At Thornbury Dragon Tang Soo Do, we know that learning a new skill can be daunting. This is why we have worked hard over the past 19 years to establish a club that is welcoming, ego-free and dedicated to teaching quality Martial Arts to anyone who would benefit, whether they be 6, 60 or beyond (yes really, we have students of all ages!). As well as learning punching, kicking and physical self-defe

nce skills, we help our students develop in ways that apply to every area of life such as increasing self-awareness, mental agility and confidence. As instructors (and mother and daughter), we share over 40 years of knowledge and experience between us, and as a not-for-profit class we teach for the love of it, recognising how now, more than any other time, we can all benefit with more of what practicing traditional Martial arts has to offer. We are always happy to have a friendly and honest chat about whether Dragon Tang Soo Do is the right Martial Arts choice for you and/or your child (yes, you can train together- how do you think we got started?!) So please feel free to get in touch.

β˜―πŸ… Happy Chinese New Year!β˜―πŸ…
..πŸ₯‹Okay so whilst Tang Soo Do is in fact a Korean style, most Martial Arts can be traced back in some form to China so why not celebrate!πŸ₯‹...

πŸ…STRONG, POWERFUL, COURAGEOUS & INDEPENDANTπŸ… Those are all qualities we love to encourage at our classes. Lets hope the year of the tiger helps us refine those qualities! πŸ’ͺ

Everybody has to start somewhere!...

This painfully shy, sensitive, unathletic 8 year old was me (the Instructor of Thornbury DTSD) some 20+ years ago!

And somehow it is often those of us who seem the mildest, the quietest, the 'weakest', who are most drawn to Martial Arts. Despite how we appear or what we are told about ourselves, we know deep down we are capable of great strength, both internally and externally. Sadly, unless we 'fit' a certain mold, we're not always given the space or time to explore it in our daily lives. But through Martial Arts training, we begin to confront and unravel some of these inherited beliefs that have been limiting us. Through Martial Arts our 'mildness' becomes the ability to balance our aggression. Our 'quietness' becomes our ability to be focused and humble. Our 'weakness' turns into strength of many forms.

I've experienced (and continue to experience) this constant challenging and transforming of my beliefs, and I see it in our students all the time. It's one of the main reasons I continue to train in Tang Soo Do. It IS the main reason I teach it. I'm one lucky lady to have found it!

Radio silence from us for a while... but we're still up, running- and kicking (!)

Due to some extensive work taking place within Christ The King Primary School currently, we've been training in the play ground... Maybe you've been lucky enough to see (or hear!) us on your evening walk?

The weather has been kind mostly but one occasion we all got rather wet...

Training in the rain was a bit of a first for me, so I had to make the most of it!

Upon doing my best to iron this uniform earlier, I realised this pandemic has been the longest stretch without wearing this uniform in almost 23 years! Time flies when you do Tang Soo! πŸ‘ŠπŸ₯‹β€

πŸ’°πŸ₯‹WHAT DO WE COST? πŸ’°πŸ₯‹

We understand money and cost is often a factor in chosing a new hobby or class to take, especially following a global pandemic! We do our best always to offer value for money Martial Arts classes and gradings.

We like to be as transparent about our charges as possible, so here they are:

πŸ’°First lesson- FREE
πŸ’°Each lesson thereafter Β£5 (pay as you go)
πŸ’°When you're ready, buy your own plain martial arts suit and equipment from any martial arts shop or online supplier, or see if one of our students can give you some second hand- no expensive branded suits or equipment required.
πŸ’°Membership to the DTSD Association (only after a few lessons and you are happy you know you want to continue), Β£25 which covers the association badge, manual and all your years of membership up to your Black Belt.
πŸ’°Colour belt grading fees- Β£20 (take place 3 times a year and are mixed adults and children- everyone grades at the same time and is asked to perform the same content from the syllabus.)

And that's it. Other than optional competitions and seminars which are also reasonably priced, there is very little else you will ever need to pay towards your Martial Arts training with us. Happy days!

πŸ’ͺπŸ₯‹βœŒπŸ’‹β€ Happy International Women's Day! (well, for yesterday!)πŸ’ͺπŸ₯‹βœŒπŸ’‹β€

We love celebrating and encouraging kick-ass women at Thornbury DTSD, one might even say it is our speciality, with a class that consists mostly of women (and girls) taught by women!

For the men in our ranks (and lives) who support us and teach us, we are deeply grateful for the maturity, respect and 'target practice' they provide us with!
..Yin (feminine) and Yang (masculine) in perfect harmony... That's the Martial Artist's dream!

πŸ’ͺ✌πŸ₯‹πŸ’‹ A woman and a Martial ArtistπŸ’ͺπŸ₯‹βœŒπŸ’‹
..Mothers. Grandmothers. Sisters. Daughters. Nieces. Aunties. Godmothers. Size 6. Size 16. Age 7. Aged 67...
...................They are ALL Martial Artists........................

If you are a woman who is intrigued about starting a Martial Art but who feels a little daunted or intimidated we are only too pleased to put your mind at ease and answer your questions as sincerely as possible.

Let's get as many women as possible to feel their strength and confidence through Martial Arts :)

πŸ‰πŸ₯‹πŸŽ‰2021 is here- and so are we; sending you all the encouragement and motivational vibes to make your goals a reality this year (because we all need a win!)πŸŽ‰πŸ₯‹πŸŽ‰

It's curious to think what this year holds in store for us... the martial arts calender is certainly different to anything we've dealt with before- but that is forcing us to put into practice 2 key skills of a martial artist- focus and flexibility! And pheww, aren't we glad we've had these life skills over the past 12 months!

πŸ₯‹πŸ‰πŸ₯‹πŸ‰πŸ₯‹πŸ‰What are we up to?πŸ₯‹πŸ‰πŸ₯‹πŸ‰πŸ₯‹πŸ‰πŸ₯‹

Whilst we're back training on Zoom for the foreseeable, we are focused on our goals for this year, whether they be to achieve our next grade, increase our health and fitness or to become more mindful and balanced.

Even with the restrictions, we know we can make progress towards these goals every week (or every day), and use our flexibility to adapt when we need to.

We're also commited to celebrating each step of the process rather than just the resulting success, because that's what keeps up the momentum- and helps us feel better about ourselves too :)

And to top it all, we're lucky to be able to share these goals and successes as a club, forever sponsoring eachother in the dedicated way we always have, because celebrating your wins is always better with company πŸŽ‰

No matter what journeys 2021 takes us on, we will be here kicking, punching and sweating our way to our goals πŸ’ͺ And we hope everyone can find a way to get their win this year too :)
