One in a Million
I had a conversation today with someone planning something very exciting with their working dog. A one in a million dog. The kind that comes along rarely, if at all, and changes what feels possible.
We found ourselves talking about that feeling.
The moment when you realise that this isn’t ordinary. That this partnership, this opportunity, may not come again in quite the same way.
And it took me straight back, to my own one in a million horse …
Together, we flew. Across disciplines, across expectations, into places I had never quite imagined for myself. We found ourselves in the red ribbons, in amazing moments, in experiences that felt bigger than anything I had ever planned.
And the truth is, I may not have been ready.
But I did it.
Because he carried me there.
With his kindness.
With his honesty.
With a generosity that allowed me to grow alongside him rather than feeling I had to be perfect before I began.
That is what those horses do.
They don’t wait for us to be ready.
They help us become ready.
And now, I find myself blessed to be here again, this time alongside a very special pony. A true one in a million in his own right. Brave, brilliant, powerful, and wonderfully turbo powered when the moment asks for it.
For some time now, he has been a catalyst and an enabler. Not just for me, but for the younger ponies around him. He has quietly taken on the role of teacher, guiding a younger pony alongside him, offering wisdom, confidence, and understanding without ever needing to be asked.
Now a bright energy is beginning to appear in the younger pony. The power and natural forward lift is growing. The brilliance is beginning to show.
And you can feel him learning to organise it. Not rushed. Not forced. Just quietly developing with balance and purpose, supported by the pony beside him who has shown him how to believe in the job.
That is the magic of a pony like my little hero, my one in a million.
He doesn’t just do the job.
He helps others grow into theirs.
Horses like this do not come along often.
They are not replaceable.
They are not interchangeable.
They are once in a lifetime.
And I think, sometimes, we as humans hesitate.
We wait until we feel ready.
Until everything is perfectly in place.
Until we believe we are good enough to match what is in front or underneath us.
But perhaps the truth is this.
When a horse or pony like that comes into your life, the most important thing you can do is say yes.
Step forward.
Take the opportunity.
Allow yourself to be carried, supported, and developed in ways you could not create alone.
Because one day, you will look back and realise it was never about being perfectly prepared.
It was about being present.
And being willing to go with them.
These horses, these animals, these extraordinary partners, they shape us.
They teach us.
They carry us further than we might go on our own.
And they deserve to be recognised for exactly what they are.
Not just talented.
Not just successful.
But deeply, quietly, life-changing.
So if you are lucky enough to have one with you now…
Don’t wait.
Trust them and go with them.
And thank them, every single day, for being exactly who they are.
