The afternoon Bushcraft Group had their camp out on Saturday night; loads of food, fun games, great chat, nice weather and even the music was cool. Lovely that our oldest Saturday Group children managed to get the experience of sleeping in the wood in their own natural shelters. Well done!

There was a leaf theme going on with the Woodland Adventurers today. A game of leaf Guess Who made us look at the shape of leaves very carefully. We then used Wolf’s new leaf reliefs to make rubbings of nine of the trees in our enclosure before collecting fallen leaves to make a leaf caterpillar. We were so busy there was only a short time for adventuring, but still long enough to get very muddy!! (Tip for parents – bring a bin liner to sit your child in on the way home!)
With a historical theme, the Forest School Group made engraved slate pendants (inspired by the 10,000 year old one found at Star Carr and on display at The Yorkshire Museum.) They also had a look at Wolf's replica Ötzi artefacts. The Bushcraft Groups processed clay and made clay balls ready to make dorodangos next week, ands had a go at creating fire from an ember. Great work everyone.

The Woodland Adventurers started the new series by creating their own spring tonic drink! Having discovered the properties of the Velcro plant (Cleavers), they washed, cut, mashed, strained and then drank their green mixture before trying it again mixed with apple juice and then lemonade. Their votes showed that lemonade was by far the most popular! They also loved playing a game using the sticky w**d which involved stealthy walking and great control before adventuring independently in the forest. ‘I’ve missed the forest,’ said several – how wonderful to see them back, feeling calm, relaxed and happy! Meanwhile the Forest School Group faced an individual fire lighting challenge with success assessed by the successful burning of a 'tiki head' they had made. The Bushcraft group made broom handles - requested by our local school for their school play. Great work by everyone, and we all enjoyed being back in the forest.

What a great campout! The children of the morning Bushcraft group stayed overnight in the shelter camp they have been building over the last few weeks. The shelters proved waterproof in the rain and the central fire made them warm and cosy. We had pizzas cooked in the clay oven for tea and a yummy breakfast buffet. The children were brilliant and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of the wood at night.

The Woodland Adventurers rounded off their half term by decorating plant pots and planting sunflowers. They spent time recording in their journals what their plants would look like when fully grown and then completed a sunflower trail around the site. Their observational skills are improving tremendously! There was, as always, lots of adventuring time involving running around the forest and some interesting creations in the mud kitchen café and sand pit. The older groups played a widegame around the wide wood, collecting tokens from drop boxes on trees, avoiding detection, and solving a riddle. Great way to end yet another series of Saturday Forest School. See you all in 3 weeks.

We were delighted to host a lovely group from Alne this morning who had won the experience at the Friends of Alne School (FOAS) auction which was raising funds for the school. We had a brilliant session in the forest discovering its hidden natural wonders, lighting fires, making charcoal pencils and, of course, enjoying toasted marshmallows. We were pleased to be able to help the school especially as all the children enjoy several sessions with us each year, and thoroughly enjoyed today's session.

Spirits were undaunted despite the wet weather today! The Woodland Adventurers enjoyed a game using sticky w**d and stealthy walking before making woodland spirits out of clay. These spirits are guardians of the forest, encouraging nature to blossom and enticing the fairies back to their refurbished areas! Some great faces were made and some very muddy children returned to their parents! The Forest School Groups learnt how to use the axe; their task to make a peg and then personalise it. Great work. Meanwhile the bushcraft Groups used the rainy conditions to check their camp for leaks in preparation for their campout, and then learnt how to set up hammocks and stay dry in the rain.

Today the Woodland Adventurers were celebrating May Day by drawing some of the wild flowers at our site in our forest journals. Then in celebration of the festival of Beltane, we revisited our fire lighting skills, creating small fires that we could toast marshmallows on. Fire safety was discussed in depth and all the children worked sensibly and successfully.
The Forest School Group built an A-frame from poles which they used to 'walk' volunteers across the 'alligator pit'. They also used their compass skills to solve a word puzzle with letters on trees around the wood.
The Bushcraft Group had a go at the orienteering course, also using their compass skills, with some amazingly fast times around the route. Great work everyone.

Today was the perfect day for the Woodland Adventurers to start their new temperature and weather recording charts. We noticed that there was a 7 degree difference between the morning and afternoon sessions! After a game of ‘What’s the time Mrs Owl,’ the children worked hard to redecorate the fairy houses in the hopes that the fairies will move back in over the weekend. They also added ponds, pathways, sculptures and other interesting features and some of our little people were given new cloaks and crowns. The areas are looking fabulous and it is great to see the children taking great pride in making them look so good.

The Forest School Groups competed in their dice / fire lighting challenge and had great fun! And then learnt the square lashing. The Bushcraft Groups made great progress on their camp area; they can't wait to put it to use.
