We just wanted to share a some sad news from our Chair, Oz-Lloyd Phillips.

"We regret to announce the passing of Richard Hodgkiss yesterday.

Richard was a prominent marshal across all disciplines in the North West and received the region’s Bellini Trophy earlier this year as NW Region Marshal Of The Year. Although Richard took a step back from marshalling this season due to ill health, it had been arranged for him to attend August’s Historic Gold Cup where he would have also been awarded the Barrie Williams Trophy for BMMC National Marshal Of The Year. This award will now be presented in his honour.

Our thoughts are with Richard’s family and friends during this time.

The club are in contact with Richard’s family and details of any future service will be published once known."

If you are affected by this news please do reach out to your marshalling family, we're all here to support each other. There is also professional support if you need it through the BMMC so please reach out if you need to talk.

🧡 Could you inspire the next generation of women in motorsport? 🧡

We're looking for 2–3 enthusiastic female marshals to join the FIA Girls on Track panel at the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship on Friday 14 August.

This is a fantastic opportunity to share your own marshalling journey and help inspire young women to explore the many opportunities motorsport has to offer.

One of the key messages we'd like to share is that marshalling can be the start of an incredible motorsport journey. As a marshal you'll gain experience, build confidence, develop new skills and make valuable connections that can open doors to a wide range of roles across the sport.

If you're passionate about marshalling and would enjoy talking to the next generation about your experiences, we'd love to hear from you.

🎥 Could you help inspire the next generation of motorsport volunteers?

Motorsport UK is looking for 15–30 second selfie videos from people involved in our sport, and we’d love to see plenty of marshals from our region taking part.

Simply answer this question:

“What would you say to someone who loves motorsport but doesn’t realise they can get involved themselves?”

You could talk about:
🏁 How you got started
🏁 Why marshalling is more accessible than people think
🏁 A myth you’d like to bust
🏁 The advice you’d give to someone thinking about volunteering

Don’t worry about making it perfect—just speak naturally, as if you’re talking to a friend.

📱 Film vertically (portrait)
⏱️ 15–30 seconds
📅 Submit by 8 July (details are on the image below)

Every marshal has a different story, and yours could be the one that encourages someone to take that first step into our sport.

Let’s show just how welcoming and rewarding marshalling can be. 🧡🏁

This is well worth 10 minutes of your time.

With the British Grand Prix taking place this weekend, it’s a timely reminder of the professionalism, teamwork and calm decision-making that happens behind the scenes whenever an incident occurs.

Gareth gives a fascinating insight into what it’s really like to respond as part of a marshal team at a major Formula One incident.

A huge thank you to Kym Illman, Scott Helme and Gareth for bringing this story together.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens beyond the television cameras, we’d highly recommend giving it a watch. 🏁
