We are a newly established lawn bowling Club following the merger of Tiverton Borough and Tiverton Park Bowling Clubs and is based at Tiverton Borough's old ground which is situated between The Avenue and the Grand Western Canal basin off Canal Hill Road. We are a newly formed Bowls Club following the merger of two of three historic Tiverton Bowling Clubs, Tiverton Borough and Tiverton Bowling (Park) with the former being the home for this new Club, Tiverton Canal. The idea of the merger came about when it was becoming clear that something needed to be done to avert the danger of the falling membership numbers for both Clubs in the not too distant future. With the new Club we believe we will have a much stronger foundation with renewed energy an impetus for what we strongly believe, will be a secure and successful future.

It was the last (Scheduled) week of the Exeter & District Men's Over 60s League, and whilst our White's and Blue's side had little to play for, our Navy side, in Division 2, were up against their nearest rivals, Madeira 'A' who, if they were to win, would sn**ch away the Division 2 title. Tiverton Canal Bowling Club 'Navy' had taken all 8 points away at Madeira a month or so sgo but this was a different day, a different green and, we believe, a different Madeira side and, sure enough, they started very well on both our rinks. It wasn't looking promising but John’s triple just managed to make some inroads as their match progressed, gaining a, somewhat, slender lead before a slice of luck gave them a '4', helping them on the way to a 22 - 13 win. Our other triple were under pressure but they managed close the deficit to just '2', finishing 12 - 14 down. This ensured we gained 6 points which was more than enough to claim the Division 2 Title πŸ† 😎

Our Ladies have been taking centre stage these last few days, and this morning they were back on the green, playing local friends and rivals, Tiverton West End in the WTL (Formerly the LTL). The first few ends suggested it was going to a very close affair but but as things drew nearer to the halfway stage, both Canal sides were edging ahead. Maggie Burnell (Skip), Barbara Goss and Margaret Gratton (Lead) began to really dominate thereafter, with a '7' putting them comfortably ahead, extinguishing much of TWE's early resilience and to propel themselves towards a 31 - 6 win. Brenda Tucker (Skip), Kay Leach and Clare Gutteridge (Lead) managed to keep ahead by 4 or 5 shots, and maintained the lead thanks to two or three decisive bowls from Brenda, coming in with a bit of weight and disrupting West Ends multiple holding shots. This enabled her side to eventualky come away with another excellent result, 19 - 9. So another 6 points to keep them in the hunt to challenge for Top spot with two matches remaining. See attached latest table. 😎

In the WTL, our ladies continued their good form, earlier this week, when they travelled to Ottery St Mary on Tuesday morning. Maggie Burnell, along with Barbara Goss and Lesley Finan winning 21-11, whilst Brenda Tucker, Kay Leach and Sara Kittow also winning, 19-14.
So all 6 points to Tiverton Canal πŸ™‚
This should keep them comfortably in second place with three more games to play.
Two teams go up to Division 1 but Chardstock do look to be the Champions elect, based on their apparent dominance, however, Canal will surely put them under a bit of pressure especially as they play each other in their last match, in early September.
Attached is the most recent league table which excludes this latest result.

Well, it's been another action packed week of bowls here at Tiverton Canal, firstly our unbadged triple of Phil Atkins, Dan Burt and Ian Sexton, continued their incredible form to literally blow their opponents from Exonia away (See attached photos), to reach the semi final v a team from Yelverton on the 13th Sept @ Culm Vale (10am) with the Final scheduled for 1.30pm on the same day.

In other news, as anticipated, it was a very very exciting, nail biting finish even, in the East of Exe League with three teams all vying for the title. Canal were just 1 point ahead of second placed Ottery and third placed Culm Vale. In the end, Canal came so agonisingly close, but a tally of 9 Points against Tiverton West End proved insufficient to get us across the line, as Ottery, who already had a better shot difference, gained 10 points in their last match v Honiton to go level on 99 Points but it was enough to win, with a +29 shots difference. Culm Vale also just missed out by shot difference as they too, picked up 10 points against Bradninch, to finish on 99 points. So disappointment for us at Tiverton Canal but really, it's been an exceptional campaign and it will surely hold us in good stead for the future. 😎

On Wednesday (20th August) Our Ladies Triples played Sidmouth Yellow at home in their WTL and came away with all 6 points with wins on both rinks, Margaret Gratton, Barbara Goss, Maggie Burnell 18 - 9, Sarah Kittow, Clare Gutteridge, Brenda Tucker, 17 - 14.

Meanwhile, also on Wednesday, in the Men's Over 60's, our Blue team, were away at Madeira, on a notoriously fast and tricky green. With continued changes, they more than surpassed themselves and came away with all 8 Points!
Kevin Lower (Skip), Kevin Finan, David Hussey 23 - 7 and Duncan Kittow (Skip) Pete Thornton, Barry Kerslake 20 - 17.
This should, in theory, ensure they keep their Division 4 status with just two matches left to play. So well done indeed!

In Division 2, our Navy side, who were currently on top, travelled to Ottery to play their 'Hawks' a strong side for sure so was likely to be tough. However, both triples managed to come away with wins to pick up another 8 Points.
Stewart Maddocks, Bob Pulsford, Tony Burgess 22 - 13 and John Gutteridge, Kevin Parkin, Dave Hoaen 18 - 12 .

This result, combined in the knowledge that third placed Ottery Buzzards, who were playing second placed Madeira, lost on both their home rinks, means that Tiverton Canal 'Navy' have sealed promotion to Division 1 for next season! Brilliant stuff!

Phew! What a week!

Last Sunday Tiverton Canal travelled to Taunton Vivary for a 'Friendly', on yet another hot afternoon. It was enjoyed by all, with the four Rinks (Triples) shared equally. Overall score 79 shots to 56 in Canal's favour. One the highlights was the "Scrummy" Tea that was laid on by the hosts at half time πŸ˜‹. Here are some photos of the afternoon, courtesy of Lesley Beer . . .

Well, here's the East of Exe table that everyone's been waiting for πŸ˜€ With just one week to go, we see it's a three horse race. Tiverton Canal just in front by a nostril 🐴, followed by both Ottery and Culm Vale who are neck and neck 🐎🐎.
Tiverton Canal have got Tiverton West End at home, Ottery have Honiton at home, whilst Culm Vale are away at Bradninch. Anything can happen in the final straight! 😎

It was another very busy week for our Club, in addition to the East of Exe, Men's Over 60s, Friendlies and numerous Club competitions, our Ladies continued their excellent form shown this season, in the Ladies Triples League on Thursday , with a strong performance at home v Ottery, winning on both of their rinks to pick up all 6 available points. 😎
Last evening, Sunday, Dan Burt (Lead) and Phil Atkins booked their place into the Semi Final of the Unbadged Pairs, with a dominant (home) performance against D. Shields and W. Taylor of Paignton. πŸ‘
Despite the end of season looming large, we still have much to play for! 😎
