Learning a new skill isn't a straightforward process. Our bodies need repetition to build muscle memory and we often have to unlearn habits before we build new correct ones.
For many of our swimmers to achieve their next swim stage, they will need skills to be broken down into smaller chunks of learning.

At New Wave we feel it is important to reward the smaller milestones and have found a scheme of badges that do so. We hope you will agree that the bright colours on the Watch Me scheme are very child friendly.

Swimming should be enjoyable and inclusive no matter what a child's learning ability or style is.

We look forward to awarding the Watch Me badges alongside our STA scheme later this term. šŸŠšŸŠā€ā™€ļøšŸŠšŸŠā€ā™€ļø

During swim lessons you will hear me talk about peer pressure. Peer pressure can be positive. We learn skills from others. In lessons I will place more adventurous children with nervous ones so that the adventurous child can demonstrate a skill that the other swimmers are yet to try. They may place their face in the water and come up again with a smile on their face. And soon afterwards I will start to see the other children giving it a try.

But then we come to the negative side of peer pressure. When your friends all want to cool off in a lake and you are the only one who appears to understand the dangers of this decision.
Let's talk to our youngsters about the importance of saying no. For being responsible for their own decisions and therefore their own life. Real friends will respect the word no.
I remember my father saying to me it's better to be laughed at for saying no then to go along with the crowd and lose your life.

Have the conversation and impart that wisdom. šŸŠā€ā™€ļøšŸŠšŸŠā€ā™€ļøšŸŠ

During the May heatwave it has been reported that 16 young lives were lost in water-related incidents.

With the hot weather expected to continue over summer months I urge parents and carers to talk to young people about the dangers of inland waterways.

Even when the air temperature feels very warm, open water can remain dangerously cold. Cold water shock can affect anyone within seconds, causing breathing difficulties, panic and loss of muscle control - even for strong swimmers.

As responsible parents and guardians we take our children to swimming lessons so they can learn to swim. But these lessons take place in warm pool water with teachers and lifeguards close by. Please help your child to understand that having a friend with you when entering outdoor water is not a safety plan.

Drowning Prevention Week is taking place 13th - 20th June and I will share all information I come across to help educate our youngsters.

As a community that's surrounded by bodies of water we need to come together to prevent further lives being lost. šŸŠšŸŠā€ā™€ļø

Introducing our new evening teacher:

Hi everyone, I’m Chloe and I have been a swim teacher for 4 years now.

I completed my swim teaching qualification whilst living in Cyprus and fell in love with teaching instantly. I always find it so rewarding watching a child find their confidence in the water.

I look forward to meeting everyone and helping your little ones find their confidence in the water and in me. šŸŠšŸŠā€ā™€ļøšŸŠ
