Last Sunday we held our second Colour Belt Grading of the year, with almost 50 students stepping onto the mats to take their next grade… and they absolutely smashed it! 🔥🥋

From Red Belt all the way through to 1st Kyu, every student gave 100%, demonstrating the hard work, commitment and determination they’ve put into their training.

A huge congratulations to everyone who graded. You should all be incredibly proud of what you achieved.

A massive thank you also goes to our grading team for giving up their Sunday and helping the day run so smoothly. Evie, Andy, Dave, Will and Laura, your support and dedication to our students is greatly appreciated.

We couldn’t do it without you all.

🥋 COMPETITION DAY 🥋

A massive well done to everyone who represented Verve Martial Arts today at the Peterborough Championship Series 👏

We went up against some very experienced fighters, kata competitors and strong teams from across the country.

Every time you step onto the mats against tough opposition, you’re gaining experience, learning lessons and becoming a better martial artist. Sometimes the medals come, sometimes they don’t, but the growth is always there if you’re willing to look for it.

Only Kacper’s second time competing in both kata and points fighting. He performed brilliantly in kata, drawing on points and having to perform a second time. In points fighting it didn’t quite go our way, but he’s improving every single time he steps on the mats.

A really strong performance against a tough fighter from a very strong team. A close match and a great effort throughout.

Alyssa faced two very strong opponents today. Despite the results not going our way, she showed great determination and kept battling right to the end.

Points Fighting

Layla continues to improve with every tournament she enters. A really strong performance today, losing by just a single point to the eventual category winner.

🥋 Summer
🥉 Light Continuous

A tough category with some strong opposition. After losing her first fight to the eventual winner of the division, Summer bounced back to win her second fight and secure a bronze medal.

The points fighting might not of gone our way today but we will always shout out our team for having the determination to turn up compete and grow.

A huge thank you to Andy for coaching the team today and being in everyone’s corner throughout the event. It means a lot and we couldn’t do it without you 👊

Although Gabriela has only been training with us for a couple of months, she has taken to martial arts like an absolute natural. Her attitude towards training has been outstanding and she is always keen to get stuck in and learn. Her commitment to attending classes and improving her skills has been brilliant to see 🔥

Ok… the final Meet the Team post is me 😅

I started VMA Thetford back in 2018 with just 3 students training in one of the squash courts at Breckland Leisure Centre. At the time I had absolutely no idea it would grow into what we have today.

Seeing the dojo filled with students, families and an incredible team of instructors is something I’ll never stop being proud of.

Over the years I’ve studied and trained in a variety of martial arts, but Wado Ryu was the style that instantly clicked with me. The movement, timing and practicality of it all gave me a real passion for traditional karate and that passion has only grown stronger over the years.

Meet Andy 🥋
Andy has been part of the Verve family since 2018 and is quite literally one of the backbones of the school. Always at the dojo, always helping others, and somehow seemingly present at every event and competition going 😅

A 2nd Degree Blackbelt with a serious amount of experience, Andy is also a keen competitor with local, national and World Games titles to his name 🏆

Whether he’s coaching classes on Wednesdays & Fridays, cornering students at competitions, or giving up his own time to support the team, Andy is someone both students and instructors can always rely on.

Master John Swift 7th degree Blackbelt
Training since 1991, giving him over 35 years of martial arts experience.

Master Swift has dedicated decades to teaching, developing students and building the Verve Martial Arts network into what it is today. From tournaments and seminars to practical self defence and mindset development, his influence reaches far beyond just kicks and punches.

Over the last 10 years his focus has shifted more toward the practical application of martial arts, alongside physical and mental conditioning. As he puts it:

👉 “Both the mind and body are very different to when I started… but the journey continues in so many wonderful ways.”

🥋 Favourite thing to train?👉 “All aspects of martial arts, particularly the fact it brings enjoyment to so many.”

🥋 Signature move?👉 “It used to be the 360 tornado kick… see all the board breaks 😅These days it’s more about practicality, so I enjoy anything that works 😉”

Whether he’s teaching, grading, corner coaching at competitions or delivering amazing Seminars Master Swift continues to be the driving force behind the Verve Network & his own schools.

Meet Dave 👊

Training in martial arts since the age of 8… giving him more years of experience than he would probably care to admit 😅

Dave has supported Verve Martial Arts Thetford since our very first class and has been a huge part of the journey ever since. Whether it’s offering support at competitions, helping behind the scenes, giving technical advice or serving as one of our grading examiners, Dave has always been there when needed.

Known for his sharp eye during gradings, technical knowledge and ability to spot the one student trying to sneak a lazy stance from across the dojo 👀🥋

Sometimes the voice of reason…
Other times the voice of completely unasked-for sarcasm 😂
