You’ll come for the yoga and leave with so much more!

After the privilege of spending a few days with Fr Joe Pereira from and learning about the work they do with AA, but also with the families, I was struck by these words from , reported today in . In a video on Thursday about how people can support people in “early recovery”, Biden suggested seeking out Al-Anon resources. In a moment that humanized his former president father, he added: “The other thing that I can say is this, is that the one thing I know – that I don’t believe is true – is that you just have to let them hit rock bottom. You know I always say to people that the people that I know who hit bottom are either dead or in jail. And the one thing that I know helped save me is that my dad never stopped reaching out, never let go.

“And just the realization, the knowledge that there was always someone up there with a lantern shining a light down, reaching a hand down into the hell that I had put myself into gave me the strength to make the long climb out. So what I would say is never give up on them, and just keep loving them.” The image is a painting Hunter did of one of his heroes from the Civil Rights movement, the Rev. James Zwerg, circa 1961. Such courage.

Stepping outside our prejudice takes work. But first we have to believe it’s possible. And the good news? It is!

We practice so that the practice becomes effortless. Wonderful words. ❤️

"Practising asana is not a mechanical activity. Each pose is practiced with intent, awareness and accuracy. Practice brings effortlessness to the pose so that in due course, the body comes to rest in the pose with ease. Along with the body, the mind and intelligence also become stable in the pose. However, this state is experienced much later. In the beginning, asana practice is often considered as a physical workout or as body contortions. Needless to say, yogasana-s are far superior to other types of exercise. Not only do they move muscle mass, but they also exercise the internal organs and the endocrine glands. This effect, especially on the endocrine glands, is inherent only in yogasana-s. The objective of yogasana-s is not to merely strengthen the body but also to bring steadiness to it. Daily practice of asana-s bestows health, loosens the body, and pacifies the mind. It brings stability, balance and discipline to the practitioner's life. A yogi does not deride the body, nor does he obsess over his physique. To the yogi, the body is on par with the mind and intelligence and most importantly, it is a vehicle for the soul."

A retreat at with Fr Joe Pereira seems a long way from the troubles facing our friends in , their families, friends and neighbours. Patanjali’s first yama, ahimsa — non-harming — asks us not only to avoid causing harm ourselves, but to stand against it when we see it. Thinking of you and wishing you courage in the face of harm, and strength in the unity you find with each other .

It’s standing pose week in Iyengar yoga. At this year’s Convention, Birjoo spoke about the Golgi Tendon Organs and their role in proprioception — the body’s ability to sense its own position and movement. During sleep, these receptors go quiet. Muscle tone drops, sensory sampling reduces, and we wake up with degraded positional accuracy. (The tendency to stumble in the morning is the result.)

The instinctive response — in humans and animals alike — is a full-body stretch. It reactivates the receptors, reloads the tension-position data, and restores the nervous system’s map of the body in space.

Standing poses do the same thing: Tadasana, Trikonasana — working from the ground up, re-establishing proprioceptive accuracy joint by joint before the body is asked to take on more demanding or subtle work. The precision required in foot placement, knee alignment and weight distribution is what drives that process. It’s not incidental to the poses. It’s the point of them.

Starting the month with standing poses isn’t just tradition. It’s recalibration. 🧘

Finding and releasing the grip takes time. When you’ve taken that time, then double it. Stay with the release until it becomes the new normal.

Through supported yoga, we learn to release tension, quiet the mind, and meet ourselves with patience instead of force.

What helps you soften and let go?
