The fourth hole at Scotscraig, Westward Ho, is the most architecturally significant on the course, with an influence that extends across the Atlantic, serving as the inspiration for the Knoll template hole popularised by C.B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor in America.
James Braid positioned the green atop a small hill — a knoll — on this dogleg par-4. The fairway carries large bunkers to the left, with heathery terrain to the right, requiring precise approach play to a plateau green.
The Knoll concept, and its more extreme variant the Volcano — found throughout Donald Ross’s American designs — trace their origins to Braid’s work at Scotscraig.
Just another way in which a round at Scotscraig offers a walk through the history of the game.
