water.
• Reduce fatigue while swimming or waiting for assistance.
• Provide extra confidence, especially for less experienced paddlers.
• Offer useful pockets and attachment points for safety equipment.
• Improve visibility to other water users and rescuers.
• Help protect your upper body from knocks and bumps.
Conditions on the water can change quickly, and accidents can happen unexpectedly. Cold water, strong currents, wind, hidden obstacles, or a simple slip can affect anyone, regardless of their swimming ability or experience.
At EpicLife, we strongly recommend that all paddlers wear a buoyancy aid whenever they are on the water. It is a simple piece of equipment that can make a huge difference in an emergency and helps ensure everyone can enjoy their time on the water safely.
Just as importantly, your buoyancy aid needs to fit correctly. A poorly fitting buoyancy aid may not perform as intended when you need it most.
If you would like advice on choosing the right buoyancy aid, please do not hesitate to contact us. We stock a range of buoyancy aids at our Bodiam shop and online, and you are very welcome to come and try them on. We are always happy to help with fitting advice and finding the most suitable buoyancy aid for your paddling activities.
Stay safe and enjoy your time on the water. #
