Thame bridge Club has been reopened now since March and we have settled well into our new premises at the Chinnor rugby club. Numbers have gradually climbed and we regularly welcome five or six tables of players each week.

Anybody who would like to join us would be made very welcome. Please give us a ring if you would like to come along and we will try to help you to find a partner if you haven’t already got one.

Do please note that our start time is 7 o’clock. This is a little bit earlier than a lot of Bridge Clubs so it’s worth noting.

Please look at our website for details about the club and about learning opportunities in the area if you are thinking to start playing bridge.

We had five playing tables on Monday evening this week. At least 10 people had let me know that they weren’t going to be there, either through Holidays or Covid so I felt that five tables was a good number for this holiday time of year.

Well done to Mike and Paula for coming top north-south and to Tim and Bob for coming second north-south. Well done also to Gill and June, back to their winning streak, and coming top East-West. Well done to Bacha and Julia for coming second east-west. There were some quite challenging hands during the evening.

Thank you very much to Keith for directing and dealing the boards for us.

We look forward to seeing you all next week when Paul will be directing.

On the social bridge front, the Strawberry bridge at Long Crendon took place yesterday and was again hugely successful. Everyone enjoyed a really pleasant afternoons Bridge with a sumptuous strawberry tea. I will let you know how much money was raised for Mencap Oxfordshire holidays scheme when I know the figure.

Owing to the extreme weather that we are expecting Monday and Tuesday next week, it has been decided to cancel the Thame Bridge Club meeting on Monday evening, the 18th of July.

We will look forward to seeing everybody the following week, on the 25th of July.

Please watch the website for up-to-date announcements.

We had six tables in play last night at the club. We played 24 boards, some very challenging to bid and play, and there was a good ‘buzzy’ atmosphere.

Congratulations to Christine and Wal who were top North South and to Michelle and Andrew who were top East West. Well played to Paul and Tim who were second North South and George and Linda who were second East west.

Thank you to Paul Morris for Directing last night.

Christine told me that she had enjoyed the opportunity just to play!

We were pleased to welcome June G last night who has recently moved to Thame.

Next week, the 4th of April, we have a teams session directed by Jonathan Lillycrop of the EBU. I know that most of you have got yourselves organised with team mates and I think at least two more teams are joining us. We really do need people to step forward to offer to direct sometimes.

Next Monday, Jonathan Lillycrop has offered to come along early to give a demonstration of bridgemates scoring for those who might be interested. Please let us know if you are interested in this.

Thame Bridge Club is planning to reopen on March 7th, 2022. There will be weekly sessions on Mondays, 7.30 to 10.30. Our new venue will be Chinnor and Thame Rugby club which is on the Ring Road in Thame (Kingsey Road, OX9 3JL). It is a large room where we can space the tables safely and there is good parking. We realise this will depend on the situation with the Covid pandemic at that time but if we are able to go ahead we will follow all the rules and make the experience as safe as possible.
As we have not been open since March 2020 we imagine that there will be new people who have moved into the area who may like to join us on a Monday evening at the Bridge Club. We would invite you to come along and enjoy the first evening free of charge and get to meet the members. Please let us know if you are planning to come along. Thame Bridge Club email address is [email protected]. My email address is at the end of this information.

Please watch our Thame Bridge Club website (bridgewebs.com/thame/ ) for updates to this information.

If 2022 is the year that you have thought to learn to play Bridge please get in touch as there are classes locally that you can join.

If you know children who would like to learn to play bridge (maybe as a new skill for DofE award) or just for pleasure then I have details of opportunities.

Further information can be obtained from Barbara Jordan, on [email protected]
