Round No.16
The Sharks final match prior to the festive break was against Rolls Royce Red. A victory would see Sharks lead the table during the Christmas interval for the first time in history...
It was a match that nearly never happened. The Naver Park "magic key-holder and keeper of the floodlight" I.E. the caretaker bloke:- hadn't turned up.
The lads welcomed back the silky Allan “Hendy” Douglas to the squad for a cameo Christmas appearance. The smoothie last played for the side in the Cup day finale of last season. A regular contributor to the online Ganghut, he's kept up his involvement with the team via the web site. So on his return to Thurso for the Christmas holiday an appearance for Sharks was always a good possibility, and the players shortage ensured Hendy's Christmas wish came true!
For this match Sharks were without several players including FOUR midfielders: Daffy, GR, Dave McGillivray and Callum Munro. Other men missing included Graham Lowe, Rab Cannop and Gary Lowe.
With Hendy a recognized midfield wizard, he was penciled into the squad, along with a midfielder called MARK ????? whom Willie had brought along to make up numbers. Sadly, due to the way the game unfolded, Michael King and Bob never got a start.
Things eventually got underway around ten minutes to seven.
The match kicked off with a "light but heavy" Christmas snowfall - lit by the floodlights it was something special. Sadly the first half football was not! Rolls Royce Reds were working hard and Sharks spent the first period, while not under great pressure- mainly on the defensive.
With no recognized midfield anchorman on the field, the forced squad reshuffle seemed uncomfortable and uncreative, everyone was doing necessities but the craft was uninspiring. Sharks Willie Miller spent more time in defence than the oppositions goal and chances for Chris Sinclair were few and far between.
HALF TIME RR REDS 0 SHARKS 0
The second half got underway with Sharks making tactical changes.
Hendy took to the field along with trialist Mark.
Rolls Royce Red had a great chance when a killer though-ball saw their striker on route one to goal. Shark keeper Terrace raced outside his box like a madman and the front-man lost composure, hooking the ball well wide of the target. The Shark goalkeeper never touched the ball. In fact he had no real saves at all throughout the match.
With time ebbing away and the possibility of a draw, or worse still, a late goal for the opposition, the manager kept the stability of the side and made no further changes.
Ten minutes from time Willie Miller grabbed the crucial opener to give the Sharks the lead.

The boys weren't out of the woods just yet!
Rolls Royce Reds weren't about to give the game up easily. They left THREE players up front in an effort to sn**ch themselves the equalizer but, despite a flurry of pressure including several corners, "The Edward" wasn't coming.
Former Shark hero Bobby McRoberts deserves a mention in this contest. The now Rolls Royce Reds defender (who knows certain Shark players' weaknesses) got forward and sent several good high crosses into Sharks penalty box in an effort to "tempt Terrace" into a blunder. But Sharks defence was solid and midfielders like trialist Mark, made important headed clearances.
With the final minutes at hand Sharks produced the best passing move of the game from defence through midfield to attack, and it was Willie Miller with a corking top left corner finish, who sealed the game for the team.
FINAL SCORE
ROLLS ROYCE REDS 0 SHARKS 2
Quick Summary
Hendy did well in his return to the fray, holding the ball up superbly. He had a couple of good efforts at goal and but for some fine saves from the Reds goalkeeper, would surely have been on the score sheet.
Sharks missed their regular midfield men. They also have a striking dilemma - but not of the usual variety.
With two leading goal-scorers in the squad and only one in the striker role at any time, it's a problem. Neither deserve to play second fiddle.
Wishing Sharks players, management, fans and rivals Merry Christmas!
