DYLAN Necrews is another athlete who can take great satisfaction from his performance at the South West Schools Championships.
While the 15-year-old (pictured) might not have won a medal or set a record he did smash his personal best by four seconds in the inter boys 1500m. And that is plenty of reason to celebrate!
Representing Gloucestershire Dylan, who is coached by Debbie Gunning and Jon Hughes, clocked 4mins 16.12secs to finish sixth and move into the top 10 of the South West U16 Rankings.
It is the the third time he has bettered his PB this season. Last year Dylan boasted a PB of 4:33.96 and has has now improved that to 4:28.68 in April, then 4:20.1 last month and now sub 4:20.
That’s great progress and hopefully there is more yet to come from the teenager.
Also at the weekend Josh Steward finished seventh in the senior boys 1500m (4:15.18).

ELLIOT Cox has spoken of his pride at breaking Toby Ulm’s South West Schools Championship record at the Exeter Arena on Saturday.
The 16-year-old won the inter boys 400m hurdles in a personal best time of 53.40secs to clip 0.7secs of Toby’s record set in 2005.
And to remind younger members of just how good a hurdler Toby was, he went on to win the English Schools’ title that same year and was runner-up in the National Championships.
Subsequently in 2007 he became UK U20 champion clocking 51.6secs and then added bronze at the European U20 Championships in 50.99secs.
In short, he was some athlete and remarkably both he and Elliot were coached by our chairman Howard Moscrop!
“I knew I was capable of running a good time but 53.40secs far exceeded my expectations,” said Elliot.
“To break the record held by Toby for so long felt amazing.
“A lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes in what is a physically and technically demanding event.
“I’m lucky to be part of a training group who support me and push me in every training session, as well as having Howard (Moscrop) as a coach.”
The time puts Elliot second in the UK U18 Rankings in his first year in the age group.
He will now head to the UK U18 Championships, in Cardiff, next weekend, where the top athlete will be hoping to win a place in the GB team for the European U18 Championships.
“Elliot’s achievements this year are very much on a par with Toby and considering he only moved to the 400m hurdles this winter from the sprint hurdles to knock five seconds off his best is outstanding,” said Howard.
“What he has done in the last month in particular has surprised me with PBs in the 100m, 200m, 400m and hurdles. Something is working well!
“The group trains very well together and spur each other on. Long may it continue.”

NEW UPDATED VERSION

OUR athletes are celebrating a fantastic tally of 21 medals at the South West Schools Track & Field Championships yesterday.

Representing both Wiltshire and Gloucestershire that haul comprised nine golds, seven silvers and five bronze medals at the Exeter Arena.

Of those nine golds pride of place should go arguably to Elliot Cox, who broke Toby Ulm’s championship record set 20 years ago. Elliot won in a sparkling PB time of 53.40secs.

The Belgrave family certainly had a great day with Laila-Jae winning the senior girls 100m hurdles and younger brother Lewis adding the inter boys 100m hurdles. What a super family double.

It was actually a great day for the club’s hurdlers with Elliot Cox winning the inter boys 400m hurdles and Arthur Widdows lifting the senior boys 400m hurdles for a total of four golds.

The pole vaulters were also up there with Esha Bhalerao and Lowri Prosser winning the inter and junior girls titles respectively.

Just seven days after breaking the oldest male record at the Wiltshire Schools Championships James Mayneord delivered another accomplished performance to add the regional 3000m title.

James dominated the inter boys race finishing over 13 seconds clear of his nearest rival.

Representing Gloucestershire Kalina Karacheva won the senior girls 400m in a big PB of 56.85secs, well inside her previous best of 57.74 set last year in terms of Bulgarian Championships. Her new 400m PB also means she qualifies for National Standards and is a new club record for her age group!

Last but certainly not least Jacob Pender won gold in the junior boys hammer.

Among the seven silver medals two came from Gloucestershire athletes, with Kalina adding a second medal and another PB of 1.66m in the high jump (and also qualifying for English Schools!) and Mistral Lyons in the pole vault.

Lottie Harding, Beth Humphrey, Jesse Bryant, Benjamin Trybala-Lugembe and Jacob Sutherland were the other silver medallists.

The fourth Wiltshire bronze medalists were Meredith Prosser, Holly Scott, Leo Kyson and Al Virgilio while for Gloucestershire Ella Spencer signed off her final appearance in this event with third place in the seniors 1500m.

Swindon Harriers Athletics Club has secured another sponsorship from a long-standing local electrical firm.

Following on the heels of the club’s recent first place in the first round of the National Athletics League, the club has agreed a two-year deal with Askwith Electrical.

This funding will go toward the refurbishment of the track surface. The track surface has reached end-of-life after being laid down in the 1980s and the club is fundraising toward its £300k target.

Howard Moscrop, club chairman, said: ‘We’d like to share a big thank you from the athletes and coaches for this generous financial support.”

The club is based at the County Ground Park off Ocotal Way, and has over 500 athletes.

Adam Askwith (pictured), owner of Askwith Electrical, said: “As both a track member & parent of a young athlete, I think it’s hugely important to support youth sports teams in our local community.

“Over recent years I’ve been able to see the positive training progression and confidence building impact the athletics club has had on my own children, so I’m proud to have the opportunity of track-side sponsorship. “I hope that it encourages others to support with the club’s fundraising efforts to maintain and improve facilities enabling training at the venue to continue for many years to come.

“It would be a huge loss to the town should it fall in to a state of disrepair like other sports facilities in the town have in recent years through lack of funding.

“Our business will also continue to lend it’s expertise with repairs and upgrades to the electrical facilities at the site, including the upcoming installation of a defibrillator unit for the wellbeing of all visitors and athletes.“As a platform for so many local children and athletes, some reaching the top end of national rankings, it’s a great organisation to grow the profile of the town and to enable so many of our local children and adults to achieve.”

TEENAGER James Mayneord produced a superb performance to break the oldest male record on the books at the Wiltshire Schools Track and Field Championships.

Mayneord’s time of 8mins 55.61secs to win the inter boys 3000m title at the County Ground track broke a 53-year-old record by almost three seconds.

That Ray’s record has stood so long is no surprise as the Salisbury runner went on to become a top class senior runner, representing England at the 1982 Commonwealth games in Brisbane, finishing eighth.

No wonder that 15-year-old James, who is coached by John Dill, was delighted with his achievement.

“I am definitely very happy with that, it is my best run of the summer so far,” said James.

“I was aware of the record and as it was only a bit quicker than my previous PB (8:58.24 set in April) I thought I would go for it.”

James will now represent Wiltshire at the South West Schools Championships, in Exeter, this weekend (Saturday June 20) when he will hope to cement his place in the county team for the English Championships next month.

Elliot Cox produced a superb run to win the senior boys’ 400m hurdles title at the 92nd annual Wiltshire Schools Track & Field Championships.
On his home track 16-year-old Elliot gave a demonstration of class hurdling as he won in 55.09secs, just 0.02secs off his personal best and club record set earlier this season.
Elliot, who is coached by our chairman Howard Moscrop, is currently sixth in the UK U18 Rankings.
Ben Janes ran a PB of 50.99secs to win the inter boys 400m, beating his previous best of 51.47secs set on the same track at the Wiltshire Championships for clubs.
There was a tremendous inter boys 800m with Finley Byrne dipping under two minutes to win in 1:59.73 with Charlie Billington smashing his PB in second and Alex Leak improving his PB to 2:00.89. Surely that first sub two minutes can’t be far away from Alex?
In a dominant solo run James Mayneord sliced almost three seconds off his PB to win the inters 3000m in 8:55.61 with Olly Hughes runner-up.
Lewis Belgrave ran a swift 14.19 to win the inters 100m hurdles and Jesse Bryant was just outside his PB with an impressive win in the 1500m steeplechase.
Jacob Pender won two medals with gold in the junior boys hammer, throwing a PB of 49.82m and silver in the shot.
Freya McMeeking and Elsie Scrase claimed a one-two in the inters 800m while Beth Humphrey shaved over two seconds off her PB to win the 1500m.
Pole vaulters Lowri Prosser and Esha Bhalerao were both winners and Tamiah Roswell won the junior 100m.
Well done also to Pippa Wall for breaking five minutes for the first time as she won the junior girls 1500m in 4:58.37.

THE good news keeps on coming for the club with the confirmation of another exciting sponsorship deal.

We can now reveal that established local wealth management firm Vantreo Wealth Management have signed a two-year sponsorship deal with Swindon Harriers.

Vantreo’s sponsorship will go toward the refurbishment of the athletics club’s track surface. The track surface has reached end-of-life after being laid down in the 1980s and the club is fundraising toward a £300k target.

Club chairman Howard Moscrop said: “We would like to extend our sincere thanks on behalf of the athletes and coaches for Vantreo’s generous sponsorship and the arrangement in place for ongoing financial support for our club through business placed with Vantreo by club members and their family members.”

As part of the firm’s commitment to the club and its future goals, Vantreo are offering for any new referrals or business introduced directly as a result of the sponsorship, a donation of 20 per cent of the net revenue back to the club.

Patrick Van Eady, Managing Director of Vantreo Wealth Management (pictured), said: “Over the last four years, my daughter has trained and competed at the club, giving our family a close connection to it.

“As a result, it felt only natural for me, both personally and as a local business owner, to support such an important facility within our community.

“Health and wealth are closely linked in many ways. We often say your greatest wealth is your health, and many of the same principles apply to both, discipline, consistency, patience, and allowing good decisions over time to deliver the results you are aiming for. There is a real synergy there.

“We hope this helps support the Harriers in reaching their goals even faster and gives something meaningful back to a fantastic club and community.”

Swindon Harriers recently celebrated its return to the National Athletics League with a fantastic win in the opening match.

The athletics club is based at the County Ground Park off Ocotal Way, and has over 500 members.

A thumping victory and some outstanding individual performances sum up the second match of the Wessex Young Athletes League match which we hosted on Sunday.
Windy conditions certainly didn’t help either the sprinters or middle distance runners but the club’s athletes certainly piled up the points across the three age groups - U18s, 16s and 14s - to finish 262 points clear of the field.
“I was really pleased with the result and it's nice to have a squad that can go out and put on a performance like that,” said co-manager Martin Smith, who looks after the U14s age group.
Picking out some of the U14s highlights Isla Van-Eady again narrowly missed breaking 12 seconds for the U14s 75m hurdles, winning with 12.12secs but into a headwind of -1.5mps. That sub 12-seconds is surely coming Isla!
Thea Dowling was runner-up in the 200m (28.67secs) and then linked up with Isla, Andrea Wanjiru and Tamiah Roswell, who won the 100m, for victory in the sprint relay.
Pippa Wall (5:01.34) and Bethany Brien (5:07.44) delivered maximum points in the 1500m.
“Sophie Woolford also cleared 1.30m in the high jump, a PB,” said Martin.
“There were steady points from our throws quartet as well.”
For the U14 boys Elliot Bray (32.70m) and Jasper Philpott (24.28) secured maximum points in the javelin.
In the high jump Jacob Valdery cleared 1.35m in his first competition and Raffery Reesby claimed a great PB to win the long jump with 4.86m.
Kian Maye cleared 4.23m to win the B long jump and helped add useful points in the 200m and relay. Sam Lyne won the B 80m hurdles in 16.50secs.
Corey Cox was back in the 1500m A race finishing runner-up (4:51.94) with Lewis Parker winning the B race (5:05.48).
Jack Saunders was trying a 1500m for the first time in a competition so went into the non-scoring race and won it in a fantastic time of 4:42.64 - eight seconds quicker than the winner of the A race!
For the U16s team manager Craig Scott was full of praise for the 4x100m relay squad of Lewis Belgrave Jayden Messiah, Jaliel Joseph and Ethan Bryon, who won a time of 47.16secs.
“The boys were only 0.16secs off the league record so we hope they break that soon,” said Craig.
Doug Kirby (2:05.57) and Dylan Necrews (2:06.36) did the double in the 800m as did Luka Shankland and Max Malcolm in the 300m.
Jayden (12.50) and Ethan (23.80) looked sharp in winning the B 100m and 200m races.
Thea Scobey won the U16s 300m A race in a PB of 43.80secs with Annabelle Kelly winning the B string (45.21).
Freya McMeeking, Sophie Collis, Olivia Porton and Amy Harris secured maximum points in the 800m and 1500m race respectively.
Focusing on the throws having just recovered from injury Ellie Charlesworth threw an excellent PB of 32.53m to win the javelin. Ellie also won the discus while Esha Bhalerao won the B javelin and B long jump.
