A strong performance from our Green Army Ladies saw us seal progression through to the Second Qualifying Round of the Womenโs FA Cup following a 4-1 victory over Lane Head Ladies.
It was a quick start for Coton who were immediately out of the blocks and on the front foot, pressing the visitors back line with intensity. The early pressure proved to be decisive as Coton took the lead in the 4th minute. A Stacie Marie corner was floated to the back post allowing Lois Brindley to power her header into the side netting to make it 1-0. With momentum firmly in Cotonโs favour, they were able to capitalise on another excellent passage of play to double the lead. Ellie Moores played an incisive ball through the visitors defence allowing Lexi Gunn to run through and direct an excellent finish into the far corner to leave the โkeeper helpless.
Coton continued on the front foot throughout the half, restricting Lane Head to a series of long balls which were dealt with effectively. With the half drawing to an end, the Green Army were able to add a third goal to their tally to take a convincing lead into the break. Neli Severinโs drive forward saw her knock a ball through the visitors defence before running onto it herself, allowing her time and space in front of goal to poke the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 3-0.

With nothing to lose, Lane Head came out fighting after the restart piling pressure on Coton and pushing players forward. An early effort saw Jess Jenkinson called into action with a great save, before Sophie Noakes threw her body in front of the ball to stop a certain goal. However in the 48th minute the long ball tactic came into fruition when Lane Head managed to get through on goal and pull a goal back.
Another positive reaction by Coton produced a number of breaks forward, and in the 64th minute the three goal advantage was restored when Mia Brown played through Neli Severin who showed great determination to beat the โkeeper to the ball and finish into an empty net. The action wasnโt over when in the 72nd minute the Green Army were reduced to ten following a straight red card when the Lane Head forward was brought down when through on goal. Coton showed fantastic team spirit and effort levels though to manage the game through and secure the win - and progression through to the Second Qualifying Round for the first time.
