It's often not WHAT you say but HOW you say it:

In the main course, I put a lot of focus on non verbal communication, I don't cover that here but two top tips, be positive/enthusiastic and try and get some rapport with the person interviewing you, they are looking for a work colleague so fitting in and showing some desire to be there will go a long long way!

WHAT ABOUT QUESTIONS I JUST CAN'T ANSWER?

You don’t need an answer for everything. It’s okay to say, ‘I actually haven’t experienced that yet so I can’t think of a good example to give you.” For example, if you are interviewing for an account management job and you are asked about a time you have had to deal with confrontation from an unhappy customer. What if you’ve never worked somewhere customer facing before? You can’t make it up. You CAN be honest and say, “I’ve never been in a customer facing role before so I can’t give a solid example”. You can then go onto say “however, I can give examples where I have dealt with conflict in other areas of my life if you like? I think it’s a strength of mine and that one of the reasons I think I will do well in this job”.

HOW TO REHEARSE ANSWERING QUESTIONS IN PREPARATION FOR AN INTERVIEW

You are going to use your smart phone or similar device to practice using stories to answer the types of question you think are most likely to come up. You can use a generic list of questions combined with the types of question you think are most likely to come up for the job you are interviewing for. Video yourself answering one question. Play it back. Pay attention to whether you are rambling on too much, your body language, appearance and make sure you are actually relating the answer to the question. Then repeat the process. You should do this so often that it’s second nature. Once you have polished this to the point you are happy, share with a trusted friend/family member and seek notes and direction.

You can also do this with one of our Coaches by booking a one hour video session - https://www.keymakercoaching.com/offers/6GvU82oU/checkout something I would highly recommend.

Bear in mind, this should never come across as ‘scripted’ or un-natural and you must always morph the story so that it answers the question. As you go though this process, there will be questions that you don’t have a story for, if this happens, go back to the beginning and find one - ensuring you never slip into the area of ‘making things up’.

What the interviewer really wants to discover:

The interviewer is trying to work out if you are likely to still be in the role in a year or two. If you are REALLY good, or VERY ambitious, they may actually not hire you because they think you may not stick around, which is actually very logical though may seem counter intuitive to you, surely you want to come across as being very talented and very ambitious!? Yes, you do but when these sort of questions come up, you can really settle the nerves of the interviewer by reassuring them that you will go to distance.

Variations

Why are you leaving your role?

Where will you be in 5 years?

Why do you want to work here?

What do you least like about your current/previous job?

What are you looking for in a new position?

What is your ultimate goal?

Top Tip 2: How to answer; what are your weaknesses?

The second approach is to try and dodge the question entirely.

There are two techniques here: The first is to present a weakness that is actually another strength:

For example; ‘I really like to win and can be too competitive at times’. Or, ‘I can get so focussed on my job that my social life suffers’

These are pretty transparent to an experienced recruiter but it will work with a less experienced interviewer.

The second technique is to present a weakness that is totally irrelevant to the job.

For example, let us say you are interviewing for a role in face to face sales or account management. You could say that your weakness is that ‘I’m a people person so I don't thrive working alone for long periods on tasks like coding or data analysis’. This is quite clever, you’ve give a very honest answer but it’s totally irrelevant to the job and wont be used as a reason not to hire you.

By and large, if the job fits you, there shouldn’t really be many relative weaknesses anyway.

Nobody likes talking about their weaknesses and you do have to walk a line. If you are too open, it may be used against you as a reason not to hire you, but if you fail to acknowledge any weakness, it demonstrates a lack of self awareness and can also result in you getting rejected so I’m going to give you some ideas on how to handle these questions.

There are two ways to approach this. The first is to just be totally open, this is absolutely my preferred approach. If I’m interviewing and someone tells me their REAL relative weaknesses, I just get right behind them. Nothing beats authenticity and self awareness. If those weaknesses mean that they are likely to fail in the job, then clearly they are in the wrong place and I can help that job seeker to steer themselves in a different direction, this is the entire point of the interview.

If you are taking this track, remember, you don’t have a ‘weakness’ you simply have certain things that you will have to work harder to overcome. Try using language like

“I have to put more focus on X”

“Because X is something that doesn’t come as naturally to me as Y, I worked hard to learn to be better at X and if anything I over compensate”.

“If I thought that it was going to hold me back from being successful in this job I wouldn’t be here.”

Remember, a relative weakness is simply something that has to be met and overcome.

"Tell me about yourself"is one of five main questions that you will get asked variations of in interview. Whatever job you are applying for, this is relevant so pay attention!!

Why do employers want to know the answer to this question?
They want to find out about YOU... the person you are, what makes you tick, what are you like to work with?

One important thing NOT to do... Do Not talk through your CV! The person interviewing you will already have read your CV and they may ask you questions to elaborate on it later on in the interview. This bit is about what you are really like as a person.

It is quite difficult to answer this question if you don't know yourself well enough, and it might surprise you to know that lots of people don't really know themselves... In Step One of Key Makers online course, we use exercises to help you go deep into who you are, which in turn helps you choose the right job to apply for. AND it also helps answer this question, "Tell me about yourself."
