Last Tuesday we said a massive well done to Brody who is our May Student of the Month! 🥳

Brody is one of our newest and youngest members but he doesn't let that stop him from training regularly, trying hard and making huge progress! His confidence and karate have both grown so much over the last few months and Brody does well to take on new challenges, even going to the recent HDKI Plymouth and Cornwall Gasshuku, training with new instructors, new people and learning lots too!

Well done Brody on your well deserved award! 🥳

Seven years ago today, Becky Sensei competed at the HDKI GB Female Championships alongside team mates from Plymouth Karate-Do!

As well as winning bronze in team kata, Becky was also grand champion that day, winning gold in her Kata and Kumite categories! 💪💥

HDKI prides itself on creating opportunities and its fantastic that the HDKI - GB Novice women’s competition is back this year!

Last Friday we had our monthly competition training session at Evolution Martial Arts. 👊

We were a bit quieter this time with exam season well under way but everyone who made it pushed themselves and developed some sharp new skills.

After working on and reviewing our tokui kata, we moved into some challenging kumite drills, attacking from the front with our hands and feet, building combinations and making sure we weren't sticking around to get hit afterwards! There were some brilliant front leg mawashi geris coming out as well as creating our own combinations which we tried on a variety of opponents, putting our range and control to the test too!

We also picked up our yummy doughnuts 🍩 which as well as being a well deserved treat at training on Saturday also helped Mary Dean's PTFA in their tasty fundraiser, bringing over £100 in to Mary Dean’s Primary School! 🥳

Our next Competition Training is on Friday 3rd July, see you there! 💪💥

A huge thank you and well done to everyone who came along, trained or contributed to the recent HDKI Plymouth and Cornwall Gasshuku! As well as being a great opportunity to train together and make friends within our wider community, we also raised nearly £370 for Team Darcy! 🥳

This fantastic group of colleagues are walking 100km across the Sahara to raise money for PAPYRUS, an organisation working to prevent su***de in young people by supporting them during mental health crisis.

Special Training with Matt Powell Sensei

This fantastic training opportunity is now just 10 days away!! 🥳

Matt Sensei has very kindly waived his fee for this event and has instead asked that a donation is made to a worthy cause, in Shaun's memory.

You may remember that Shaun, my step dad and an invaluable part of my karate journey and that of many others, sadly and unexpectedly, passed away in October. This was a loss that has been felt deeply here and across the karate community. Funds raised at this event will be donated to British Heart Foundation in Shaun's memory. Osu!

Please join me in saying a massive well done to our APRIL (yes I know! 😬) Student of the Month, Araya! 🥳

In April, Araya successfully graded to brown belt, she trained hard across all 3 Plymouth based HDKI dojo, most weeks training at Plymouth Karate-Do on Mondays, Toshi-Ryu Karate Club on Wednesdays AND with us at Tamerton Karate Club on Saturdays, as well as attending the monthly Competition Training!

She also stepped up to compete at the HDKI GB Southern Region Karate Championships, winning a hard fought gold 🥇 in kumite, placing in team kata and moving to a tough new kata category!

On top of this, Araya regularly helps out with our under 8s class and is always on hand to work with our junior grades, providing extra support, as needed. Her commitment to training has seen well deserved progress and success and her willingness to encourage and support her club mates make her a very worthy winner of the student of the month award! Osu! 💪💥

We had blocks and spins on the bill last night!

The first session looked at block preparation, using both hands for cover and making the block more effective before taking that in to our kata.

In the second session, we worked on using our inner thigh muscles, squeezing and driving in our stances in kata before adding in full rotation for grading kihon (ushiro geri and gyaku zuki).

We also had the first open brown and black belt session to allow our senior grades to stay after training to work on their own goals! Well done to Emily and Lou who both used that extra time and space very well last night! 💪

Great work again on Saturday, before the summer ended! 😂

Our under 8s worked on kihon before a tricky circuit, testing coordination and techniques!

We challenged our kicks in the next two classes, working on good preparation, reaching the target and recovering our leg. Of course there was time for some kata and grading kumite too!

Just 3 weeks to go until our Special Training with Matt Powell Sensei!

As well as being a long term friend of many Plymouth based karate-ka, Matt Sensei is a super experienced karate-ka and instructor! He will be delivering 3 varied classes for us, offering something for all ages and all grades so this is a brilliant training opportunity, for everyone to get involved with! 💪
