I do think a Minister dedicated to Water Safety is a good idea.
I've volunteered in the water safety sector for over 15 years. sadly back in 2011 my son lost his life while swimming in open water.
Since my son's death I've educated around 550,000 people of all ages, colours, nationalities, religions, regardless of age s*x or anything else for that matter drowning does not discriminate.
I've implemented changes at both local levels and national levels.
I've changed the national curriculum so it now includes teaching water safety there.
I've spoken in schools, colleges, universities , fire services, police cadets, brownies, guides, beavers, cubs, princes trust this just names a few of the places I've spoken at.
I've done numerous public speaking events where I've addressed 500+ I even met prince William to work on the "safer thames"
I've risk assed areas, Then councils, MP's, water companies and environmental agencies have taken action and listened to and acted upon recommendations that I made. Then implemented changes such as putting lighting in, putting water safety signs in place, water safety equipment etc.
I've supported hundreds of families on their journeys. Some I may have spoken to a handful of times, some are friends for life and some just wanted supporting though the inquest and such like. I've attended a fair few inquests now and they don't get any easier. Some families wanted tips and help or on setting up campaigns like mine in their areas.
I've volunteered for numerous fire services across the country. when I say I've not stopped for 15+years I say it 100%and from my broken heart.
I received water safety educator of the year award for 26/27.
My son Dylan's story is a case study in the national curriculum content.
I've received numerous awards over the years when really all I've ever wanted to see was a reduction in drownings.
I'm asking for there to be a minister in place to oversee all things water related because as it stands drownings/water related issues fall under so many people.... environmental agency, parks and recreational and a whole host more ... so as you can imagine very little gets done other than book passing.
my mp can't help as he's the house speaker so I've never ever had any government help/backing which is why I am relying on YOU!
WE'VE GOT 100,000 SIGNATURES BEFORE CAN WE DO IT AGAIN?
Yet again I'm told this is what the water safety sector wants. you would think we would have thousands of signatures but no here we go again fighting hard for every single signature. To those who've signed thank you to those who haven't please consider doing so. You would think all the water safety charities would be pushing this, you would think water companies would be pushing for this, emergency services, local councils, the leisure industry, teachers, search and rescue, the press..... I thought we had all had enough of seeing these tragedies?
