Sharks faced Thurso Comm in a league champions winner-take-all match.

Some great performances in this game, especially Sharks hat-trick hero Graeme Robertson. The video is a little shaky and the cameraman missed some goals - but it was a fine effort and we're thankful for what we have.

20 Years ago today!

7:30pm.
Newly crowned champions, Sharks F.C have completed their final league match and head back into the dressing-room. A veritable bevvy of booze awaits them.
But their is a little disappointment in the camp- lack of concentration has caused the team to lose a match they were favourite to win. In their previous encounter they won by 4 clear goals...
The video cameraman never managed to capture any goals, and sadly he filmed nothing of the second half. This was due to high winds. It was a freezing cold night at Naver.

OUR 20TH AND FINAL LEAGUE GAME OF THE SEASON!
A win here and Sharks could boast going through the whole of the second half of the season unbeaten!
Wouldn't that be something?
Ach. No luck! It was 1-1 at half-time and we were well in the game. Me and Rab took to the field to add defensive bite. Sharks heart wasn't in it and ROLLS ROYCE BLUES took the game 4-3 with oor keeper Terrace raging!
In the changing rooms we drunk champagne and celebrated league victory. (Queen's We Are the Champions blaring out from somewhere)
SPLENDID!
The league is over and Sharks are in division 1.
Now I must decide if my legs can stand another season at the top...
Stay tuned!

Sharks faced Top Joes - but sadly there is no match report or video so there could even be a date-error or two. In fact DT believes the date of the ROUND is wrong because tomorrow is the date we have down for round 21 the penultimate games and Sharks have a free week!
Oh well. As long as the data adds up I guess. :-)

We do have THIS from the Captain's web site:

OUR NINETEENTH GAME OF THE SEASON!
No bitterness in the camp at all as the players came together to claim the three points that would WIN THE LEAGUE TITLE!
Our unfortunate opponents were TOP JOES.

Cannae get to a computer right now but just wanted to post that today the 31st of January is the 20th anniversary of Sharks competing in the FHM Cup!
The video tape containing the final recording was mysteriously "half-wiped over" some time after the event took place - all the footage from Glasgow was lost, except a few precious minutes added to our end-of season video tape.
Sharks were missing several star players who couldn't get the time off work. The event wason the Monday if memory serves.

The team took the train down and stayed overnight.
Our lads were involved in the opening game and got off to a winning start. The competition was fierce and we did well to qualify for the next stage, eventually going out in the quarter-finals.

Great memories. Among the best was Graeme Robertson's keepy-up display at a railway station on the journey home. That video thankfully still exists!

On a personal level I had one of my best saves during the teams 2nd match - but the cameraman was too busy zooming in on an FHM model's ar*e. Naughty boy.

We had many local business people sponsor this event. Sorry that I can't list them at the mo.

Happy FHM Cup day. 🥳

20 years ago today - an important victory for Sharks F.C as they edge their way closer to a first-ever league title.
Sharks grabbed four goals - one of them from Steele Smith.

Sadly we have no video or match report. :-(

20/01/2025

So, much to my surprise, 20 years ago today there was no Caithness 7s football.
The night appears to have been canceled. No idea why.
Most likely it was the weather?

We have no video for that game, the legendary return match against Shadwell Town - DT is convinced we DID have video but apparently not.
Does anybody remember this night? Was their video? Did you play?

Round 19 continues next week, on the 27th of January.

20 years ago today and Sharks once again squared off against Dynamo TJ's - the team who beat them 4-1 back in October.

Dynamo came out fighting - but the first half remained goal-less.

It was Sharks who opened the scoring when Graeme Robertson drilled the ball home from outside the box. Sadly missed by the camera-man.

Dynamo equalized but Willie Miller soon broke their hearts when he grabbed his 18th goal of the season- a fine turn and shot from close quarters.

Adrian Forbes sealed victory with the best goal of the day.

If Sharks league title campaign was to continue then this was a match they had to win.
Would the turkey and booze cost them dearly in this quest?

It was raining heavily as the teams took to the field. Shark sub Gigi Lowe had sportingly agreed to do a stint with the camera as long as it wouldn't affect his chance of getting a game. Sadly, the wily midfielder didn't use the towel though to keep the machine dry and it soon broke down due to damp.

SO NO GOALS ON VIDEO.

The game was refereed by 7s committee hero, IAN NICOL who did a good job in our humblest of humbles. It rained heavily throughout the match and, come to think of it, most of that night as well.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS.
1 Minutes 30
Shark strike force link up well - in their own Penalty Box! Willie at the front post makes a powerful headed clearance out of the box. Chris Sinclair win another header and glances the ball to the side where Daffy wins a tackle to get his mitts on it. Kris Smith bursts forward with Willie alongside him. The backpost low cross finds Chris Sinclair who just fails to make contact....

10 Minutes
Sharks first substitute is the cameraman as Graham Lowe passes duties to "up on his holidays" Gavin Mowat. Gavin has pledged himself as a future player. The rain has been teeming down and Gavin sensibly puts a towel over the camera to protect it. Sadly though (as it turns out soon) the damage has already been done!

The Penguins have switched strikers on the park and the new man manages to shield the ball from Kris Smith just a few feet away from goal. A clever turn sees a cheeky shot sneaking past the terminator but Terrace is awake and down smart-ish to scrape the ball to safety.

Sharks get caught out as a Penguin break sees the entire team caught out apart from Kris Smith. Antarctic have two men through. Terrace reads the situation well and comes bolting off his line too see the ball right-footed to safety. A similar ball later in the contest would cost Sharks dearly.

Who says Chris Sinclair doesn't work hard enough?
Here, he's grafting like a champion as he wins a tackle out of nothing, setting up Kris Smith who bursts forward and cracks a long shot that has the keeper bedazzled - but sadly for Sharks it cracks off the post! Unlucky!

Sharks grab two goals both similar in style and both corkers!
Low drives from outside the box for Kris Smith and Daffy - well done men sorry there is no video! The Camera flips out and the lads don't know how to fix it.

HALF TIME - Penguin 0 Sharks 2

The second half sees more of the same.
Darren is off the field and Michael King takes over, and Adrian and Rab get brought into the play. Only Graham Lowe fails to get a run-out.

Sharks go 3-0 up when Kris Smith gets his second.

In the last stage of the match the boys lose their shape and a clever through-ball sees Penguin golden boot Andy Taylor start a penguin comeback. And comeback they do... scoring a second then third as Sharks lose the plot.

It is now 3-3 with only a couple of minutes remaining.
Sharks are on the verge of losing their number 1 spot in the division. On the other side of the park Shadwell are winning their contest. A win for Sharks is vital.

Then Sharks get a lucky break (and despite being top of the league that hasn't been the case much this season) when a good spell of pressure sees an Antarctic player deflects the ball into his own net!
ANTARCTIC THISTLE 3 SHARKS 4.

Ian Nicol blows the final whistle. The stand-in referee has had a great game. Sharks have nicked a match they were winning comfortably until that last ten minutes.

FINAL SCORE
ANTARCTIC THISTLE 3 SHARKS 4

Sharks goals came from Kris Smith 2, Daffy 1 and the own goal.

Quick Summary
Sharks got cocky towards the end of the game and underestimated the opposition. In the final seconds when they HAD the leading goal they displayed poor strategy. The good news is the after-match discussion should have put paid to future misery and at the end of the day they won. But this is a different Shark side from last year. The level of seriousness has clearly tripled.

Round No.16

The Sharks final match prior to the festive break was against Rolls Royce Red. A victory would see Sharks lead the table during the Christmas interval for the first time in history...

It was a match that nearly never happened. The Naver Park "magic key-holder and keeper of the floodlight" I.E. the caretaker bloke:- hadn't turned up.

The lads welcomed back the silky Allan “Hendy” Douglas to the squad for a cameo Christmas appearance. The smoothie last played for the side in the Cup day finale of last season. A regular contributor to the online Ganghut, he's kept up his involvement with the team via the web site. So on his return to Thurso for the Christmas holiday an appearance for Sharks was always a good possibility, and the players shortage ensured Hendy's Christmas wish came true!

For this match Sharks were without several players including FOUR midfielders: Daffy, GR, Dave McGillivray and Callum Munro. Other men missing included Graham Lowe, Rab Cannop and Gary Lowe.

With Hendy a recognized midfield wizard, he was penciled into the squad, along with a midfielder called MARK ????? whom Willie had brought along to make up numbers. Sadly, due to the way the game unfolded, Michael King and Bob never got a start.

Things eventually got underway around ten minutes to seven.
The match kicked off with a "light but heavy" Christmas snowfall - lit by the floodlights it was something special. Sadly the first half football was not! Rolls Royce Reds were working hard and Sharks spent the first period, while not under great pressure- mainly on the defensive.

With no recognized midfield anchorman on the field, the forced squad reshuffle seemed uncomfortable and uncreative, everyone was doing necessities but the craft was uninspiring. Sharks Willie Miller spent more time in defence than the oppositions goal and chances for Chris Sinclair were few and far between.

HALF TIME RR REDS 0 SHARKS 0

The second half got underway with Sharks making tactical changes.
Hendy took to the field along with trialist Mark.

Rolls Royce Red had a great chance when a killer though-ball saw their striker on route one to goal. Shark keeper Terrace raced outside his box like a madman and the front-man lost composure, hooking the ball well wide of the target. The Shark goalkeeper never touched the ball. In fact he had no real saves at all throughout the match.
With time ebbing away and the possibility of a draw, or worse still, a late goal for the opposition, the manager kept the stability of the side and made no further changes.

Ten minutes from time Willie Miller grabbed the crucial opener to give the Sharks the lead.
RR REDS 0 SHARKS 1

The boys weren't out of the woods just yet!
Rolls Royce Reds weren't about to give the game up easily. They left THREE players up front in an effort to sn**ch themselves the equalizer but, despite a flurry of pressure including several corners, "The Edward" wasn't coming.

Former Shark hero Bobby McRoberts deserves a mention in this contest. The now Rolls Royce Reds defender (who knows certain Shark players' weaknesses) got forward and sent several good high crosses into Sharks penalty box in an effort to "tempt Terrace" into a blunder. But Sharks defence was solid and midfielders like trialist Mark, made important headed clearances.

With the final minutes at hand Sharks produced the best passing move of the game from defence through midfield to attack, and it was Willie Miller with a corking top left corner finish, who sealed the game for the team.

FINAL SCORE
ROLLS ROYCE REDS 0 SHARKS 2

Quick Summary
Hendy did well in his return to the fray, holding the ball up superbly. He had a couple of good efforts at goal and but for some fine saves from the Reds goalkeeper, would surely have been on the score sheet.
Sharks missed their regular midfield men. They also have a striking dilemma - but not of the usual variety.
With two leading goal-scorers in the squad and only one in the striker role at any time, it's a problem. Neither deserve to play second fiddle.

Wishing Sharks players, management, fans and rivals Merry Christmas!

Top of the table against the bottom and with Sharks the ones sitting at the top still seems a little "Alice in Wonderland" - but that was the situation going into this round fifteen game. Sharks in first place with 26 points - Seaview at the bottom on 4.

The Caithness 7s stormiest evening of the year saw gusting winds that proved too much for the volunteer cameramen. Veteran Graham Lowe announced he'd be unable to do his stint as he had no gloves- but when the video bag was opened to reveal a pair of thermals, the former player/manager/captain made his excuses and ran...!

Sharks were missing Graeme Robertson, Dave McGillivray, Steve "Bob" Bremner and Gary Lowe.

Lets take stock of the goals...

Daffy opens the scoring.
The veteran midfielder finds himself out on the right-hand side some twenty yards from goal, he gets his body over the ball and whacks it! The ball (despite the wind) stays low and true - leaving the keeper with no chance.
SHARKS 1 SEAVIEW 0

Darren Smith and Kris Smith (Sharks defensive pairing) are taking every opportunity to lend themselves to the attack.
As the pressure mounts on the Seaview defence, the ball falls once again to "The Colonel" GA-Daffy. His well struck shot takes a wicked deflection to nab another goal for the lads.
SHARKS 2 SEAVIEW 0

The third goal always looked likeliest to be for Sharks and it is Willie Miller who gets the faintest of touches (off his napper) to send the ball into the net off a long shot from Kris Smith.
SHARKS 3 SEAVIEW 0

HALF TIME SHARKS 3 SEAVIEW 0

The second half gets underway with Chris Sinclair looking hungry.
Adrian Forbes and Michael King are also be heavily involved and they would later be joined by Rab Cannop and Graham Lowe - ensuring every one of the 12 man squad sees action on the field at some point during the match.

Sharks grab another goal and effectively end the contest when Daffy completes his hat-trick.
Well done Colonel!
SHARKS 4 SEAVIEW 0

Striker Chris Sinclair's determination pays off when he finds himself running through on goal with only the keeper to beat. His initial first touch control makes it look easy - despite difficult weather conditions.
SHARKS 5 SEAVIEW 0

Shark keeper Terrace and Defender Kris Smith have "a bit of a disagreement" as Seaview produce their best chance of the contest: However, the duo put their differences behind them. Moments later goalkeeper Terrace does well when he gets a hand to a well-placed lofted shot, tipping the ball wide to safety.

The final goal of the evening is the supporters favourite!
It comes from the hardworking Rab Cannop:- whom, through determination and sheer perseverance- finds himself bundling the ball over the line, off his nose or chest or something! His first goal for the team will remain memorable.

FINAL SCORE
SHARKS 6 SEAVIEW 0

Quick Summary
Hats off to referee Bob Wheatcroft for braving the elements and allowing the football to go ahead.
Conditions were appalling:- But at least the fixtures are out of the way! Sharks go away satisfied with their penultimate performance of 2004.

Next up: Rolls Royce Reds!

Round 14 - Ashes v Sharks

Twenty years ago today saw Sharks return match against Ashes!
For the first-time in the teams history we were above them in the table. We were no longer expecting to lose - we were a far cry from the side that lost to them a few years previous in our BBC televised cup game.
Earlier in the season it has been a 1-1 draw. Could Sharks finally get the better of their arch-rivals?

League Match No.14

Veterans of the team would note that this was the first time we'd met Alan Tait and Peter McGregor on the same park as us since 1994. The duo were once the spearhead of our Ormlie Motors squad and between them they netted nearly 100 goals in a single season. Both looked well up for the game.

Some Match Highlights

1 Minute
A quick Shark kick-in is played back to Willie Miller in a defensive position.
Ashes striker Alan Tait charges him down but Willie lofts a lovely ball over the attackers towards Chris Sinclair who's making a run across the face of the Ashes defence. Chris latches onto the ball and drills it low past the keeper. A perfect start for the Sharks!
SHARKS 1 ASHES 0

2 Minutes
Calamity Sharks.
Ashes player steps past Chris Sinclair and runs the length of the field. Chris doesn't reach him and the resulting low cross thankfully beats everybody and ends up on the other side of play midway inside Sharks half. It's a 50-50 for Kris Smith. And who better? But alas he ends up being sidestepped. The cross comes in and there's nobody marking danger man Alan Tait. He's closed down but hits a shot from the tightest of angles past the defenders legs leaving the keeper unsighted. It's in the bottom corner.
SHARKS 1 ASHES 1

11 Minutes
Sharks have a free kick around 30 yards from goal.
Willie Miller strikes it sweetly - cameraman Daffy cannae follow it - but its in the net nonetheless.
Ya stoater!
SHARKS 2 ASHES 1

12 Minutes 30
Ashes keeper Malcolm Ness hurt his back in the previous incident. Here he gets the ball back into play following a short delay. Its a high ball up the middle - and Callum doesn't get the header in. He goes in for the recovery but a one-two leaves him no chance and Alan Tait comes away with the ball out wide - and he's totally unmarked. Tait heads towards the near-post and Sharks scurry to cover. The driven ball across the box is finished off in style by Sharks own Willie Miller!
SHARKS 2 ASHES 2

22 Minutes 10
Two key players, two key mistakes and Ashes take the lead for the first time. The goal is scored by a new lad the Ashes drafted in at short notice.
SHARKS 2 ASHES 3

HALF TIME ASHES 3 SHARKS 2

1 Minute
Cameraman Daffy misses the next goal but this wasn't his fault - he had a problem with the camera and is complaining the tape is running out.
SHARKS 3 ASHES 3

5 Minutes
Adrian Forbes shows his ability.
Here he receives the ball chest high and brings it down superbly before half-vollying it from distance.
SHARKS 4 ASHES 3

The remainder of the game saw Rab Cannop enter the field. Sharks conceded another equalizer and the game went back and forth. Graham Lowe went home before the end. Several chances at the end of the game mean Sharks may claim they should have nicked it.
But Ashes had equally good chances so a draw is a fair result..

FINAL SCORE
ASHES 4 SHARKS 4

Quick Summary
It may have been the one we wanted to win just a little too badly.
Several players didn't have their best night and we paid the price on several occasions. Still, we were without two of our most influential players and the midfield was always going to be difficult to fill.
All in all a draw really does seem a fair enough result.

Sharks played their second match against Halkirk and it was a tough and physical game- but should two men have walked???

First up a quick thank-you to Steve "Bob" Bremner and Shark supporter David "Rambo" Macallister for having a go with the video camera.

Some match highlights.

It's all cries of "get stuck in" and "hard in" from the Halkirk touchline. In previous years Sharks would have been all-too easily intimidated into submission. But this is a stronger more mature Shark outfit - and they are getting used to winning..

10 Minutes 20
A crunching tackle sees GR come away with the ball. He's determined to go on and beat another man but a fine tackle from the defender says otherwise. It's Sharks fifth corner of the game and its a great back-post ball. Daffy attacks the ball on the run, getting up in the air and reaching over the defender to get his napper onto the ball. The veteran bundles the defender to the ground having just failed to make contact. The Halkirk man is up quick as Daf the warrior falls to the Astroturf.
What happened next remains a bit of a mystery, but it would appear the ref spotted a deliberate kick at the Colonel. Daffy gets booked but the Halkirk lad is sent off!
Neither had shown any sign of aggression (that we can detect) and it seems both were just going for the ball. Sharks players didn't know what to make of it never mind the Halkirk men.
Bob must have better vision than most of us!

The next few minutes sees Halkirk up the ante' - you'd think it was Sharks who were a man down as the village outfit hold on to possession and mount several dangerous attacks - all they lack is a final ball - Sharks defence holds out.

19 Minutes - Shark keeper Terrace has his first real save, a parry at the near post to see the ball to safety. It gives Halkirk their third corner of the half. Keeper DT comes and claims it, launching a quick attack via Graham Robertson who plays a trademark long ball to pick out a fine run by Willie Miller. The Shark player of the year finds himself with only the keeper to beat and fires it home.
SHARKS 1 HALKIRK 0

21 Minutes
Kris Smith isn't in the best of moods.
He's certainly been "in the wars" and has a mouth full of blood to show as evidence. The Shark defender comes to the sidelines to get himself some water.

23 Minutes 30
A great double save from the Halkirk keeper - the first a long shot well parried and the second on the follow up by Adrian.

HALF TIME SHARKS 1 HALKIRK 0

Sharks aren't happy with their first half performance. The consensus is that they have failed to take advantage of the extra man. The second period sees striker Chris Sinclair brought into the action. The Shark hit-man has been working on his match fitness and is looking sharper from the outset.

1 minutes 50
Kris commits a foul and this time he's yellow carded.
No complaints from the terminator. But he has the last laugh when the free kick breaks to him. He runs forward and wins a tough 50-50 on his way towards goal. He has Chris Sinclair in support.
It's another goal for Sharks.
But who scored it? Kris Smith with the shot or Chris Sinclair with the final touch?
SHARKS 2 HALKIRK 0

8 Minutes
GR makes for another long pass but slices the ball across the centre circle. Daffy goes for it in a 50-50 but fails to make contact. Referee Bob Wheatcroft balances the teams to six men each - Daffy has just got his jotters!

14 Minutes - Terrace makes a save and plays the traditional high ball up the field that striker Willie thrives on. But this time its Chris Sinclair waiting. He lets the ball bounce and chases down the defender, getting a vital touch to steal possession. The resulting left foot half volley is unstoppable.
At last - Sharks have a goal scored on equal terms with six men in each side and deserve to lead the game.
SHARKS 3 HALKIRK 0

14 Minutes 32
Graeme Robertson comes off for a break.
Its been a tough physical game for the Sharks playmaker and he's been in the wars. But he's had a superb performance, particularly in the second period..
Willie Miller is unleashed again to replace him.

17 Minutes
Chris comes off for a break. The striker has proven he's back to his best. Graham Lowe makes his appearance as Striker.

23 Minutes
A frustrated Callum kicks the ball away in disgust following a decision and finds himself being yellow carded. It's been a difficult game for referee Bob Wheatcroft.

23 Minutes 50
Great saving tackle from Darren Smith who's once again been immense this week.
Halkirk are having another good spell of pressure as they push for a goal.
The full time whistle sounds soon afterwards.

FINAL SCORE
SHARKS 3 HALKIRK 0

Quick Summary
Halkirk are physical team but they may well have been unlucky to have a man sent off and so too the Sharks. This was a competitive game with tough tackling from both sides. The referee had a tough time but the original sending off set a bad tone for the game. The second half saw both teams playing six-a-side and from a neutral perspective must have been quite watchable as it was end to end stuff.
Sharks remain at the top of the table.
