I’m getting old, but in my youth there were dozens of local shows about, where you could start a young/novice horse/pony on the road to possibly greater things. They also provided those without lofty ambitions, a place to go and enjoy your best friend and possibly take home a rosette or two to acknowledge your joint effort and remember a good day. I remember taking a young, novice horse to a show, we only did the clear round (and got a rosette) and he ended up being placed at Badminton! (not with me🤣).
Nowadays, there are far fewer of those local, relaxed events. Places where even if you didn’t enter anything, or just did BTO for the experience of being in the ring, you could mooch them about and relax them into realising that a show is no big deal. Good for the riders too. When your nerves are heightened because you are going to compete, it transmits to your horse. Less so if you are just there for a wander about or a paddle in the river. The demise of the local show is possibly due to the increasing legislative requirements - who knew about the purple thingy - insurance requirements and general lack of support.
These events cost a lot in both financial terms and manpower. The volunteers are there to provide you with an enjoyable day out.
The reason for this long blurb is a plea for you to support your local shows. Unless you organise one yourself, you have no idea the obstacles that have to be negotiated just to be there. Shows cannot continue without support in terms of finances, and volunteers are not going to make the sort of effort required, just to make a loss.
As the phrase goes, use it or lose it……and if you’re thinking that this comes from us making a loss, in respect of purely entries, we did. It’s only thanks to the kindness and generosity of sponsors, that we wiped our face and are thinking about 2027.
My bad!!!! I forgot to say, an huge thank you to all who did support us. Spread the word. We want to give you the show that you want. Obviously, we are governed by certain restrictions but please, if there is something you would like to see and it’s not on the schedule, let me know. I promise it will be considered. It may not happen exactly as you suggest/want, but I will do my very best to include in some format!

Well, quite literally, the horse show gods shone down on us yesterday. They were kind enough to add in a breeze that ran down the Exe valley, making the sun bearable. There was ice cream! There was an abundance of burgers and bacon rolls. There was loads of space to mooch your horse about in. There was quite a bit of paddling in the river, and one exhibitor, quite literally going for a swim (didn’t expect to see a bikini clad body walking through the Working - then empty - ring on her way back to her lorry). There were HOYS/Dublin judges. There were stewards who officiate all over the country throughout the summer. There were fab rosettes from the Cornish Rosette Company. At the heart of it all, are the exhibitors. We try our best to give you a good day.
Here comes the flood gates bit…..ìf there are different classes you would like to see, please let me know. Hold my hand up - Ì missed a class Ì had intended to schedule. Circumstances forced a change in ring schedule ie what was where, and that will be addressed, but if there is anything which you felt we could improve on, let us know. If we don’t know, we won’t be able to do anything about it. Constructive comments are welcome.

It’s show day. All set up and waiting for you. I haven’t yet got a waft of bacon, but hopefully it won’t be long. Styles ice cream for later….and the obligatory paddle in the river

Morning all 😊. The rings are up - sorry meant to take a pic 🙈. There is good ground cover albeit not as green as all of us would have hoped for. BIG reminder - although we’ve got the river field where you can cool off, PLEASE bring sufficient water to hydrate/wash down. The water supply we had hoped for isn’t yet complete and the IBC’s Ì thought we had access to have been sold….so BRING YOUR OWN WATER. Thanks

Good afternoon 😊. For the last couple of years there have been representations from the world/foreign breed fraternity for us to schedule their classes. For 2026, they have been included however the response so far is disappointing. If you, or you know anybody, who wants to keep these classes going forward, they need support.

We’re up and running. Please have a look at the 2026 schedule. Lots of new classes:
Irish Draught, side saddle, world breeds, more Workers, junior rider, senior rider, combined age, natural fence clear round……as well as all the classes we had last year.
