CONGRATULATIONS TO ABSEVERN ROWERS Charlie Juckes and Rupert Clifford, who competed in the open J 14 event at the British Rowing Club Championships, at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham at the weekend. The boys came first in the time trial, among 32 crews, putting them into one of the two six-lane semi finals, which they also won. When it came to the final, they lay third from the start, but produced a truly amazing push in the last 250 metres. With just a 100 metres to go, they took the lead over the Burton Leander crew and held on magnificently to the finish.

Our J13 girls quad also deserves a mention, two of which have only been rowing for three months. There being no event at J13, they raced in the J14 event to get into a minor final. That unfortunately was cancelled because of thunderstorms. Their names are Annabelle Juckes, Molly Goodwin , Zoe Lewis, Daisy Ridsdale and they were competently coxed by yet another Juckes, eight year old Emily. Well done all.

AB SEVERN GIRLS ROW FOR GB IN THEIR FIRST INTERNATIONAL
Great Britain vs France is an annual matchup between the best Junior 16 crews from the two respective countries. After a difficult trial filled with tough domestic competition, Grace Janes and Phoebe Asquith were lucky enough to come out top and become the Women's J12 double scull crew to be selected to represent their country; the first AB Severn athletes to ever represent GB.

Grace and Phoebe joined the team of nearly 60 rowers and their coaches, to cross the pond for the beautiful leisure park of Léry-Poses in Normandy, where they would come up against a strong French squad. Though the quality of the opposition was unknown, the girls remained unfazed and they put in a truly excellent performance. They came home first and were absolutely thrilled to be awarded their first ever international medal!

Overall, GB came out on top in 10 events at the 2024 GB v France match! 🇬🇧 🇫🇷
The youngest GB Rowing Team pathway squad won four women’s races and six men’s races. Well done to all athletes and coaches 👏

ABSEVERN IN THE SQUAD, AS BRITISH ROWING ANNOUNCES 📣 GB v France J16 Match Team 📣
56 athletes from 15 rowing programs have been selected to represent GB for the GB v France J16 Match on Saturday, 13 July 🇬🇧 The 2024 GB v France Match will take place in France at Léry-Poses, near Rouen.

The match is a thrilling head-to-head contest over 1500m, offering young rowers and their coaches an opportunity to engage in international competition. With three trophies up for grabs, Men’s, Women’s and Overall, every performance counts in this team competition.

Tim Liversage, GB Rowing Team J16 Team Manager said, “After some fantastic racing at the trials in Nottingham, we are very excited to see what this team can do. We have great representation from large rowing clubs and schools, but also from smaller programmes like Shanklin Sandown and Hexham, who produced some outstanding races. Best of luck to all the crews racing and I hope they relish the opportunity to represent GB in France!”

The GB v France J16 Match represents the first step on the British Rowing Olympic Performance Pathway, potentially paving the way for future Olympic champions within the team.

ABSEVERN YOUNG ROWERS QUALIFY TO REPRESENT GREAT BRITAIN
Two weeks ago, our Women's Junior 16 Double Scull, consisting of Grace Janes and Phoebe Asquith, competed for a place in the Great Britain J16 squad at Nottingham. With a chance to race against the French in Normandy on the 13th July, our girls knew it would be a challenge.

The initial time trial was intense, but the girls found out that they were heading into the A-final. Just 3 seconds separated AB Severn's Grace Janes and Phoebe Asquith from an excellent double from Calpe Rowing Club, in Gibraltar. The Calpe rowers had the advantage and Grace and Phoebe understood it would be a fight to the finish.

A gripping final ensued with AB and Calpe quickly moving away from the rest pack and heading into the final 500 metres neck-and-neck. There followed a nail-biting sprint for the finish with both doubles giving it their all. It was such a tight race that neither crew knew who had crossed the line in the coveted first position.

“When we finally saw the results, it all became real. In that moment, we found out that we had done it. We were going to France and all those hard sessions and difficult times became truly worth it,“ said the delighted stroke of the boat, Grace Janes.

For AB Severn's head coach, Brian Curtis, it was equally thrilling, as this is the first time Club athletes have qualified for international competition.

"I am sure all will join with me in congratulating Grace and Phoebe A. on winning the trial at Nottingham. It is tremendously exciting that they will be going on to represent Great Britain in the annual England/France match in Normandy on Saturday 13th July."

ABSEVERN ATHLETES PUT IN FABULOUS PERFORMANCE AT HENLEY WOMEN'S REGATTA
The Henley Women's Regatta stands as a testament to the skill and dedication of female rowers, showcasing intense competition and the spirit of sportsmanship. AB Severn led a junior 16 composite crew; a recently formed blend of club athletes from AB Severn, Stratford upon Avon, and City of Bristol, created especially for the occasion. Over the Henley weekend, Grace Janes (AB), Phoebe Asquith (AB), Alexandra Francis (SuABC), and Daisy O’Reilly (CBR), quickly, emerged as a force to be reckoned with. Despite the brevity of their union, they rowed in perfect harmony, displayed remarkable synergy and tenacity, securing a place in the finals of the quadruple sculls. Their journey through the regatta, from strong time trials to the nail-biting final, highlights the crew's potential and sets a promising stage for their individual pursuits at the GB v France trials. Commenting Colin Bell, Stratford’s J16 Coach said, “Their achievement, within such a brief period of collaboration, is indeed a remarkable feat in the world of competitive rowing!”

AB SEVERN WINS MOST SUCCESSFUL CLUB AWARD AT STRATFORD REGATTA
Our AB athletes recently attended Stratford-upon-Avon Regatta, where everyone put in amazing performances. They all did so well in fact, that the Victor Ludorum Cup, (for the most successful club), was presented to us as a reward for winning 10/12 of our events!
Success started early in the day with our Open Junior 13 quad coming in first. They performed as a true team, despite rowing together competitively for the first time. Other great performances came in the form of our Open J16 single and Open J15 2. They fought hard against some established crews, gaining useful experience for their next race.
For many of our athletes, Stratford became the place to race in many new events, with one of our Women's Junior 15s comfortably winning her first ever single event and later racing against an incredibly competitive crew, to win the final of the Women's Junior 15 quad. Another recently created crew was the Open Junior 14 double. These two rowers executed some excellent steering to victory, despite the well renown bend on the course.
Winners:
Op J13 4x+🥇
Op J13 2x 🥇
W J13 2x🥇
W J 13 1x🥇
Op J14 2x🥇
W J15 4x+🥇
W J15 2x🥇
W J15 1x 🥇
W J16 2x 🥇
W J16 1x 🥇
It is an understatement to say we are incredibly proud of all our athletes who raced, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve at the next event!

Bridgnorth Regatta
Bridgnorth Regatta marked the second club outing of the season, with many AB Severn athletes bringing home some well-deserved pots. The crews were split over 4 divisions: singles, doubles, quads and even a four took to the 500m stretch for a full day of racing.
Starting off bright and early, our Open Junior 14 quad and Women's J14 single took to the water. Battling against some dominant crews, they gave it their all, gaining some rivals for the upcoming season. Alongside them, one of our athletes competed in both the challenging Open J16 and Women’s single reaching the final of both events despite being up against some determined competitors. However, AB’s winning streak was sparked by the WJ15 quad as they comfortably crossed the line.
Though a long day, the success of AB continued when our resident WJ16 2x raced up in the women’s event bringing home the win. With over 16 crews racing it is difficult to do them all justice for their brilliant efforts, but I believe it is only fair to share the following feats: our W J12 who raced her first ever single in the open; the Women’s sweep four who reached the final after just two outings and the Op J 16 and W J18 doubles who held their own against some strong opposition, representing the AB way perfectly!
Winners
Div 1 – WJ15 4x-
Div 2 – WJ18 1x
Div 3 – Op J15 4x-
Div 4 – W 2x and WJ15 2x
Div 5 – WJ13 1x and Op J14 2x

After such a brilliant day, it is an understatement to say that all athletes are raring to go to compete at Stratford this coming weekend!

ABSEVERN'S WOMEN'S JUNIOR 16 DOUBLE TAKE GOLD AGAIN....
Grace Janes and Phoebe Asquith were back at Dorney Lake this weekend competing at the National Schools Regatta for the coveted Simon Sears Cup (WJ16 double). Three weeks ago the girls won in the same category at the Junior Sculling regatta, but this time they faced even tougher competition. Grace Janes reports.

‘We knew after the Junior Sculling Regatta we could do it, but the field looked even stronger and the pressure was on. The time trial race resulted in us placing 2nd, with an 8 second difference between us and an excellent crew from Sir William Perkins School in Chertsey. With such a large gap, both Phoebe and I realised we had to pull something out the bag to get anywhere close to them.'

'Watching the conditions pick up and the wind get stronger, it is no exaggeration to say we became more nervous as the final crept nearer. As we reached the start line, I knew that this final would become a race of packed smaller groups - but I wasn’t expecting how quickly this would happen. Our boat and the crew from Sir William Perkins managed to break away from the rest of the race very early on, making it an agonising side by side battle. The Sir William Perkins crew had established clear water between us and them and we were heading into the final 1000 metres. It was intense. At that moment it felt as if everything was in slow motion, but Phoebe and I had faith in each other and we started our push for home.'

'Going back over those last few metres in my head, I can only remember the point when both boats crossed the line, and I could hear Phoebe celebrating behind me. The idea that we could have won back almost two lengths seemed impossible, leaving me anxiously waiting for the announcement of the final standings. However, when we heard AB Severn called to the podium and we were confirmed as National School gold medallists a rush of emotion came over me. We had done it.’

A GOOD DAY'S RACING FOR THE CLUB AT WORCESTER
Our full squad of AB Severn athletes attended Worcester Regatta last week, immersing themselves in the first club event of the season, and the first race for many new rowers. Eleven athletes spent the whole day competing over the 800m course, and came away with 5 pots in total!

The new Women's Junior 15 quad kicked us off, winning their semi final, but narrowly missing out on their first pot. The club's influx of new racers willingly took up the challenge, with the OpenJunior 14 double holding their heads high as they crossed the line. It was a difficult first race in which they showed the true definition of sportsmanship. The more experienced athletes of AB Severn dominated in the WJ14, 15 and 16 singles events, even when faced with some tough opposition!

After an interval of cricket and ice cream, the afternoon followed a similar pattern, with the girls’ doubles having a go on the infamous Worcester stretch. Our WJ16 double once again held their own and came away with a solid win, setting a good example for the WJ15 and 14 pairings. The latter crew was composed of two excellent rowers, who found themselves racing up a year, but despite this, they still stormed through the competition coming away with their first ever pot together. A well-deserved result to end the day!
